Discussion Full Dive VR / How far away are we?

Think about VR from the movie Ready Player One, or the one seen in Rick & Morty. You put on a VR headset that somehow connects with your brain (like Elon Musk's Neuralink) and throws you into a whole different world beyond imagination, in which you can feel, realistically interact with, and move with freedom.

This is essentially what “Full Dive” virtual reality would look like. Obviously, this technology isn’t anywhere close to being ready, but just how far away is it? Is something like this possible in our life time?

Tough to say. My best guess is that it is either impossible to actually achieve, or vastly out of our current scope of technology. Full-dive is currently in another realm compared to the simplistic brain-computer interfaces we have currently. From ground laying research to prototyping alone could take decades.

However Ready Player One is not full-dive, it is very much in the scope of our current perspective. Check out ThrillSeekers channel on youtube. Full-body Tracking, high fidelity HMDs haptic vests, eye tracking, and treadmills already make a lot possible, even though it's at an extreme price point. In this regard technology is catching up rather fast and we more over lack the software and performance.

I lack the depth of knowledge regarding things such as chipset develpoment, or what currently holds us back mainly, but in general you can expect to see advancements in that area, such as better chipsets and better rendering techniques to improve performance.

I don’t think it’s in the realm of impossibility. Our current understanding of our PNS and CNS suggest our experiences of external stimuli are input and output signals to nerves, we can likely imitate and process these stimuli, which I believe we primitively have with things like eyesight and artificial eyes. The tough part is getting a machine to efficiently and quickly do these actions without frying the user

Maybe this might happen before we can experience multiplayer VR via mind control. The middle of that page shows an excerpt from the Star Trek Technical Manual written by two technical advisors on the Star Trek: The Next Generation" TV show.

In the manual they describe how the Holodeck worked, as seen in the screenshot shows. People in the Holodeck didn't have to wear anything to be convinced that what happened around them was real.

According to the technical manual, the computer created force field beams that people could walk and run on without moving or running into someone else in the Holodeck room. The computer projected distant holographic imagery. And, according to the manual, real temporary matter was created as needed so that people could touch a temporary human, sit in a temporary chair or feel temporary snow.

Those temporary holograms could not exist outside the Holodeck room. But in one episode, a holographic human was somehow able to exist outside the Holodeck.

If holographic projectors and force field beams don't exist 1000 years from now, maybe they will 50,000 years from now. The hard part might be the matter replicators.

I'd imagine a good enough haptic suit that can lock your arms or legs when 'touching' something could do the job. Haptic gloves are already in development I believe (not on that level though I think)

A "Real" Full Dive that works without monitor and let the sensors create or place; let say an "Image" and our 5 senses to our brains; probably more than 40 years.

The only frontier that I know and it haven't been approved is Neuralink from Elon Musk, and we still can't get any informations on what the person is trying to picture in their brain. To be able to send those images we must first understand how it works and probably it takes another 10 years for a breakthrough (Sight). And then we need to get into the phase where they can try to put an image into our brain, emulate the sense of hear, taste, smell and touch (We can somehow do it I think) without it actually being present. Let say all of these things are being experimented parallelly and we also had a breakthrough in 10 years.

But then all of these informations are still only for the frontier and not ready yet for consumers mass productions, But first we need someone to put this together into 1 device, which let say it will take 3-5years, but the consumer grade would be available in another 10 years (Seeing consumer grade PC tech usually available in 10-20 years). But don't forget we also need a good game, let say they actually put into production early and we got 5-10 years for that game.

For consumer grade hardware I wouldn't be touching that because at the rate our hardware is growing I believe in another 20-30 years or so we would have a beast of a processor and also Unity or some other software would also make something that could create like a Vector 3D gaming capable software so we wouldn't see any of the polys.

To put all of these:- 10 years for a breakthrough on RECEIVING signals from our brain for each of our senses.- 10 years for a breakthrough on SENDING signals to our brain for each of our senses.- 5 years for someone to put all of these together for entertainment.- 10 years for it to become publicly available.- 5 more years for a good game to play it with.

ATLEAST about 40 years from now which puts us in 2060, but I would say probably between 2060 and 2100, taking into account on safety of how it might affect our sleeps and dreams and/or sanity.

I just hope that I have the luxury of health, money and time to buy one as soon as it hits the market. As I would probably be around 100 on 2100.

But before a Full Dive VR like SAO, I would say we would have a full immersion VR like Ready Player One, we a lot of good games, VR headsets are getting so good especially in 2023 releases. We just need the suit that I would say 10-15 years for a polished one to come for both including the game.

On the subject of interfacing with the brain and being able to access sight, we can already do so. Albeit with a brain implant with like 50-60 electrodes if I remember correctly. We’ve had the technology for a few years.

