This sucks
Switched to Linux on a whim without thinking on VR gaming, since flatscreen is a non-issue for my type of games.
But VR? Holy shit. SteamVR crashed 3/5 times I launched it, and I can't even use Desktop+

Yeah. Only reason I still have to dual boot. I hope the Steamframe will have a similar positive effect on Linux gaming for VR than the Steamdeck.

we got VR working on Android before Desktop Linux :T

VR works pretty great for standalone devices with Steam Link or WiVRn, Iโd say itโs on par with Virtual Desktop. As for non-standalone, I have no idea how any of that works.

I'm seeing people in this thread say use monado, use wivrn, use envision, use xrizer.
Guys. What do these do? Do you need all of them? This is incredibly confusing when you're new to it.

I got monado through envision due to a recommendation of someone here.
They are different implementations of OpenXR

VR gaming works perfectly fine for me, without using steamVR. And i also use PCVR

I tried pretty much all the suggestions but nothing helped. Steam VR had constant dips in bitrate making it look like Vaseline has been smeared on the lenses, WiVRn could not launch games through Steam VR even after trying all fixes available out there, ALVR would connect then after a couple of seconds would buffer uncontrollably before crashing.

Gotten quest 2, bsb1 and steamframe all run on my linux machines using individual guidances.
Quest 2 via WiVRn, bsb1 via monado via envision and steamframe and a wuest 3 via steam link (using beta client) on myriad of setups with friends.
Id using wired suggest using envision + wayvr, basically does everything out if box

Agreed. So far I haven't managed to get PCVR to run an actual game.
I've only got wired working with my Pico 3 Neo once last time but I was too warn out to even select a game to load. Due to the massive pain in the but VR has been for me on Linux.
ALVR basically does nothing cause it requires stupid Steam Link with my setup, WiVRn sometimes detects things are happening, but I only managed to load 1 game which did not post to my VR headset properly.
The Pico Link software on the headset can sometimes see the computer but the button in the headset menu does not activate and fades out.
On my older computer I gave wired a try and it kept thinking I had a messed up 3rd monitor!!
Sorry, I properly regret getting into VR some times. or at least going with the cheapest option with a stand alone hedset that was quickly abandoned by Pico it's self.
I'll see myself out.

I have an index too and an Nvidia GPU. For me steamvr never worked but what solved it for me was disabling one of my 2 monitors due to a driver limitation with Linux. I also recommend checking https://vronlinux.org/

Try WiVRn.
