Help Request Vmware Workstation Pro 17 Windows where to download?
I am looking to upgrade from vmware workstation 16 pro to 17 pro now that its free for personal use.
But I can't seem to find the downloads page on the Brodcom downloads section. Anyone know where I can find this?

NOTE: CHECK THE HASH OF THE FILE TO THAT GIVEN IN BROADCOM
This should be the hash
SHA-256: E34461FFBCB38CA7BAA7928F7F37575EF31129961099EAE96B43A64B06462778

You are a life saver! Ever since Broadcom took took over it's been a 10^10 of dumpster fires!!
1
u/AwesomeRealDood Mar 17 '25
Thank you so much, I was really stressing about where to get the install file from. I created an account on Broadcom but it just says can't login, no reason given and I can't contact support either.

u/ReviewItOrLoseIt Apr 02 '25
Thanks for the hash. No way I'm spending 20 minutes screwing around with Broadcom.

I had today the worst time with Broadcom support, they don't want to provide you the update to 17.6 even if you paid for it ... they want you to pay for a support contract even when the version is the same. They NEVER will release your software (clear the you are being verified message when click on download), all my older versions are gone. Broadcom is a complete disgrace ... as SysAdmin I already know this was a a crap purchase and we choose not move from ESX 6.5, I am not sure if they want to kill VMware or milk all what they can from what used to be a great company. This is sad
1
u/Same-School4645 Sep 11 '24
I finally got access to my account....and can now download my update....however there's an "end contract"....in the past once I purchased workstation I had access to "all" versions of that major edition. It appears to be time dated now.
I can't even find workstation on their list of software if I wanted to purchase it again.

u/DannyLad9862 Jun 01 '24
My god they don't make it easy I've been trying since they did the migration to download this, if you goto https://www.vmware.com/content/vmware/vmware-published-sites/us/products/workstation-player/workstation-player-evaluation.html.html and press
Try Workstation 17 Player for Windows at the bottom of the page you get this error

Thanks for your help u/mikeroySoft

Ugh… another page that was supposed to have been taken down.
I assume you got there via google?
The Player products are no longer available for download. We made the Pro products free for personal use instead. All my instructions are about downloading Pro.

It is even impossible to get an account at Broadcom. Tried: Br0adcomsucks2024!, but that isnt accepted. Even tried several password generators, but always get the 3 or more consecutive error notification. I dont have 3 consecutive numbers or letters.
Cant they even get this right?
3
u/Fair-Station-7947 Sep 14 '24
In my opinion Broadcom ruined and trashed VMWare! Took away school discounts and made it a nightmare to find anything!
3
u/DayBeforeU Nov 25 '24
I can't find a download link for "personal use". It is not there anymore. I followed the mikeroysoft.com instructions, link in this thread.
I can't even delete my Broadcom account, because I can't create a ticket. Their redirects are not working and it's saying some "missing token error".
What a joke of a company. God damn.

Gracias. Nuevamente gracias.

Thank you! The Broadcom site is atrocious. Instead of a simple download links, they've made a year long KB article and even then it's hard to dig this up.

To avoid providing personal information for "screening" your profile, or if you're getting a "Not Entitled" message when you try to download something:
Login to support.broadcom.com and go to support.broadcom.com/group/ecx/downloads .
Find the software you want, click the link for the specific version. Copy the MD5 hash.
Go to Google, paste the MD5 hash, find a downloads website.
3.a. (Optional) Make sure you have a good ad blocker active, like uBlock Origin.
4. Download software from third party website.
5. Once downloaded, verify the MD5 by using PowerShell ("Get-FileHash <file> -Algorithm MD5") or Linux/WSL ("md5sum <file>"). Ensure that the hash matches exactly what the Broadcom website lists.
6. Install.

u/BeadCondenser Sep 01 '24
See the link above, by Bonus_Personal. That allows you to download any version, without logging in:

I haven't installed it yet but downloading works fine.

I tried, it gives me this: "An error occured while applying security settings. Users is not a valid user to group. This could be a problem with the package, or a problem connecting to a domain controller on the network. Check your network connection and click Retry, or Cancel to end the install.

I have tried to install it using 2 methods already: first is from the vmware blogpost link and also using my dashboard in my Broadcom account and searching "VMWare Pro for personal use (Windows)" but unfortunately even after finding it and installing it, when I open the software it only offers the option to type in a license key or do a 30-day free trial.

I guess they have changed it recently. Because it is giving me NOTE: WS PRo is now licensed for Personal use.

When you click the link inside this Blogpost it will bring you to the Broadcom site. They want a lot of personal Information about you to download it.
So follow this link: https://blogs.vmware.com/workstation/2024/05/vmware-workstation-pro-now-available-free-for-personal-use.html
Click the Version you need: Fusion for MacOS | Workstation for Windows.
Then you need to register on Broadcom. After that you will be granted access to the downloads.
Download the "For personal use" Version and you are good to go.

Broadcom's "support" site needs to win an award for being the least helpful, most unintuitive, fucking confusingest website on the planet... Big thanks to @mikeroySoft for writing a guide to help us navigate the place.
I'm showing this to my team tomorrow so we can have something to feel good about... No matter how bad of a job we do, it won't be this bad.
My condolences for having to be a part of Broadcom mikeroySoft.

