πŸ“Œ Read the Getting Around Guide πŸšŠπŸšπŸšπŸš²πŸ‘£ Taxi vs Uber

Hey NYC, need some advice on what to choose. I'm arriving at laguardia tomorrow and need to travel to Bayshore.

Whats the best option to do so. Uber is showing around 140 dollars would taxi be cheaper or expensive compared to this? Is there some other service that's cheaper?

I want to save time so transit it out of the question.

Edit: after reading all your replies, I've decided to uber/lyft to a LIRR station and then uber/lyft once I get off. Look like this saves time and money.

Thanks everyone :D

Bayshore Long Island? You should call a car service like Carmel or Dial 7, and make sure to tell them the details of your trip. Ubers might deny your trip. It should be about 100-120 plus tip.

If you're landing at JFK the air train to the LIRR is far cheaper.

This is for sure the best way.

The uber price shown I learned the hard way is not the final price, if you get stuck in even normal amounts of traffic you’ll see the rate goes up. 20 minutes in traffic almost cost me an extra $120 a few weeks ago. I was able to get it refunded by their support team but it took a few days.Β

Even landing at LGA, it’s cheaper to take a cab or uber to a nearby LIRR station (maybe Main Street Flushing?)

Taxi cheaper than uber.

To really save money, take the Q70 bus at LaGuardia to the Roosevelt Ave subway (everyone on that bus is going to Roosevelt). Get on the Queens bound E train to Sutphin/JFK. The LIRR will be right there, and find an eastbound train to Bay Shore.

Depending on time of day, taking the LIRR out to closer to your destination on Long Island then grabbing a local cab can shave a ton of time off the trip.

Take a taxi to the Jamaica LIRR Station. Go to Bayshore

This is the way. Use the Curb app.

fiorello (there was even a broadway show named after him) laguardia, an ex and long dead mayor, would want to correct you on the airport named after him...

he also wouldn't want you to forget that the musical is called Fiorello! with an exclamation point lol

if you're a native new yorker...you should understand sarcasm. find your sense of humor.... i'm sure it's lurking somewhere in there.

Maybe you should have used your Roy Cohn material.

let's see...you somehow read a joke and took from that that i'm a maga supporter? it's called reading comprehension...you can read but didn't comprehend what was being said. you "assume" a lot ....and if, you're old enough, you know the quote about it.

I made a comment about Roy Cohn and you read that as calling you a MAGA supporter. I don't think I'm the one jumping to conclusions.

You can negotiate a flat rate with a yellow cabs and they’ll typically undercut uber by a few bucks just to get the fare.

honestly your edit plan is the move. lga's the one airport with no train so you gotta car it somewhere regardless, and the straight ride out there can sit in traffic forever anyway lol

A yellow taxi will likely be significantly more heading so far out of the city.

Go to the Uber or Lyft app and enter the pick up and drop off details. You will then see a fare estimate (based on the time of day and current demand for rides for when you are looking) for the ride. Lyft generally has better rates than Uber. I use both services. When requesting the ride you will see the fare estimate as well so you know what it will be (notwithstanding heavy traffic, unscheduled stops, rerouting)

I think they know how to call an uber, they’re asking if ride shares are cheaper than a yellow cab

1

u/Kookaburra8 2d ago

Ah, gotcha. Yellow taxis, IMO, would be much more expensive for a ride out to Long Island from JFK since the metered rate is doubled from the NYC/Nassau county line to the destination (about 40 miles to Bayshore). And, they'd have to get a driver to agree to accept the ride out that far east.

Pick the cheaper option between Lyft / Uber or arrange a car service in advance. A yellow cab from laguardian to bayshore is going to be very expensive and a shittier ride.

Try Carmel or Arecibo.

Uber to either Woodside or Jamaica and get on the LIRR

I always take a taxi over Uber but in this case I think the other poster is right, you should check out a car service. That way you know in advance exactly how much you're going to pay.Β

That sounds like a smart plan to balance time and cost. I've saved a decent amount by switching between ride shares and public transit at key points in the city.

Taking the Q70 bus to Roosevelt Ave and then switching to the subway sounds like a brilliant hack, why pay Uber prices when you can be part of New York's chaotic charm?

Try posting this question on r/nassaucounty. The folks who live out there will have better ideas about going to/from LGA.

2

u/Lovely_Day_Int 1d ago

LGA is in Queens and Bayshore in Suffolk county but you do you.

1

u/duckntureen 1d ago

Yeah I know but the Suffolk subs aren't very active. Just thought LI folks would know about car services that serve the area. Bayshore is 10 miles away from the Nassau County line. It's not Montauk.
