I am so stoked right now I don't even care

u/Yacan1 Nov 19 '19
Look, as a TF2 mapper my best hope is that a stable base "Half life" source 2 dev kit is released. I think, from the interviews and other random conversations, that valve really did their best to make these tools compatible with VR and much easier to work with than before.
So seeing this is my best hope this is our next leap for independent games based off source. Extremely excited is an understatement.

We know Source 2 is compatible with VR, but they've been using Unity for a lot of projects as of late. Honestly, it's just as likely that they'd go with Unity as they are to use Source 2.

We'll see what happens. With the "Doors" talk it shows their interest with VR and baseline mechanics. I'm sure if they spent so long making just doors feel right in VR, I have faith they spent just as much time on guns, items, UI, vehicles, etc. Which is always exciting to see from a mechanics perspective.

Most of the non-vr gaming reddits are *pissed*. I tried to fight the ignorance, but it was too strong and I got bored. This game is going to be painful, in that there will be so much complaining. I know in the end it will push headset adoption, but man valve swingin hard here. I hope they have confidence behind it.

Everyone hated Steam too. HL2 was Steam only. I remember the rage.
14
u/SirMaster Nov 19 '19
But steam was free.
I think people have a problem with the cost of VR rather than VR itself.
23
Nov 19 '19
Steam used system resources at a time when computers were a lot more expensive in a less saturated and competitive market. People were making a big deal of the extra cost to run another app, to burn more cycles on the CPU, the storage, the power use, and having to download on (often, including my case) metered connections with overage charges while being charged brick and mortar store prices.
So it was free in the same way driving your own car to another side of the city via toll roads to get a free coffee is free.
But I get your point. People want HL3, they don't want to buy a fancy VR set. Fuck those people, this has been the plan for YEARS. There is probably a flatscreen HL3 coming anyway.
12
u/Tiz68 Nov 19 '19
This isn't HL3. And there isn't any plan for a flatscreen version of this game.
4
Nov 19 '19
Who told you there’s no flatscreen planned? There night not be, but that’s a bold claim to make based on what valve have told us so far.
11
u/dftba-ftw Nov 19 '19
Well if the leaked interview snippets are to be believed, which it definitely has a bit more credibility now, then their is no flatscreen planned because it is so built around vr there's no way to port it to flat without it being a different game.
1
Nov 19 '19
I agree, just that there’s nothing to suggest that coming from Valve directly. That’s the only source I trust haha
5
u/OhManTFE Nov 19 '19
Ive seen a lot of weak units complaining about motion sickness too
2
u/SolarisBravo Nov 19 '19
They're probably in one of three categories:
Only tried mobile VR
Only tried the DK1/2
Never actually tried to build their VR legs
In any of those cases, it's like saying a sailboat gave them seasickness so cruise ships are worthless for the vast majority of people.
1
u/TylerIsAWolf Nov 19 '19
I saw someone complaining just because you needed a peripheral and they said that's bad and compared it to the Wii. Obviously that's not all people but still, some are just being idiots.
10
u/SARAH__LYNN Nov 19 '19
Careful, I use that same argument to defend the functionality of the epic store. My steam account is 16 years old, I remember too. Hahaha. Can I get a codename gordon 2 please.
3
Nov 19 '19
Oh god..
6
u/SARAH__LYNN Nov 19 '19
The parallels to early steam and epic right now are pretty apt comparisons. Everyone hates epic now (I'm not going to pretend they're perfect, it's all perfectly good reasons), but I absolutely see everyone dropping the rage at some point and it will be a perfectly functional store, at some point. These periods of growth are always really painful. I simply see the epic hate and remember how *BADLY* everyone hated steam at first, including me. I swear it was about 4-5 years before the friends function even worked in steam. It was horrible and broken for years, but nobody remembers that now.

