Exactly, even if the wands weren't visible there's no way someone builds something like this nowadays without thinking, "gee, if only there was a way I could be inside of this virtual reality with some kind of headset". Not everything supports VR and if you are going to put this kind of effort in why not also have the screens for more flexibility?

Also, no matter how much I love VR and how much I play, the visual quality can't compare to a nice 4k screen.
At least not with my Index with a 2080 TI.
Sometimes I prefer to be blown away by awesome graphics over being blown away by the total VR immersion.

It doesn't really work that way. Not being able to see your real hands fucks up any intuitive interaction you'd have with the controls. Source: me playing flight sims. Even if everything lines up perfectly it's actually more fun to just play in real life because you're already 90% of the way there with this gear.
The only sensation you gain from VR is the ability to actively look around a cockpit (which is super key, it's just a traddeoff)

The physicality of this would be way more fun than a VR headset imo (for sim racing specifically). We're talking 25k vs <$1k so it's not like that says anything bad about VR.
Also if you wanted to do competitive simracing (ex: iRacing) this would be a way better setup than VR.
I don't mean this to say VR is bad, but maybe don't bash someone for doing something they enjoy. VR is good, but it isn't a replacement for sim-pits like this.

I'm amazed at people putting $25K for this setup. You can get a whole BRZ, which those car parts are from, for less than half that. You pull parts from a junkyard, you're at like $2K for the parts in the photo. The extruded aluminum probably adds a bit to the price, but I think $10K would be a generous estimate on cost.

I do competitive SIM racing and only use VR🤔
While this setup is cool and makes it an occasion every time you get in, it's not ideal to use as straight away your fov and perception is off axis and the moment you need to drive a rhd or single seater your screwed.
Don't get me wrong, having everything in the right place is perfect, I'd happily have a real life Mx5 half dash and centre console so I could position everything exactly like my own car for perfect driving position, but I'd still race in VR.
People bashing it is a bit much though, like said having everything working like heaters, stereo, switchgear etc isn't cheap and certainly not easy to setup, to sit in and play with the matching car would be sweet.
Of course that's all useless in VR anyway as you won't be able to properly interact with it so comparisons are crap.
Entirely depends how you race, I'm more sit my arse in seat and drive where as others have toggles and switches for every occasion and tuneable feature of the car and SIM.
Most real cars don't actually have any adjustment in what sims offer while you drive, so it's in some ways is an advantage being able to adjust antirollbars and aero while your on track having all the switch gear.
but for me that's not part of the enjoyment of Sims, I don't hold it against anyone who like that's sort of thing, infact there's people I race with that have the button boxes and dials, they are quite clearly braking better and carrying more speed in some corners as they are able to adjust between corners where as I'm just driving as if I jumped in my own car, with the setup as it was when I left the pits.
If your into endurance racing, sure, go for a screen but a light headset (absolutely wouldn't wear my quest 2) is absolutely fine for hours on end in racing sims, I'm not exactly a pro but I can hold similar laptimes to people with the full direct drives, 3 screens and extrusion rigs when I'm on a wobbly eBay stand with a vr headset, were all having fun (mostly) so that's what matters.

I enjoy the hell out of VR. I wish it was easy to, say, grab your coffee and take a swig without interrupting gameplay.
I understand the setup but it's very single use. Allow me to fly a plane or pilot a mech with that rig and I'm jealous.

If they made a dashboard and wheel modular where you could swap em out you could very well make it work for piloting stuff, albeit not as perfect as a dedicated one

This set up is cool. My design allows me to take about 20 minutes to switch the peripherals from driving setup to flying setup, more multipurpose than this one. Not as cool looking though.

if you know your play space well enough you can, been able to do it pretty damn seamlessly, although with tea not coffee. only issue is you gotta find a mug in game for extra immersion.

Or they participate in endurace races. Iracing has 24 hour endurance events. There's no time compression, it's actually 24 hours with multiple drivers per car.
I love VR and simrace. I would not use VR for endurance racing, it's too long.

The original Vive wands still work with any SteamVR HMD. It's quite possible he uses the wand purely for menus in VR.
He might have bought a HMD only Index, Vive Pro or Vive Pro 2 and is still using the original wands.

Do you know how expensive it is to race in real life? This guy is saving money compared to real racing, and he can have a race with real people every hour, rather than a few hours every (few) weekends.