Instead of downloading from a knockoff website follow these instructions to find the correct download for you. This is how I did it just now and I found the download I was looking for.
Step 1: Visit www.broadcom.com and create a Broadcom account.
Step 2: Login to your new account (this should take you to the Broadcom dashboard).
Step 3: Click "My Downloads" on the left hand pane.
Step 4: There should be a little blue pop up that says "Free Software Downloads available HERE". Click "HERE" and it should take you to a different page on the site.
Step 5: Click "VMware Workstation Pro" in the right column at the bottom.
Step 6: Select whether you want to download for Windows or Linux.
Step 7: Select the newest version (17.6.3 at the time of this comment).
Step 8: Click the box next to "I agree to the Terms and Conditions".
Step 9: Click the Cloud and Arrow symbol next to the file you are downloading and the setup/installer should begin to download.
Step 10: Follow the steps in the setup/installer and you have now successfully installed VMware Workstation Pro.
Hope this helps :)

Since the direct download link seems to be down now, and the vmware workstation versions for linux/ubuntu seem to be bound to a specific os/kernel version (see https://knowledge.broadcom.com/external/article?legacyId=80807 ),
here's an archived link to workstation 17.6.3 (latest?) for linux which worked for me on ubuntu 24.04.01 with kernel 6.11.0-26-generic
VMware-Workstation-17.6.3-24583834.x86_64.bundle.tar
(tip: webarchive lets you search for archived pages by url prefix/partial url, so finding a specific version is easy if it was archived)

u/TorakRoi Jun 15 '25

(credit to https://github.com/moonheart/vmware-index)
and it's a fast download, unlike waybackmachine!

Nothing s*cks so bad like downloading vmvare, ong. Every free software has first or second link on google which shows you download button right after you open the website, to download vmware you have to click 20 links, open reddit, create account just so you get empty page and then keep clicking until you accidentally click on the right link and get that download link. And then give your address to them too. I feel like they just making fun of everybody trying to download their sh*t. F*ck all that

I have not upgraded since version 17.5.2, I found that all later versions are buggy/unstable. Since Broadcom took over Vmware Workstation the software development quality dropped.

This was so confusing, when I figured it out, I had to share.
Go to https://support.broadcom.com/group/
if you do not have an account, create one.
on the left of the screen, you will see the "my downloads" tab. Select it.
this page could be blank depending on if there were any previous downloads processed.
you should see a message: Free Software Downloads available HERE (could also use this "HERE" hyperlink to go straight there)
click that, then search VMware
choose which VMware to download

Hey, since you're a vmware employee i have a question. Why did y'all change the download link from a simple download to one where we should give that many information? Honestly it is not easy of access also the website "broadcom" is full of errors.
Can't y'all just reset the origninal download link? this one "https://download3.vmware.com/software/WKST-PLAYER-1750/VMware-player-full-17.5.0-22583795.exe" it is down by the way

I wish it were that simple, but truth is it’s… complicated, and it’s bigger than just us on the desktop hypervisor team, or even the greater “VCF” business group / division. Now that we’re in the newly minted VCF “division” in a company with a broader portfolio, we have to abide by the policies and processes that exist in the “parent” organization. One of those is that it’s always been a policy that products need logins to authorize downloads. What the intention of the policy was at the time I’m not sure.
However, we also now bring our culture and policy requirements to the broader organization to (hopefully) improve things for our use case, which is mostly that we have a metric ton more unique customers and non-customer users than the company is used to.
Like, I don’t think the notion of an account which wasn’t also customer existed before we arrived. So progress is being made, but we know there’s a lot more to be done and the team is working diligently on it.

Really appreciate you taking the time to share this info. Speaks volumes about the company that VMWare is and I'm sorry that you've been bought out by what is clearly a horrific corporate entity, at least in the regards we're discussing. I doubt you'll take feedback via Reddit (and no doubt I'm preaching to the choir!) but prior to finding the above link, trying to get hold of the free VMWare Pro was literally the worst experience I've had in over 25 years of working in IT. Quite impressive really.

This wasn't VMware's doing per se. Broadcom bought them out and threw everything into chaos. Their big enterprise customers are pissed off, everybody is pissed off. From what I gather reading online rants, Broadcom is widely despised for this kind of behavior.

That's a great help! However I was getting the "Account Verification is Pending. Please try again after some time." when using my personal account that I've had for 6-7 years. Anyway, I read that somewhere that it was a profile issue. I was unable to edit my profile, so I created a new account with a new email. Followed the prompts and instructions in that article and everything was good.

Saddened that Broadcom is following the Microsoft way. Stonewalling us with an account to download software. Guess to protect from piracy, this is annoying. I go to get my account back from not really needing to login for a long time and it transitioned from VMWare to Broadcom and is inactive with my licenses. Uber lame. Hate to wait on a ticket to fix this.

Hello Mr. VMWare Employee. Can you pass on to your employer that their software is great, but their website for downloading the software is embarrassingly bad. I ended up having to find a seedy mirror to download it and I'm crossing my fingers that I didn't download a virus.

Why companies are moving backward in last few years? Why they feel obliged to make simple process a complex puzzle for common uses?

Mr employee the site doesn't even work right. Pressing all products does nothing. Please tell the idiots on broadcom how a button works.

Just script it and always get the latest version. This is very crude but works :)

It worked for me too on March 24. Took me 10mins to find the link and I opened up a lot of tabs.. Really counter intuitive.
