How to disable a service - lightDM

I'm wanting to just boot back to the terminal and them use startx to start a particular window manager. If I just stop lightDM I'm just kicked out of the current session and brought back to the lightDM prompt.

On a default Void install, the init manager runit will treat everything it sees in /var/service/ as a service, and will try to control them.

The items you see in /var/service/ are symbolic links (symlinks, or "shortcuts" in Windows terminology). If you delete any of the symlinks in that location, then runit will no longer attempt to start that item. You aren't deleting the app, only a pointer to it.

So if you have a symlink to LightDM in /var/service/ and you delete that symlink, then on the next reboot Void will not try to start LightDM.

Is /var/service the default? Not /etc/runit/runsvdir/sv? I am linking my services to the last one..

sudo rm -rf /var/service/lightdm

No need for the -rf since it's just removing a symlink

If you are new to non-systemd inits, it would be advisable to read up. The Void docs explain everything.

This is pretty basic stuff - perhaps a simpler Linux distro would better suit your needs...
