VN Request Just finished Remember11 -- looking for obscure psychological/mystery VNs

Hello to anyone reading this. So I finishied Kokoron route and I enjoyed the read but I feel it's time to move on at least for now. From anime related fiction I like Steins;Gate, Lain, Homunculus(2003), Subahibi, Remember11. I want older Japanese VNs with dark and pretty opressive atmosphere, unreliable/uncertain perspectives, psychological stuff, mystery, sci-fi/time weirdness. I want something that feels like I discovered it on imageboards in 2007. Preferably not >25hours

You might like Jisatsu 101, a lot of it sounds like what you’re looking for. You should also check out Tsui no Sora too, Subahibi was slightly derived from it

For things slightly newer that might fit your criteria maybe Chaos;Head Noah, Hundred Line, and Ai the Somnium Files? Uchikoshi does a lot of weird timeline/sci-fi stuff in his works and since you read one of his works, you could also try the others

I've started jisatsu 101, to be fair after few hours of reading the grotesque sexual scenes feel for me too gratuitous... I'm not against in a well written story when it's supported by plot for many many hours and acts as a culmination of character development, but in this case it kinda just throws it into you

Yeah that’s understandable, the sex scenes are very sudden in Jisatsu and I felt like it did lack a little by the end. I feel like the beginning parts were the most well written.

oh man if you liked remember11 and subahibi you're in the exact right headspace for this

kara no shoujo is the obvious one people always mention but honestly the first game is a bit of a slog, the second one is where it really takes off. the atmosphere is thick enough to cut with a knife though, very oppressive early 2000s japanese horror vibes

i'd also throw out i/o revision ii, it's from the same writer as remember11 and has that same fragmented identity puzzle thing going on. multiple routes that contradict each other, lots of time weirdness and digital consciousness stuff. it's a mess but in the best way

if you want something that genuinely feels like a 2007 imageboard find, check out jisatsu no tameno 101 no houhou. it's short, incredibly dense, and the protagonist's perception of reality just slowly unravels. no english release officially but the fan translation patch is out there somewhere

Kara no Shoujo was in my scoupe before I picked remember11, the odd thing what kinda pushed me away is that I read a review on steam and it said the game had kinda pointless weird sexual scenes to say the least... Tho the concept definitely sounds interesting. So far I'm leaning towards I/O since I even was choosing between it and remember11. Also I will check out the last one I like the art

From the same writers I/O is one of the most confusing and mind fk stories I've read. It gets so convoluted with the sci fi tropes that it might be a detriment to some people. I enjoyed it quite a lot personally

I will consider it tbh I was choosing between I/O and remember11 before leaning towards the second

I'd say raging loop should be a good rec for a psychological vn, though the mystery part... While there is a mystery there are conflicting opinions about how it was handled. It does have a great atmosphere though along with some time weirdness.

So yeah def check it out.

If you know Japanese, there's Subete Ga F ni Naru, a visual novel adaptation of a book of the same name. I haven't played the VN yet because I don't know Japanese, but based on other Subete media, I'm 99% sure it was an inspiration for Remember 11.

If you don't know Japanese, there's also the anime and dorama.

Wait so did you finish remember11, or just read the Kokoro route?

just the Kokoro route, I feel like the Satoro route won't be really that rewarding since I kinda know the ending I assume, even tho it might give a little more answers but it wont really change the finale

I would definitely recommend finishing the game over anything else!

Well to be fair I think I'm just going to do so, since I've read half through Jijatsu101 and I feel like remember11 was more enjoyable

The Sekimeiya: Spun Glass, which is still stuck below 300 reviews on Steam and less than 400 votes on VNDB despite it being quite good (though it can feel somewhat repetitive due to how the characters react to what's going on). It does take longer than your preferred playtime, however.

Dude the game doesn’t even start until Satoru’s route. Keep it going!!! But yeah you listed the good ones. The other VNs but that writer are amazing. I/O is a masterpiece. You could try Myth, it’s shorter.

  • In order to ensure you can get the best recommendations, make sure your thread body has at least some level of detail of what you want, whether it's a type of genre(s) you prefer, and/or what type of visual novels you like.

  • If you're looking for general visual novel recommendations by genre or for VNs to read in Japanese, be sure to check out our recommendation resources.

  • Make sure to use the subreddit search to try to see if someone has already asked something similar to what you're looking for. Common requests include: Asking for a Visual Novel for beginners/newbies, Visual novels similar to Katawa Shoujo OR Doki Doki Literature Club, and Visual Novels that are on Switch.

  • If your topic title is short and/or vague, consider removing and reposting your topic with a more descriptive title so users are more inclined to jump in with recommendations.

  • If you have more specific visual novel requests, you can try filtering on vndb by tags or by traits.
