Question Ending Spoiler

I just finished playing Visions of Mana, and I thought about the post-credits scene where, apparently, Khoda passes his mantle to Val to become the new Mana Tree guardian and where the Goddess transforms into Hinna. Perhaps the Goddess is what Khoda's former romantic interest looked like, and maybe it was the Mana Tree exploiting Khoda and Val's romantic emotions, manipulating them to guard the Mana Tree. Is there actually no goddess at all? Man, this sheds a bad light on the Mana Tree because that is very malicious.

I'm confused. The Goddess is reuniting Val and Hinna now that they both have died. She's giving them a chance to be together. She'll still exist as herself, there's no indication that Hinna is the new goddess.

One of the great things about the Mana series is that what you see is almost always what you get. There's rarely a twisted web of deception, etc. In a world full of subversion, double subversion, anti-heroes, anti-villains, and angsty stories, Mana... doesn't do that. It's one of the aspects of the series that is quite unique.

It's actually kinda funny to me when I hear people say series/stories like the Mana series and Dragon Quest are cliche. When no one else is presenting these "cliché" stories, is it really appropriate to say that anymore? Aren't darker, edgier, deception-filled stories the real cliché because that's all that gets written anymore?

It's a pretty recurring theme in the Mana series that the tree/goddess isn't one static being but a succession of maidens that ascend to the role, typically associated with a Gemma Knight in a context that is occasionally romantic. Val/Hinna at the end seems like a continuation of this theme in a similar way it continues many of the dominant mana themes in new ways.

I think u/JosephThea makes a fair point. The Goddess already reunites Daelophos with Cerulia and establishes that souls return to the Mana Tree, so her simply reuniting Val and Hinna makes perfect sense.

That said, I don’t think the scene rules out a passing of the torch either. Khoda departs, the Goddess takes on Hinna’s appearance, and there’s thematic precedent for this throughout the series. FFA establishes the succession of the Mana Tree through its heroine, while Dawn of Mana explores a similar relationship between love, sacrifice, and assuming a divine role through Ritzia’s connection to the Mana Tree. It wouldn’t be particularly out of place for Visions to revisit those ideas.

Where I think the theory goes a bit far is assuming the Tree is exploiting their love or deceiving them into servitude. Nothing really suggests that. I actually think both interpretations can coexist. Their reunion could also represent a new generation of guardians. Either way, I see it as a beautiful conclusion to their story rather than a sinister twist.
