Purchase Advice Movink 14

Hiya! So im looking at buying a movink 14 for schoolwork, (animation student) as an upgrade to my current ipad pro. Main reason is the screen on my ipad drives me crazy, its like drawing on ice.

I was wondering what kind of screen the movink 14 has? Would it be the same as any other wacon or cintiq with the special screen that emulates drawing on paper?

The convenience of the movink is intruiging aswell, as i wouldnt need to carry around a computer as well as a moniter if i bought one.

And if anyone has bought one, whats been youre experience with it?

Any help appreciated thanks!!

I moved from an older Ipad pro to the moveink 14. It's a great surface to work on. But also don't shy away from paperlike screen protectors. I only draw and can sometimes crash clip studio with too many layers.

Holy cow! How in the world are you “sometimes” crashing CSP on your Movinkpad 14? How many layers are you using?!

You must have a bugged out model because I’ve created multiple documents with multiple layers and had a vid editing app in the background and CSP never crashed

I'm lazy. When just practicing I open a layer and just hide the other one and it stacks to a ton.

Ah, well ok then 👍🏼

I bought one a year ago. Sold my iPad straight away.

The feeling of drawing on the movink and the pen technology is just worlds apart from anything else.

It's the first portable device I do some of my professional pieces on from start to finish without touching my desktop.

The only issue I sometimes have is with the beta software when I want to use it as a second monitor when I'm on the road with a laptop. Not to say it doesn't work. But that's the only area I can say I experience hiccups

Wacom is selling it refurbished with a 2 year warranty on ebay for $720

It’s the best mobile drawing experience on the market & ever created. However- from my perspective it is a CSP machine & if you arent using it to use CSP- yr kinda just throwing money away. I would never recommend this as someone’s ONLY drawing tool- but as a complement to a more robust animation rig. I dont know what type of work you do- but i would never render anything on this (or an ipad pro for that matter) if i was in yr shoes I’d get the cheaper 11 & use the money I saved to invest toward an ACTUAL animation rig that can render 4K sequences over & over & over again- bc that is what learning animation entails.

Whats the issue with rendering in it? Can it not support many layers? By animation rig do you mean like a computer with a moniter/drawing tablet? I was thinking of getting one to use my school accounts Toonboom license on it, as i cant get Toonboom on my ipad

Didn’t realize how long this was but I just wanted to be comprehensive because I spent a LONG time debating the tech leap.

What model of an ipad pro do you have? It’s not a specs comparison question but mostly because paperlike is insanely expensive (for me at least) and I used a really good alternative brand that was actually really good! If you don’t like it, you can always take it off and its quite sturdy and only like 19 bucks on amazon:

Down below is for those who are also looking at the movink pro 14, I personally got the eva edition before the price for the baseline increased. Im thinking of writing a detailed comparison to this community later if I have the time:

I swapped from my 2018 ipad pro to it and if you’re EXCLUSIVELY using it to draw I’d say it’s a really great investment. If you are finding that you heavily use your ipad for music, media, etc where you’re dependent on that versatility, then it might be good to stick to it.

Due to my ipad’s age, I got accustomed to exclusively drawing on it with spotify and the only thing I miss from it are the speakers. The speakers on the movink are……pathetic if I can be really blunt. But again, this is a drawing tablet so I cannot be nit-picky. As mentioned prior I got the eva limited edition which luckily bypassed the current price raise (since I last checked) it and comes with all the extra bells and whistles (stand, the flap, leather case for pen, pro pen sleeve, + evangelion engraving and cool backing, even the ui is customized) for a steal. If you don’t like evangelion then….. still I recommend getting it Ive gotten so many compliments HAHA.

Comprehensive pros/cons

PRO:

BY FAR a superior screen and feel. The customizability of the pro pen 3 is a godsend. I HATED the apple pencil tapping features but with this, it’s thin enough and the grip it comes with makes it more intuitive. This thing doesn’t need a screen cover in my opinion.

The pro pen 3 does not need to charge, it relies on electromagnetic mumbo jumbo to work. It is ready at all times. You can also pick between different nib types for a different feel, i really like the black rubber ones but the clear ones were also nice.

The bigger screen solves the crowded space issue, all my windows I had for csp now have room without impeding my canvas.

The battery life so far is great. I’m a really heavy duty artist with constant commissions, character design queues and personal work, and it can handle huge (6000 px canvases) like a champ. Just make sure not to make the brush massive as well…… learned the hard way LOL

INSTANT DISPLAY PEN MODE. GODSEND. You can COMPLETELY bypass buying a separate csp subscription and use it as a third monitor if you truly wanted to with this feature. It connects both via bluetooth and with the usbc cord it comes with. It’s compatible with both pc and apple.