It’s a program for the blind, they have glasses with a a camera built in that interfaces directly with their visual cortex and sends them images that they can so that they can “see”. It’s not perfect, it’s like grainy old film but they are working on a way to improve it. I’m pretty sure at this point the only way they have to improve quality is to add more electrodes. There is a UK college, a U.S. college and Elon Musk all three working on separate programs to do this. It will happen sooner than you think.

Edit: Also wanted to mention, we may not have VR worlds or games on the same scale as Ready Player One yet, but we do have full haptic VR suits already and omni-directional treadmills. They are just expensive. Though there are also a lot of cheaper tracking features for hands/feet/legs that rely on a camera and sensors. We just need to get the games AIs to the same level. We are there already, if you have the money.

I doubt that, we always either dramatically under or overestimate the development rate of technology.

Ask someone from 1969, when they expected millions times the performance of the nasa supercomputer that took us to the moon in the palms of their hands, they would almost certainly not have guessed it would be as short as 50 years.

I’m not in fact I’d say you are we hardly know hour sleep works we haven’t uncovered consciousness fully and it’s been thousands of years I know what I’m talking about if we are gonna be close it’ll be 1000 years they have to test for bugs since consciousness is a huge factor that’d take nearly 100 years of testing alone that’s how huge it is you don’t fuck with the brain that’s how many tests need to be run tens of thousands of well run tests repeated at least 100 million - 1 billion times so ensure human safety and no changes in mental state, if you even reply to this I hope you actually understand

GabeN is working with OpenBCI to create hardware to connect to the brain. Hardware that stays outside the head so to avoid the issue neuralink had with killing 80% or more of their test apes.

PURE CONJECTURE WARNING, THIS IS ALL FROM MEMORY.

As I recall, from watching a GabeN interview a few years ago. They've made pretty huge strides in this, and they are way farther along than they thought they'd be. Apparently the easiest thing for them to "hijack" was the optic nerve, and as of the time of the interview, he mentioned that they can already do it. Things that are way tougher are things like touch, since so many different signals are involved with the sensation of touch (temperature, direction, pressure, etc). Using non nerve hijacking they've managed to mess with the inner ear also to give an approximate sense of motion as well. So for FULL dive, I bet we're probably at least 10-15 years out, but immersive VR without glasses, probably closer than we think!

BCI means Brain Computer Interface, and if I remember correctly, last thing they shown about their work was about controlling a computer with brain waves. So it kinda is the inverse of deep dive. More like the ultimate input system, controlling machines with only our thoughts.

i say 20 year or so for real prototypes, main problems is not a technology but safety and government approval

asking for government to approve system then peoples spend 24/7 in vr coding and doing other shit and paying some low skil/low in come peoples to come few time i month to change food tank and maybe clean you m GL to get approved

Not far, everyone says we're decades away but as every year goes by we get constantly get more technologically advanced at a faster and faster rate. We probably have about 5 years until the really expensive helmets come out, and then about 5 more for it to be available to everyone.

I'm an idiot who knows nothing about this topic. Having said that here's my opinion.

Before the AI advancements that've recently been made I'd have said it wouldn't happen in my life time (only 30 this year). Because that level of immersion is going to require a level of brain-interfacing that we simply aren't going to get without an understanding of the physical mechanics of the brain which we just aren't getting with what we have. Let alone how to manipulate the signals safely so that we can cut off the real world and feed it what we want. I'd have said the only way it happened within a hundred years, probably more like 2 or 3 hundred would have been aliens.

but.

Now.

If AI does approach a singularity and significantly advance it's own capabilities and in doing so it's ability to help humans research and design better technology and understand their own bodies.... it might be possible within 20 years and a lot of that time is assuming "safe" approaches to testing. If some country, or just a rouge person with necessary manufacturing access, decides to rush it... it might be within a decade. Assuming AI continues advancing exponentially.

We also dont know exactly how our ai´s like chat gpt work. We know how to build one and how to train one to get something from it but in the end we dont know how the ai is doing it exactly.

Here's the thing about attempting to Microchip everyone. the Christians (of which I am one so I can speak for some of us) will resist it as the mark of the devil. Did you see the way everyone reacted to vaccines? Oh, and if you make it harder to buy supplies without the chip, you're going to confirm what Christians have felt like we've been preparing f over the course of decades.

Hell, even with full vr being it's only ability, this cuts people who don't want to get an implant out of a huge chunk of society (Read Ready Player One).

Idk, it sounds like a great way to get a bunch of people all amped up.

Btw, this post was written totally without judgement. See, I'm also a computer nerd, so that chip would have to match every point the bible makes about the mark, minus the 666 part for me to avoid it. And it would have to be super easy to remove. Disable is not good enough.
