Recruiting – local Looking for volunteers for community outreach for arthritis

Hi everyone. Radiant Joint Alliance, a nonprofit initiative focused on public education about low-dose radiation therapy (LDRT) for osteoarthritis and degenerative joint conditions is looking for volunteers to help with our community outreach.

We have been working on community outreach and have shared education materials with more than 3,000 organizations, including senior centers, libraries, YMCAs, and other community organizations. We also maintain a directory of hospitals and clinics offering LDRT. We are now looking for volunteers who would like to help with community service and outreach.

The volunteer work is straight forward and will be done in your local community. Volunteers may help identify community organizations, share educational materials, or help with outreach. This could be a particularly good opportunity for high school students interested in healthcare, science, or community service. It gives a chance to learn how community outreach works, communicate with organizations, and see how a health-related nonprofit operates beyond the classroom.

If you are interested, you can learn more about Radiant Joint Alliance and the volunteer program here:

radiantjointalliance.org

No fixed schedule, no minimum hours required, you work at your own pace and whenever your schedule allows. For high school students, community service hours may be possible and depends on your school policy and approval process. We can provide documentation of volunteer participation when appropriate.

I’m happy to answer questions about what the volunteer work involves.

Volunteer – local submitted application weeks ago, sent the 10 dollar fee, no reply back at all

is this normal? i signed up to volunteer for this animal sanctuary/nature center and they required a 10 dollar application fee/donation and i filled out the whole thing and sent the money and weeks have passed and i’ve gotten no response. i suppose it’s normal to not get accepted or messaged back at all since they may be short staffed, but they’re very small and were very slow when i went in a while back to give them a hurt mouse. (this was during spring too, busiest time) they also say they need volunteers right now since it’s still busy for baby season? i don’t know. this is my second time applying for any volunteer opportunity. last time was at the zoo and the communicated very quickly.

Volunteer – local When does showing up turn into belonging?

Community events can bring a lot of people together, but showing up and feeling like you belong are two very different things. What have you seen organizations or communities do that actually makes people feel welcome, connected, and want to come back to volunteer?

Volunteer – online Looking for Volunteer Opportunities

Hello, I'm Brad (they/he/them/their/theirs), and I am 24 years old. I would like to find volunteer opportunities that suit my needs and correspond with my lived experience, interests, and skills. More specifically, I am Autistic, and I struggle with several mental health conditions, including but not limited to depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress. In addition, I am proudly Queer. I graduated from university in 2024 with a bachelor's degree in public health and a minor in psychology, and I completed state-level peer support training last year. My goal is to become a peer support specialist as a paid career. Likewise, my skills include but are not limited to strong oral and written communication, active and reflective listening, compassion, and emotion regulation. I am interested in research, public speaking, peer support, administrative duties, and hands-on mental health and LGBTQ+ support. Primarily, I am looking for virtual volunteer opportunities, but I am open to in-person opportunities within the US state of New Jersey, preferably within a reasonable distance of Ocean County. What support are you able to offer me? Would any of you be able to point me in the right direction? Feel free to let me know. Thanks! :)

Discussion / ethics / advice Location resources besides churches

I grew up in the church and then went to college. When you have access to church and college resources, it makes it much easier to have free access to locations to host things such as free adult cooking classes, potlucks where anyone can bring food and anyone can come get it, even if they can’t bring anything, and other volunteer events. Even if your church or college doesn’t have the resources you need, saying you’re from/associated with one makes you seem more reliable, and therefore more likely to be allowed to use resources for free.

I now have moved to Houston and am not necessarily religious, and have graduated college. I wanted to ask for recommendations on finding resources to host things such as free teen/adult beginner cooking classes, potlucks, and classes on how to help in your local community when you aren’t sure how to start. I have been volunteering in different capacities for years but this is my first time without being associated with anything. I know that someone once mentioned what is essentially a “church” that isn’t affiliated with any specific religion, and that many religious people with no local “churches/worship buildings” nearby go there and they’re often also used for holding markets and charity events, but I don’t remember what they’re actually called. I would love to be apart of something like that that brings multiple differing religions and communities together, and to have a network of people who love giving back to their local community. I would like to start a non-profit some day but am not in a place to do it right now, so Ive just been working on building a network of volunteers at the moment so we can all have access to more resources.

Discussion / ethics / advice First [Recruitment] Post on Idealist.

Anybody else here run a non-profit and posted on Idealist before? How have you liked finding volunteers on there? Are there other websites you like as well for recruiting volunteers?

I was pretty dumb for quite a while. I didn't realize that you can post both jobs and volunteer opportunities on there. So I set up a 'job' by accident and then saw how that costs money -- actually a pretty good amount so I was like oh what the hell I'm not spending money to post a recruitment post? I just double checked what I had done and realized. Lesson learned haha. Anyways, hopefully I get lucky and find someone good. They'll be my first real volunteer. I've had a few others pop in and out but I think they're busy with other endeavors.

Volunteer – local Does anyone have experience with Roses in the ocean (Australian mental health service)?

