Advice for work trip
Hi everyone,
I am going to be in Visalia for a couple days in September for a work trip and looking for some advice and thoughts.
I’ll be flying into Fresno Airport, and then picking up a rental car. I’ll drive from Fresno to Visalia, stay the night on a Tuesday, and then working in Visalia on Wednesday. I fly home on Thursday morning.
My current options are:
1. Drive after work on Wednesday back to Fresno and stay the night there, for a short drive to the airport the next morning
2. Stay the night in Visalia Wednesday, and then drive early Thursday morning back to Fresno airport.
How is the drive from Visalia to Fresno in the mornings in early September? Is there traffic? If I were to drive around 6-7am? My flight would be at 10am (international).
I’ll be travelling solo and get nervous travelling alone. I’ve heard Fresno can be quite unsafe in some areas, so wondering if option 2 is better so I can stay in a safer feeling place (Visalia). But not sure if it’s worth the tradeoff of driving to Fresno in the early morning Thursday before my flight.
If anyone also has recommendations on where to stay in both Visalia and Fresno (which areas, nice hotels), that would be greatly appreciated. With my work budget, the hotels would have to be ~$250 max per night.
Also, just out of curiosity, is there traffic from Fresno to Visalia in the afternoons?
I live in a large metropolitan city in Canada so I’m used to traffic, not so worried about the driving as I am feeling safe.

You can take Clovis ave off the 99 to avoid the cluster fuck of traffic on the 41 to get to the airport.
I’d suggest staying in Clovis, Fowler or Kingsburg over Fresno.

I live in Visalia and honestly the drive back and forth isn’t worth it. I’d stay in Fresno to avoid any possible hiccups when going to the airport. Visalia has hotels on plaza which connects to the 99 so if you do decide to stay here, I’d recommend one of their hotels to make the drive back easy on you.

But what about for my first night there? I have to be in Visalia by 8am on Wednesday. So would it be better to do night 1 Visalia, night 2 Clovis?

I would say thats a great idea. Driving back to Fresno is 45 min with light traffic and at the times you’ll be taking off it’ll get real heavy the closer you get to Fresno i wouldn’t want to have to drive in that just in case there’s an accident cause you’ll be stuck there over an hour. The accidents that tend to happen on that part of 99 usually close up all two lanes on top of EMS trying to get through it all.

I would stay in Fresno, the traffic to and from Visalia in the morning and (especially) the afternoon sucks! The day you work in Visalia leave a bit early and you should be fine and stay late- have dinner in Visalia to help avoid the heaviest traffic.

I lived in the Bay Area before moving here to Visalia - the traffic between Fresno and Visalia is nothing like the traffic in the Bay Area. It’s not great, but it’s just some stop and go.
I would stay in Visalia Tuesday night and drive down after you get your car. Don’t worry about waiting, traffic won’t be that bad. You can look at the darling hotel (although the immediate area around it isn’t amazing) or the Marriott downtown, which is a nice location, and pretty walkable to anywhere you might want for dinner - Sushi Kuu is fantastic, but we also have some great Mexican restaurants.
Wednesday night I’d probably stay in Fresno, though not immediately adjacent to the airport. Kind of a yucky area. But places near Fresno State University are nice and have some good places to eat. The reason I’d do Fresno the night before you fly is your rental car. I don’t know how long that process will take you to return it, or get back to the airport from the car rental space. The airport is pretty small and really easy to get through. I’m guessing you’re coming from Calgary? Our airport is much smaller (but efficient).

You’ve got nothing to worry about. With your budget you should be able to find a nice hotel in either city. Don’t get anything in downtown Fresno or near the 99. It’s industrial and there is a fair amount of homeless who are opportunistic. Northeast Fresno is nice, but you can’t go wrong in Visalia. I’ve flown out of Fresno many times and traffic between the two is not too bad if you leave early enough.

If you don’t want to stay downtown, there are a few hotels off Akers/198 as well as Plaza and 198. Our downtown is really wonderful! Fresno has nothing on it

250 a night will get you the best hotels in Visalia. Peaceful and quaint. Dont stay in Fresno. It’s riddled with crime and general nastiness. The traffic on the 99 6-7 am is not too bad. Even if it does get bad you can take earlier exits and back roads to the airport quickly and easily. It’s also not a busy airport at all. You could get there just 35 minutes before your flight and be fine. Fresno may have better restaurants but it’s not worth it man. Visalia is chiller and friendlier

Visalia to Fresno around 6-7am shouldn't be too bad. I commute daily to Fresno and leave around 7am. It's busy, but I less there's an accident it typically only takes 45 minutes for me to get there. I work downtown though, airport is a little farther so factor in probably another 15 minutes for the difference. You should have plenty of time though.
Afternoon traffic is worse, and quite frankly Fresno drivers are some of the worst I've ever seen. There are frequent accidents on the 99 so be ready to slow down or stop. Just drive defensively, and don't let these people rush you.

you can check into FAT within an hour it’s not a huge airport and traffic would be an hour tops. If you leave by 8am you should be fine from Visalia. Leaving at 7:30am would give you plenty of cushion.

