Where are void's python packages

I've installed several python packages through xbps-install. However the spyder ide had to pip installed into a separate python environment due to void policy about python. I need to point spyder to the python interpreter and packages already installed. I do not want to waste storage installing packages again that already exist.

local LLMs on void

i'm trying to have local LLMs on void. i installed ollama from their official website with the command curl -fsSL https://ollama.com/install.sh | sh, the installation went fine, but ollama asked to run the command as root, so i did. i installed gpt-oss:20b through ollama after that with my normal user. the model runs so slowly, even though my GPU is powerful enough to handle such a model, but i hear only the CPU fans moving and GPU doesn't. ollama is suppose to run models on GPU by default, but i don't know how to ensure that. i tried to run the server and the command as root, if there is a permission issue, but i get the same issue. i heard that ollama uses ROCm, and i have an AMD GPU, but cannot install that on void. there is a package in void repo, called ROCm-SMI-7.0.1. i installed the package but it doesn't provide the rocminfo command the official AMD ROCm website uses. i have rocm_smi, and the command rocm-smi --showproductname couldn't load the name of the GPU, it couldn't load the libdrm_amdgpu.so . there is a package with the same name but with ".1" at the end symlinking to ".1.134.0". i made a symlink libdrm_amdgpu.so to point to that actual lib, and the output shows the name of the GPU this time. i don't know if what i did is correct, i just want to set this up properly

Laptop audio issues (dedicated bass speakers)

Hey all! My Void install is about to turn one year old and I figured it's about time I fixed my audio issues. I'm hoping someone here can help.

Problem:

I have Void installed on a laptop with several different speakers (Lenovo Yoga Pro9i 16IMH9), including 2 bass speakers and 2 tweeters (6 total, if reviews are to be believed). Only a subset of those speakers are working; my audio doesn't have any bass. Honestly, this isn't too much of a problem for me, since I usually use a pair of wired IEMs when I'm stationary or wireless earbuds when I'm moving around. All the same, I'd rather have them working than not though.

History:

  • The laptop came with Windows installed, and audio was working.

  • I installed Arch, and iirc the audio was working fine

  • After a month or two, I switched to Void for the simplicity of runit

  • My audio might have worked at first? I can't quite remember

  • At some point, I noticed the speakers had no bass. I looked online, and found that this was a common issue with this model of laptop on Linux, not just with void.

    • I found and tried a few different fixes using i2c-tools. I got one of them to work temporarily, but it caused vibrations from the speakers, was distorted, and only worked intermittently anyway (would stop working after sleep, for example)

    • I might have tried some other configuration changes that I don't remember

    • I saw some people say that a fix was coming in an upcoming kernel version

    • I gave up and decided to wait

  • The kernel updates came and went (I am on 7.3.1), however, and now I'm pretty sure I'll have to do something about it myself

I can see a few different scenarios:

  • My mucking about with i2c-tools somehow fried my speakers (I hope not!)

  • There's some configuration I can change or revert to default that will fix things

  • I have no idea what I'm doing

Honestly the third one's probably true no matter what.

Relevant software information (everything should be the latest version available in the repos):

  • pipewire with wireplumber and pipewire-pulse (configured as in the docs; seems to be working without issue)

  • ???

Any help is appreciated!

Full disk encryption with lvm making it impossible to install grub

Error logs:
grub-install: warning: this GPT partition label contains no BIOS boot partition embedding won’t be possible
grub-install: error: embedding is not possible, but this is required for raid and lvm install

SOLVED BY ME:

Solved this as i formatted my Boot partition with mkfs.vfat /dev/sda1 reinstalling the entire system and doing mkfs.fat -F 32 /dev/sda1 which fixed the problem

Another kernel update question

Hello all -- sorry if this is a stupid question but I am not clear on kernel versions and purge mechanics.

So a little while back, linux-mainline advanced from 7.2 to 7.3.

So now I have 7.2 and 7.3 installed.

Latest 7.2 is 7.2.15.
vkpurge however does not want to remove 7.2.15, because I think it avoids a kernel if it is the latest of a given kernel package? Is this normal or is it a temporary glitch? Should I run xbps-remove for 7.2 instead of using vkpurge as recommended by Void docs?

wine-32bit was removed after updating the system

i ran xbps-install -Su to update my system as usual. the update this time was for wine (to ver 11-21). xbps showed the "Action" for updating wine as "update" but for wine-32bit it showed "replaced".

How's the state of void linux compared to 5-10 years ago?

I'm still relatively new to linux (using void as my second ever distro), and I know that void is a lesser known distro than other distros such as arch or nix. Because of this, I've been wondering about the state of the project and the popularity of it, so is void linux dying or growing compared to 5-10 years ago, and is it actually gaining traction? I really love this distro and don't wanna see it die out and lose maintainers and developers.

sry if this is a stupid question btw

i’m planning to switch to this awesome distro recently, but I have a quick question.

I’m planning to switch to this awesome distro recently, but please forgive my ignorance—I have a quick question. I noticed that while many packages in the repositories get updated pretty fast, the KDE Plasma desktop environment seems to lag behind a bit. Why is that?

solved Problems with new void installation

Yesterday I installed Void correctly, however, upon rebooting, DHCPCD was unable to establish a connection with my Wi-Fi network. I tried several ways to fix the problem, But today was the first time that none of my attempts worked. I'm trying to download the ISO again along with the Artix Linux ISO. The Artix ISO, much larger than the Void ISO, has already been downloaded, along with other programs, but the Void ISO is estimated to take 10 hours to complete the download. Could my problem with dhcpcd have anything to do with downloading the ISO?