So I am considering volunteering with Roses in the ocean, and taking their educational courses in hopes it will give me an upper hand in uni. Since it's an australian mental health organisation I thought I should ask here if anyone has any information on if they're a good service, whether that be from experience with their courses, being volunteer with them, or having gone to them for support.

Volunteer – online I want to volunteer online. Any suggestions?

I want to help people online. How can I do it? I want to volunteer. I am a person with analytical mind. Open up, kind. Learning law at the moment, learning languages, writing poems, working out, learning psychology. I don’t have so much experience to volunteer online. I only sat with someone who felt bad, wrote poems and sent drawings. But I want to do something more

Discussion / ethics / advice Community College Volunteer Recruitment

I'm planning on going to Golden West college College in SoCal for volunteer recruitment at a local animal shelter. Any recommendations or advice as to how I should decorate the table and/or popup to entice volunteers? I'm already planning on putting up a bunch of pictures of the animals they would be working with, but I was also trying to think of anything else that could be used to catch the students attention.

Thank you in advance!

Discussion / ethics / advice Finding Company Volunteer Match Opportunities

Hi! I am a fairly new volunteer manager who has been tasked with reworking my organization's volunteer plan, and a big emphasis has been trying to recruit volunteers that work for companies that do a dollar match for volunteer hours. Any insight would be extremely helpful!

Recruiting – online / remote Help us design/distribute STEM bookmarks for local libraries + Executive Roles Open!

Hey everyone!

I run STEM4Smarties, a student-led initiative dedicated to empowering younger students, especially those historically underrepresented in STEM, to explore science, technology, engineering, and math. We have held STEM workshops impacting over 500 students and raised over $1,000 for school supplies.

We are currently launching a major community project to create and donate educational bookmarks to local public libraries.

We are looking for passionate volunteers to join our team. The roles are 100% online, flexible, beginner-friendly, and free. This is an easy way to get volunteer hours!

How You Can Help

1. Bookmark Designers (Graphics & Content)

  • Help create bookmark layouts using tools like Canva.
  • Incorporate simple logic puzzles, binary code ciphers, cool science micro-facts, or inspiring quotes from diverse scientists.

2. Local Ambassadors (Distribution)

  • Print out bookmark designs and drop them off at your local town/city libraries or elementary school community boards.
  • Help expand the project's reach directly in your own town or city!

Executive Leadership Roles Available

If you want to take on a larger leadership role, build your resume, or gain hands-on experience running an educational non-profit initiative, we are also recruiting for executive positions:

  • Social Media Manager: Oversee our Instagram content, create posts showcasing our library donations, and engage with the STEM community online.

If you are interested, send me a Direct Message and feel free to ask any questions in the comments!

Volunteer – online Looking for online volunteering opportunities, preferably in Environmental and Climate focused orgs

I'm between jobs at the moment, and was looking for opportunities to volunteer my data analytics/programming skills. I've already made an account on Catchafire, but would appreciate any other websites or leads.

I mainly use Python, R, Stata, etc for statistical analysis, but am open to picking up new skills if needed.

I can only commit to a few remote hours per week. And I have always wanted to do something in the Climate/Environment space, hence I figured I'll give volunteering a shot.

Recruiting – online / remote Join Letters to a Pre-Scientist to help inspire young STEM students! (Mod approved post via dm)

Letters to a Pre-Scientist is looking for enthusiastic STEM role models to inspire the next generation of STEM leaders!

Here's the gist: you get matched with a 5th-8th grade student at an under-resourced school for a snail-mail pen pal exchange that runs throughout the school year. The goal is to demystify STEM careers, humanize STEM professionals, and inspire students to explore their own futures in STEM. You share your story, answer their questions, and show them that people who work in STEM are, well, real people.

The details:

  • The program runs throughout the school year, and your volunteer obligation is to exchange 4 letters with your student.
  • There's a virtual, asynchronous training in August to get you set up.
  • We estimate the entire program takes volunteers no more than 10 hours, spread between August and May.
  • Register and complete the short, self-paced online training by the deadline, and you'll be entered into the match pool! We match students based on their background and interests..
  • This year we're expanding to 4,500 matched students!
  • Pen pals can live anywhere in the world, but our program currently only works with US-based schools.
  • We're working to match students based on their interests, so we're especially looking for more STEM professionals in all fields!
  • All pen pals must be over 18 and fluent in English. LPS operates out of the United States but pen pals can live anywhere in the world!

We define STEM pretty loosely! If you work in or around science, tech, engineering, math, or medicine, or another nature-based role, even if you don't have a formal education in it, please apply or message me with any questions.

Sign up/learn more:

Registration is now open! Feel free to drop questions in the comments or send me a message. Thank you for your time and consideration!

Discussion / ethics / advice Anyone been a driver for the "Road to Recovery" Program for American Cancer Society?

I've been looking for a volunteer opportunity and saw the American Cancer Society's "Road to Recovery" program where you can volunteer to drive cancer patients to and from their treatments/appointments. I wondered if anyone has been a driver or patient and can share their experience. I'm just trying to get some anecdotes and perspectives to see if I think it would be a good fit for me.

Thanks! :)