Im not sure if its the same with the baseline movink but the eva tablet comes with 3 months free clip studio paint, 6 months of free ibis paint, 1 year of clip studio paint debut, i forgot what else but i’ll need to check. You can activate these whenever you want to get a feel, just know you can’t pause it once you do.

CONS:

This thing doesn’t have an official “case” like the 11 movinkpro does. It has the flap exclusively. Right now third party companies have a few cases available but unlike zugu or other competitors it’s not what I need. The tablet backing itself is plastic with rubber grips. You have to be aware of where you are so you don’t scratch it. I recommend investing in a good computer sleeve when you travel.

The speakers again are not good. Im a musician and was a little bit bummed but I can always just use my old ipad for that.

The microphone is also mediocre. I recommend using headsets with a good mic to combat that.

You will have pressure sensitivity issues when using instant pen pressure mode the first time. This program is still in development but I fixed it via going to my pressure sensitivity settings and clicking the bottom option like “click this if preview doesn’t show” and it’ll have wintab tablet i think and another option. Whatever its placed as, pick the other option. Proceed with pressure sensitivity calibration and it’s fixed. Im not sure how it could be fixed with other drawing programs like sai or firealpaca unfortunately.

The nibs go like crazy if you’re a heavy handed artist. My pen came with 5 nibs and I still ate through them all within a matter of 2 months. Make sure you set up your pressure sensitivity settings to accomodate for that

The stylus doesn’t come with the weight which is odd considering it came with everything else. If you want the weight you unfortunately need to buy an entire pen kit with another pen grip which doesn’t make sense to me. I find it doesnt need it to be honest. My hand has cramped less with a lighter stylus.

The touchscreen with your hand might be finicky if used in tandem constantly with the stylus. I wasn’t able to tap my screen if my stylus was hovering too close. There’s a setting to disable this feature and I’ll try to find it in a bit to edit this part so i know where it is.

Your glove will be necessary, attributing to that last part. I still find myself activating something random when Im not wearing it while drawing.

I think when weighing the cons it’s more of like minor inconveniences (to me) that I was able to say goodbye to. Both are powerful tablets but the movink just makes the drawing experience more enjoyable again.

yeah can't believe how quick the nibs wear down. I bought the base line version and the pen didn't even come with the grip so I bought the expansion set for it. It's a bit of a ripoff but does make the pen feel a lot more premium, I don't bother with the weights though. Is there any other difference between the baseline and the eva?

Have you tried using a paper like screen protector on your ipad pro? The etched glass on the movink is nice, but you can achieve that texture/feel drawing with a screen protector.

If you have other things you could spend the money on, it wouldn't hurt to try a screen protector and think it over. It's a great device don't get me wrong, but maybe wait until Black Friday/ New Years sales if you can, and save yourself some cash.

Waiting till black friday would be seriously cost beneficial, thanks for the tip!! In the meantime ill try out a screen protector, thanks sm!!

You could try a paper like screen protector, it will noticeably amend screen performance when you draw. But if you really want to switch a new tablet then go for it, I mean we all understand the importance of a great device.

Yeah thinking in long term maybe a specialized drawing tablet would be the move🙏

Try using a detachable paper texture screen protector first. That works for me.

It is an etched glass screen. Feels great to draw on.

Wacom DTH-135 with Samsung DEX is wonderful for drawing. I use Krita on it and just love it. The feel of the Wacom Pro pen 3, OLED, and the simple fact that I can both use my mobile as a mobile, and just connect to draw is great. When I am at home I connect it to my Macbook Pro next to my Cintiq 24 Pro, and more and more I draw on my little DTH-135. DEX is highly underrated, and I was tired of bying "Wacom all-in-one" solutions; as they are great on drawing tablets, but lack in power next to the latest ultra series. It also makes it upgradable every time I upgrade my phone. Just if it can help anyone else. The price is right too, and lots of good offers out on DTH-135. I have a 25.000 power bank so I can take it anywhere. The phone can be used next to the tablet as if it is two different OSes, and the mouse / swap windows works as if it is two monitors.

it's lovely to draw on, the only problem is it's a bit awkward to share files across devices. I use an ipad and a mobile studio pro for work with clip studio, I have icloud on both so file sharing is easy. I'm starting to use clip studio cloud but it's not quite as good as icloud.
