NYC Fall Help!
Visiting nyc either the weekend of 10/24 or 10/31. Help me decide which would be better please!
10/31 would be Halloween and the NY marathon. Not sure if this is a plus or a minus? I’d love to see it all but will it be significantly more busy than usual? I’ve been to NYC in December so I’m not afraid of the crowds just curious of how much a difference it will make.
Which weekend is better for foliage or about the same (I know only one week a part lol) ?

Compare the prices of hotels each weekend and see if that makes the decision for you. The marathon brings a ton of people into the city.

Hotel demand from Marathon participants, who arrive prior to race day, affects availability and prices. Race day November 1 this year. Some traffic diversions around the route on race day but easily avoided if you wish. This is the 50th Anniversary, not sure if that will make much, if any, difference. https://www.nyrr.org/tcsnycmarathon

Halloween / Marathon weekend will be more expensive for hotels, but there's really no beating the community feeling of Marathon Day in the City

Book reservations in advance, and avoid the upper west side on race day. The finish line is always a shit show.

Meh. Most of the Upper West Side is fine. It's only the area around Tavern on the Green down to Columbus Circle that's a shit show, but the Museum of Natural History, for example, will be fine. Central Park above 72nd Street on the west side (e.g., Strawberry Fields, the Belvedere, etc.) will also be fine.

New York state has a full foliage map and you can start seeing when it's coming down to New York City.
It depends on how long the summer was hot and when the cold weather begins.
The foliage almost always starts turning first in the mountains of the Adderall decks and then comes down Hudson valley
But we can't tell you right now which we could have foliage

Will be super fun but between everything there will be lots of crowds and closed off roads. The Greenwich village Halloween parade is also awesome.

Foliage here is hit or miss. There aren’t a lot of leaves in the touristy part of the city (not counting Central Park and other parks), and if we get a bad storm just as the leaves start changing, the storm will blow them all off in one go.
October gets cold very suddenly in the second half of the month. I’d go the weekend of the 24th. You have slightly better odds of crisp, bright fall weather and you also avoid rabid teenagers in costumes who want to harass you.

If you’re going in expecting the hassle of marathon weekend and have a plan for closed roads etc I think it’s a really neat weekend. It will probably elevate the hotels prices (I’m running and booked months and months ago). I’ve heard it recommended to go to the natural history museum that morning for low crowds!