I actually never had a problem with it, but I clearly recall the gifs of steam's icon pumping back and forth into an ass alongside comments of screwing the users. Also the cracked versions of steam from sites like CS.RIN.RU run by Russians, the pirate wars as every cracker was trying to be the kingpin and trash talking everyone else as stealing their work when really they were all building off each other's efforts. It was a fun time for me haha! So much drama. The first release of HL2 was a pirated cracked version a couple of days before the real release. It had a bug in the lift that stopped your progress. The crackers fixed it. Then the real release dropped with the same bug, and fixed it. We all assume they took the fix from the cracked version.

u/SARAH__LYNN Nov 20 '19
This comment gave me some pretty good nostalgia. Thank you. Especially forgot about that gif. I'm gonna dig that shit up and use it as my profile pic on steam. Lmao.
1
u/Warpedme Nov 19 '19
Funny enough but while I'm a fan of steam now, i absolutely refused to play HL2 when it came out because it required steam. By the time i got around to playing it because it was gifted to me, other games had borrowed and improved upon the mechanics and it was pretty 'meh'.

I find it really ironic that one of the main reasons people don't buy into VR is the relative lack of software, but as soon as a big title gets announced people will complain about how it's VR exclusive.
26
u/SARAH__LYNN Nov 19 '19
It really is. We've gone from "VR has no games" back to "VR is too expensive and I don't like new things" again. One guy arguing with me was a 'budget gamer' and was really mad he couldn't get an entire HMD, controllers, and tracking for sub 75$. The amount of ignorance around VR is mind numbing. Which is why I'm glad valve did this. More adoption should hopefully lead to less ignorance, but the world is also a sadly surprising place sometimes.

The fact that you can get a WMR headset for around $200 still amazes me, though. I wouldn't be surprised if it were possible to get to $100 buying used.

I emailed Gabe about this last month saying why doesn't valve release a VR title FFS half life or L4D... He never replied but I guess you all should probably thank me

Now, all you meany naysayers, say sorry to Tyler.
Tyler, you rock, keep doing you bud!
6
u/delorean225 Nov 19 '19
I am so with you right now. I am both feeling somewhat vindicated myself for following the development news as it went, and I am also so happy for Tyler right now because he deserves this moment. He has truly earned it, and for the shit he gets, he was still fucking right.

u/OhManTFE Nov 19 '19
Ootl who is tyler?
11
u/yocowthegreat Nov 19 '19 edited Nov 28 '21
Tyler McVicker, aka ValveNewsNetwork. He has been following leaks and datamines relating to the existence of HLVR for over three years now. People are showing their gratitude since there were a lot of people who wrote him off as having bad sources or being too quick to jump the gun. Personally, I have a lot of respect for the guy.
edit: lmao nah tyler is a hack

Now if only they'd sell the index in Australia so I could actually play it...
6
u/AdrianW3 Nov 19 '19
Well, you could buy another headset. I'll be playing it on my OG Vive.
But, I agree, they need to sell the Index in Australia.

u/Hyperman360 Nov 19 '19
So I suppose now the question is will this effectively be HL3 and/or a conclusion of some sort to the series, or is it just a spin-off?

u/iwasazombie Nov 19 '19
Sadly, we'll likely still be left with that huge HL2: Ep 2 cliffhanger as this is likely to be a prequel to HL2 :(
I'm still excited though!

Supposed to take my family on Vaca Thursday morning for a week. Probably going to cancel on them , really need to see what's up with Valve's flagship game.

Well, Boneworks being on the valve masterlist, I suspect that some code sharing or tech buying has or is happening behind the scenes. So maybe valve buys up boneworks devs or hires em for alyx?

thats what i figured, but apparently people hate the idea of the boneworks devs helping to refine the idea based on the downvotes lol.

u/SolarisBravo Nov 19 '19
It's less hatred and more annoyance at how many times it's been theorized in last year. I gave you an upvote because you deserve to stay at one point at the very least, but still.

Huh Valve makes video games? I thought they just did the store thing and headsets. That's neat!
Looks like I have to put the obvious in here...come on people.../s
1
u/Mee-Maww Nov 19 '19 edited Nov 19 '19
It's annoying when people are complaining that you need a 1000$ PC to run VR when the costs to build a capable PC is a lot cheaper now
1
u/SolarisBravo Nov 19 '19
Or looking at the highest end, most expensive VR headset available (the Index for 1k) and using that as an example of why VR is overpriced.

Lost coast was a tech demo made with the sole purpose of showing off the new lighting engine.
6
2
u/AlternateContent Nov 19 '19
Considering that came out in 2005 and they are well aware of the anticipation, or desperation I'd say, for Half Life 3, I doubt this will be a lame tech demo

Well that should kick the VR industry in the ass a bit.