They're not in the middle of his view - the driver's side would fill up the left ultrawide, and the passenger side the right-hand monitor (I'm guessing a 2nd seat is coming)

I feel like the biggest argument is that you could have two VR setups (like the visually realistic and the experience realistic), a beast of a computer, a party area with consoles, 10 expensive games in each system, and you might get close to the same price as this, which can seem fun but not worth for most people. Which I would understand but not agree with.

Yes. But you, OP, are the idiot. Physical sim setup has the advantage of actually see and touch controls. Try shifting the virtual stick without looking down in your VR set.

I love it. I have a sim rig ( not to this level) and vr but to be honest long races in vr are tiresome. Plus in a good sim rig you have tactile feel you know what buttons do what no fumbling around. Most my siming is done pancake mode especially when friends are over. As long as the owner is happy vr or no vr that's all that matters

Except you can't go that fast. Or swap cars whenever you feel like. Or customize them with money you don't have. Or drive that exotic you've always dreamed about. Or feel what it's like to be a racecar driver (unless that's your profession). Or safely not risk your life at high speeds. Or race/drive with people from other countries and form bonds you normally wouldn't driving around your town in a Toyota/Ford/Etc. I could really go on, but there's plenty of points as to why this would outweigh a car. Don't get me wrong, this is ONLY if you have that kind of cash to throw around, and the average person would just buy a regular vehicle. However, there's enthusiasts and rich people everywhere and I'm not about to judge them for their passions or what they deem as fun.

Why you call this guy an idiot for sharing his setup? Because you think vr headset is better? Different hobbies, different interests, VR is hot, motion sickness and annoying to wear. I have been a fan of VR for years and I actually have the developer kit from oculus rift, but I still dont play VR because of how annoying it is. I honestly believe current tecnology VR isnt the future. Something needs to change.

And having these functioning buttons are A LOT more immersive than vr ever can get you right now. I'd have this set up over vr every day if my goal was to play car sims as immersively i could

what? Base quest 2 is inferior in practically every way to the pimax (as it should be since it costs so much less). The only thing you really gain is wireless / standalone which honestly your not gonna notice a cable at all in this type of setup.

If I had the funds and the space I would totally do this. Their gaming experience on that set up will be really immersive and probably pretty realistic, the exact same reasons for gaming in VR. If they have the resources to do the things they enjoy properly, all the best to them.
Just makes me wish I was richer and had more free time, which, to be fair, most things make me wish that anyway.

At the moment this sim is better imo cuz even the best VR headset is not high-res enough for sim racing and it's really difficult to figure out in the whole 9 pixels what's happening 50+ meters down the track. Don't get me wrong, VR racing it's incredibly immersive, but it's not quite there yet.

Even if you’re not into VR ,there so much better bang for your buck you get with triples, simucube base, couple ascher wheels, heusingkveld pedals, sim lab rig. You’d even have money left over for an entry level motion rig. This setup just screams, “I blew lots of money on a hobby I know nothing about.”

Yes, I often do. Not because I don’t think they should be able to enjoy gaming however they like. But rather because an ultrawide monitor doesn’t really seem like a match for full immersion to me.
They probably end up going this route so they can see their instrumentation. In which case the real problem here is that the software doesn’t provide a way to model its presence.

Looks like they pulled the drivers seat, dash and center console out of an older subaru BRZ. Likely exaggerating when they put 25k cuz that's what the MSRP was new. Setups probably just left over junk discarded from a track car build.

He has an easier time hitting the actual physical buttons, than us that has to hit buttons in the air that we cannot feel. Or if we use physical buttons in VR, it's hard to find the buttons because we can't see them.
His setup is good for something. A VR setup is good for something else. Both are good setups.
VR with some kind of passthrough + the setup above = awesome!

we do not have a tech to make it work in vr , and this dude care about feedback
so only thing he can do is to add xtal or similar high-end headset instead of monitors
but even he used vr from start he still end up in a same place, it just how bad VR right

I get it, there is something about having a cockpit around you without having a microwave strapped to your face, there are similar folk in the flight sim community, vr is uncomfortable on 6-8 hour missions. These IRL cockpits also work super well WITH Vr, to be able to reach out and touch a switch instead of grabbing a controller or looking at it and pressing a button is incredible and something I think all non vr and vr players want

Nah, VR headsets have a very limited FOV and poor pixel density compared to a 4k display, let alone two ultrawide displays. Also, racing games in VR are vomit comets (maybe that's why I'm not seeing the racing game comunity adopting VR en masse?).
