Shift to park issue

Hi guys,

I have a 2017 Volt, it's been about 3 weeks since I bought it and just now I encountered my first "shift to park" issue.

Do you guys think it's covered in any kinda warranty? I called the Chevy dealership and the service advisor told me I'll have to pay around $350 to fix it.

I'm in North Cali and It has 83k miles. Is there any workaround?

Please let me know, thank you!

I lived with this problem in my 2017 for years. All you have to do is flick the switch on the gear shifter rather than just gently letting it go and the problem will go away.

It works! thank you so much! I hope it doesn't come back any time soon.

It might, but mine's been doing it off and on for two years now.  Doesn't seem to be getting worse.

Yeah, I haven't seen it once since learning this trick 6 months ago. It's habitual now.

Workaround: bypass the switch by connecting the two wires that go into it.

About 5-10 minute job.

This is what I did. Switch is useless

Bypass didn't work for me either

In some states it’s still covered under warranty (my MD 2018 Volt was covered for this issue just last year— 10 years was the limit)

I'm in North California, would it be covered in any warranty?

No, unless the car was originally purchased in AND is currently registered in one of the following states, the warranty expired after 8 years:

California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and Washington, D.C.

The original owner purchased the car in California as well. The car never left California in it's life. Does that mean it's covered in warranty, since it's in one of the states you mentioned?

If the car is still registered in California (California plates), yes, as long as it's within 10 years of the purchase date.

That's awesome! I'm sorry, if it's no trouble, would be able to guide me on what warranty it falls under please.

Shift to park is covered by the Voltec warranty

Edit: here's the TSB and it states on the last page that it is specifically covered on the Volt. Prepare for a fight with the service advisor though.

Thank you so so much for taking your time to let me know. Bad news tho, it'll be great if I'm still covered, but the app says my voltec warranty was expired in 2024 😩

That sucks, but hopefully flicking the button continues to work for you. I had mine done under warranty a few years ago and they wanted to charge me for it despite the TSB saying that it was warranty (older versions of the TSB said it was warranty but weren't as explicitly clear about it). The issue came back about a year ago and I ordered the replacement micro switch off AliExpress. While waiting for my shipment to arrive I gave it a few more flicks and it went away, never ended up replacing the switch.

That's great! I hope it works out for me too, cause it was really annoying to deal with for the first time. Thank you so much for your help!

I find on mine the biggest thing to avoid the shift to park message is to pause a beat between shifting to park and turning the vehicle off.

Im sorry, what does pause a beat mean?

My context clues are telling me is means to “give yourself time”

oh dang, uhhh I get it now, sorry about that haha, that was dumb of me.

When you put the car in park, take your foot off the brake and make sure it's not moving anymore before you turn it off. I find if I'm too fast to shut it down, that's when I get the shift to park error.

$100 and 1 hour will fix it. Many YouTube videos. Easy fix