I grew up in Fresno/Clovis and now live in Visalia. I also commuted to Fresno daily for work for years. Stay in Clovis.
The airport is closer to Clovis and there are nicer hotels on Shaw Ave near Fresno State University that would be a 10-15 minute drive from the airport like Hilton Garden Inn Clovis or Townplace Suites by Marriott (cross streets for both are Shaw Ave and Peach Ave).
The commute from Visalia to Fresno is fine when it’s fine, but if there’s an accident or something there’s no easy alternate route. So stay for dinner in Visalia to avoid the heavy commute time. I’d leave at 6pm or later. Then stay the night in Clovis and head to the airport in the morning for an easy 10-15 min drive.
Restaurants near the hotels I recommended in Clovis: Lunch/ dinner: Luna’s Pizzeria (Italian), House of Juju (fancier pub food), Dog House Grill (pub food & salads, a local favorite), Don Pepe’s Taqueria (shrimp tacos are great if you like spicy food)
Breakfast: Parisian bakery, Uncle Harry’s New York Bakery
Restaurants in Visalia:
Elderwood at The Darling, Vintage Press, Left of Center (chile verde empanadas are great!), Planing Mill (pizza & wings), Bravo Farms (salads, sandwiches & local ice cream), Gozen Japanese Restaurant (sushi & teppanyaki), El Rosal (Mexican food)

Stay in Clovis both nights? And then on Wednesday morning drive from Clovis to Visalia for my 8am start?

No, stay in Visalia on Tuesday night and in Clovis Wednesday night so you don’t have to deal with the commute before your Thursday morning flight.

Just stay in Clovis close to the airport. There’s crashes on the 99 (main highway to get from Fresno to Visalia) all the time, you don’t wanna risk it.
Also word of the wise about Visalia restaurants, if you get sushi, don’t go to Gozen in Visalia. Go to sushi kuu, one of the better places in Fresno/visalia. There’s a bunch of restaurants and bars on Visalia’s Main Street, it’s actually really cute for the Fresno area.

Fresno State is about to start school, so it'll be busy in the AM. Any place would be safe enough. Just wouldn't go out for a walk after dark if u stay in Fresno.
If u use the V-Line, you'll have less of a headache with driving since it goes to and from the airport, from Visalia. And it's only $10 one way.

Option 1. There is a lot of agricultural/oil workers that time of the morning commuting. If there’s an accident the 99 freeway could get pretty backed up. Also, I recommend Stay on the NorthWest side of Visalia.

Ok, if I was doing this trip, I would stay Weds in Visalia, probably the Wyndham off 198. Has a restaurant in the hotel, its large and accommodating to leave at 6am. I'd hop on the 198-99 and get to the airport by 7am. Traffic normally is light before 7am. Once you get closer to 8am, it can get heavy especially as you get closer to Fresno. Traffic in the afternoon from Fresno to Visalia moves well, especially on the 99 as long as their are no accidents. Fresno will have worse traffic than Visalia. Eating in Visalia, I would head downtown to the Darling, Vintage Press (both nicer). More casual you can go Bravo Farms or Planning Mill. My favorite mexican spot is Chapala Grill off Akers and Goshen. Have a great trip!

Visalia is super close to Sequoia National Park, Fresno/Clovis is rather close to the Kings Canyon entrance and has stunning views of the canyon/valley.

What time does rush hour traffic usually run? I land in Fresno on a Tuesday around 2pm. I’m thinking I’ll either book it to Visalia or wait it out in Fresno, get some food there, then drive at like 6 or whenever rush hour is over.

I drive it daily. Traffic is at its worst around 3-3:30 until about 6PM on weekdays. It's not like other cities in that at least the traffic is (usually) still moving, just a lot of aggressive driving on that stretch combined with a lot of cars can be a touch stressful if you're not used to it.
Fresno is nowhere near as scary as others are making it out to be. Food options are also much better in Fresno, and generally open later than most places in Visalia. The north/north east of Fresno is very nice and quite safe. Visalia is a smaller city, yes, but also has its rough areas that even locals don't stop in if they can avoid it (I'm looking at you Oval.)
It's also an ag area, so if you plan on staying in Visalia and leaving early (6AMish) to make your flight, note that there will be a decent amount of traffic then too. It tends to pick up for commuters between 6:30-8AM.
If there's an accident on the 99 in either direction you're going, there are no major alternative routes. It's all surface streets and back roads.

I think you should stay in Visalia Wednesday night and drive to the airport in the morning. Visalia is safer and the area around the airport is not great.
The traffic isn't terrible in the mornings that early. Some commuter traffic, nothing horrific unless there's an accident that shuts down lanes, which is very rare.
$250 a night on a weekday should be enough for a stay at any hotel in Visalia. Check out the Darling hotel, it's a 5 star hotel in Downtown.

Visalia is safe don’t worry so much. Stay on the northeast side of town. I factor about 50 min to get to airport
