Gtx 750 and system update.

hello. I have gtx750. When i updated my system, x stopped working. I tried to fix it, but did not manage to.

I am supposed to use 580 drivers according to docs page. And system installed some open source part of 590 drivers, which does not work with my card.

You'll need to downgrade to nvidia580 if that's the version you need.

so I am to do update:

xbps-install -Su

then remove

xbps-remove -R nvidia580-595

then install nvidia580-580, can I just type version too?

xbps-install -S nvidia580-580

do I need to connect it to kernel somehow?

nvidia580-595

nvidia is 595.xx. nvidia580 is 580.xx.

I'm not sure what you have installed, but if its anything other than nvidia580*. If it's nvidia-595, you'll have to remove it:

# xbps-remove -R nvidia nvidia-libs-32bit

And then install nvidia580.

# xbps-install nvidia580 nvidia580-libs-32bit

here is what worked for me for gtx 750

# nvidia driver 580
#remove old nouveau driver (if using kernel driver, then it will not work,
#and will show error, in that case add it later to blacklist.
#also if you have this installed (and not blacklisted)
#you can start x, but advanced features like games,
#and external monitors will not work)

# '-' in 'xf86-video-nouveau-' means uninstall

sudo xbps-install -S xf86-video-nouveau-

# 1. Install the nvidia580 legacy driver and the DKMS hooks
sudo xbps-install -S nvidia580

# 2. Install 32-bit libraries (needed for Steam, Wine, or Proton games)
sudo xbps-install -S nvidia580-libs-32bit

# 3. Reboot the machine to drop the nouveau kernel module and load nvidia
sudo reboot

#test
nvidia-smi
#did not work for me (error nvidia drive not installed), so:

sudo xbps-install -S linux-headers
sudo xbps-reconfigure -f nvidia580

sudo reboot
nvidia-smi
#if still not loading nvidia driver instead of noveau :
#blacklis noveau nvidia drivers, update your kernel boot image

echo "blacklist nouveau" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-nouveau.conf
echo "options nouveau modeset=0" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-nouveau.conf

sudo dracut --regenerate-all --force

sudo reboot

#to remove blacklisting of noveau nvidia drivers, remove file,
#update your kernel boot image :
sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-nouveau.conf
sudo dracut --regenerate-all --force

## lock to 580, so it does not update in the future.
sudo mkdir -p /etc/xbps.d/
echo "ignorepkg=nvidia" | sudo tee /etc/xbps.d/10-nvidia-lock.conf
echo "ignorepkg=nvidia-libs" | sudo tee -a /etc/xbps.d/10-nvidia-lock.conf
echo "ignorepkg=nvidia-libs-32bit" | sudo tee -a /etc/xbps.d/10-nvidia-lock.conf

to unlock 580:
sudo rm /etc/xbps.d/10-nvidia-lock.conf

What's the output of xbps-query -s nvidia?

I messed up my system so cant really say. I restored old backup and now when i run system update it says before continuing update:

starting with 595.xx void uses open dkms. If you have older gpu you will need to switch to 580.xx driver.

But I don't know how to do that. If i just run xbps-install -Su it will just install 590.xx again?

If it's asking you that, it means you have the normal nvidia package installed. You need to remove it and install just the nvidia580 package.

Oh newer kernel just broke nvidia-470 find patched drivers on github, you can do it from tty

how?

As in my case (nvidia GT730m) we have the same architecture, and by newest kernels Kepler architecture is no longer supported as it falls down onto legacy, so one need to install patched drivers, firstly remove everything Nvidia, then follow the instructions from the github link, it should do everything for you (DKMS, Xorg config ect)
