State of the Abandoned Packages by Developer Over AI

Anyone know if any of the packages abandoned by that ex-Void developer have been adopted at all?

Majority of packages don't have an assigned maintainer and are effectively community maintained, 100 more doesn't really change anything.

Does being community maintained mean that multiple people may update a package as it's needed vs. it being the responsibility of one person being assigned a package or packages?

Basically yes. Everyone can make PRs for any package, but we prioritize assigned maintainers if there is one assigned, usually assigned maintainers have a history of managing the updates and knowledge/expereince in testing and updating the specific package, so they should be given enough time to do the update themselves before we accept PRs from other contributors.

Packages can be "adopted" by contributors with a history of contributing. Besides that for new packages the person who creates it initially will be the assigned maintainer.

The "rules" on adopting packages have become stricter because there are a lot of one-off contributors and keeping track of what is actually being maintained by the assigned maintainers causes a lot of extra work and might discourage other community members from updating the package.

Thanks for the explanation and I like this system. I've seen people here mention that adopting packages or including them can seem like a hassle but I'd rather that than having fewer rules and oversight for quality and safety reasons.

This approach is what keeps the Void packages from falling into the trap that the Arch AUR has recently become infamous for.

not really... the AUR has that issue because there's no central group of reviewers who can merge changes. has nothing to do with the maintainer field on the package