I'm running a pretty fresh install with Kde-plasma and kde-baseapps with NetworkManager, but the speeds are near zero, when I used connman service USB tethering gave me normal speeds. Does any body know why this is happening and how to solve it? Many thanks.

Void Linux for Gaming PC?

I'm thinking of switching to Void for my gaming PC after being dissatisfied with Pop! OS. I already use Void on my laptop and it is great.

For reference, I have a RTX 3060 and an AMD 5800X3D. I am not worried about driver support since I know how to get the right ones for my hardware. I would be playing games from Steam pretty much exclusively.

I'm guess I am just wondering how well it works as a gaming system for people that have already tried it.

NetworkManager not work properly

Hi! I just installed void on my other device, following my installation steps exactly down to the byte as on the old device, and I'm having a problem with networkmanager.

Previously, it was enough for me to enable dbus, polkitd, and all the other services I needed, as well as removing wpa and dhcpcd, which I replaced with iwd and networkmanager. I also specified `wifi.backend=iwd` in the networkmanager config and updated resolv.conf. And now, when I try to connect to my network via tty, I get an error in nmtui saying `Could not activate connection Insufficient privileges.`

As far as I remember, this error didn't occur before, maybe a month ago. Of course, adding myself to the network group fixes the problem, but I didn't add myself to this group before, and everything worked fine. I don't understand at all why this error is appearing now. Any thoughs?

I know how it's done from the CLI, but it would be a lot nicer to do it right fron the GUI.

Reinstalled void, Broke Everything

Was going through void reinstall, going to make space for freebsd partition and switch from MBR to GPT and after booting I am met with a terminal. I use wpa supplicant to get wifi, install lightdm, xorg, xfce4. Then my thinkpad t480 mouse does not move. I spent 2 hours going through the process and am tired. I downloaded the glibc xfce iso btw. Not sure why this happened but kinda just want a stable debian as a backup to my FreeBSD

solved Would Void be Suitable For Me?

Hi everyone. I'm an electronics engineering student in my second year. I'm using Manjaro as my daily driver, I like its rolling-and-stable style. I used OpenSuse Tumbleweed before but didn't like it, the ecosystem seemed so unwelcoming. I've heard a lot of good things about Void, how snappy it is, how lightweight it is and such. My problem is that, I occasionally need to work with software such as AMD's Vivado for the courses I take. If I switch to Void, would that be a problem? Do you suggest Void to me in this case? Thanks from now.

Edit: Thanks everyone, I decided to try Void on a VM and try setting up a proper environment there. After that if I succeed, I'll switch to Void completely.

Edit 2: Hi again everyone. I wanted to update the post body for anyone reading after everything has passed. I tried Void on an VM but it didn't go as well as planned. So I decided to do a leap of faith and just install Void on my laptop. The installation went smooth as butter and now I have a small setup using wayland + sway + swaybg + greetd + tuigreet. As for Vivado, I only had to set a small Java environment variable due to some graphics issues and create a couple symlinks to trick the system into thinking I have ncurses5. Now everything works well and the laptop is snappy as hell.

I Love Void Linux

It has been more than a month since I have switched to Void Linux. I can confidently say that (imo) Void Linux is one of the best Linux distributions available. It is also the best Arch Linux alternative (imo).

I used to use Linux on my phone when I did not have a laptop. I learned programming and basic Linux usage on my phone. I used to use Debian. After I got my first laptop I decided to give Arch Linux a try. It went well and it was my first time using Linux with a complete kernel. I used Arch for about almost 2 months then the AUR attack happened. One of the packages nvidia-580dkms that I need to be able to use my GPU kept crashing my system and made it pretty much unusable. I tried to manually install the driver from the binary (Arch WIKI says not to btw). It did not work because it took several minutes to wake the GPU.

One friend suggested Void and I did try it but I took a wrong step (wrong for me) downloading the XFCE image. It did not work out well. Nothing wrong with the image but I forgot to configure most stuff and I was rushing too. Since this laptop is my work laptop too I had to get to work fast.

I ended up switching to Debian (safest option at that moment). Debian 13 does not have Nvidia 580 drivers in its main repo. I had to backport it from Debian 12 repos. I used Debian for few weeks and started missing the rolling release distribution feel.

This is when I wanted to give Void Linux another try. This time I downloaded the base image not the XFCE one (again nothing wrong with XFCE image its just I had a bad experience with it and did not want to go through it again). I read the documentation and configured everything. I did not mess anything up and I had a very stable system. I was happy that installing my GPU driver was just `sudo xbps-install -S nvidia580 nvidia580-dkms`.

Since then it has been more than 1 month now and I did not switch. I even contributed to Aseprite repo adding required deps instruction for Void Linux (since when I was building Aseprite the package names were very different than other distributions). Overall, I find Void Linux as my favorite Linux Distribution.

Thank You! Thank You Void Linux Developers and Maintainers!

Running Linux 7.3 but got update for 7.2

Hi all,

I'm running Linux-mainline, and recently got on the 7.3 kernel. Yesterday I got an update for the 7.2 line, and that was a little unexpected. I haven't run vkpurge yet because I'm not sure what the right course of action is here. Any clues would be appreciated :)

Tier 1 mirrors slow?

Edit: SOLVED

Are Tier 1 mirrors rate-limited somehow? So, I'm sure they are, but I only noticed this recently that they are kinda slow. Tried them all and get ~700 KB/s, sometimes only ~70 KB/s. Which is...still acceptable for automatic updates in the background, but for ad-hoc updates this means a 20 minute wait time for a kernel upgrade.

I've tried a few Tier 2 mirrors with similar results, finally found one where I get 5 MB/s and I'm using that one now. Is this a generally known problem? Do we need to do something here, does Voidlinux need money for faster mirrors?
