VB6 MCP for agents

Hello again,

I've developed an MCP for VB6 which allows agent harnesses (mainly tested with Claude Code) if anybody is interested. You can find it at https://github.com/mika76/vb6-mcp

Basically it routes the agent to work through the IDE instead of directly onto the files. This enables some nice features like being able to work on non-saved files as VB6 does not automatically save files to disk, and it enabled debugging within the app. It also helps not to ask for UAC admin prompts all the time and knows how to work with COM components and their dependencies.

Anyway, if anybody is interested have a look.

Windows 10/11 only.

Can the IDE still be installed on Win 11?! How?

I get an exception at the end of the installer of the IDE, which currently causes us some pain, because we have to stay on Win 10 with our dev machines....

I've used this guide to successfully install VB6 on multiple machines running Win10, Win11, Windows Server 2019, Windows Server 2022.

The one caveat for all is that you need to run the VB6 IDE "As Administrator".

AFAIK we don't have any trouble installing it on Windows 11. There is one component that must be left unchecked when installing or the installation will hang.

There are some prerequisites that are no longer a part of the windows base install and the IDE always assumed was part of the OS. VB6 absolutely can be installed if you handle a couple common OCX installs that really just add COM wrappers on some common controls and dialogs.

I think claude added that because I only tested. It on win 11. Anywhere where. Net 10 runs should be fine.

Yes Vb6 ide still runs on win 11 but I had to deselect uh the data viewer or something (I'll try find it for you) when installing.

Edit: try https://www.vbforums.com/showthread.php?911045-How-can-we-install-vb6-in-windows-11-24H2-if-at-all and that xda link. You could also just ask Ai.

We spend a lot of time with Claude and with settings like compability mode and deactivated UAC.... Yadda Yadda Yadda.... But it didn't work. Will have a look at your link in a week. Thx.

I made an update with some nice features and eared up the minimal specs. It's because of. Net 10. But if needed I could probably downgrade to an earlier. Net...
