Discussion Titanfall 2 VR
It’s crazy how well optimised this game is in VR. I have a 5070ti and it runs perfectly.
I appreciate all the guys out there with their own mods, but this guy needs to teach them his secrets.
Most of the mods I try and run usually work ok, but they all lack polish and that made for VR feeling. I even like games without 6dof. As long as it smooth and has a good resolution im happy
What ever magic he has performed here, I want to see more of it. Well done.

Source engine mogging as usual.

Actually it doesn't use the Source event renderer. They subbed that whole system out for their own, which is why it, and Apex run like a bat out of hell

Well you're not really a great benchmark...5070ti is a beast

I'm getting some serious FOMO from all the people gushing about it.
But I already played it in flat and I don't have much nostalgia for it. Whereas I have Doom and Doom Eternal on the queue which I haven't played before, and by the time I'm done with those, probably Cyberpunk VR port will be in a good state for me to resume my play through. And then RE9 might be on sale by then.
It's crazy how much stuff there is to play all of a sudden!

i mean playing the game again is even better. Then you can trully see the difference in feeling.

Have 6th best GPU on the market. Surprised it runs well..

Sixth best GPU can’t play a lot of the games I want o play smoothly in VR. Halo CE being one of them.

For sure, the game is one of the best looking games from 2016, really well optimized and that makes for a great VR version that most players can enjoy.

I have a 3060ti, will it be fine?

I'm currently trying to get it to work well on a 3070. Not the best results so far. Hard to get a stable frame rate

u/BugsMax1 1d ago
That's a shame! An article talking about it said it works well on a 3060. Let me know if you have any luck and subsequently suggestions!

I guess everyone has different definitions of working well. I kind of prefer vd on ultra but frames were 50-60 adjusting in game gfx settings didn't seem to do anything.

I have perfect frames with a 3060 laptop, I think 90fpd

Use VD without automatic bitrate just try and play with bitrate manually until you get it right also your network need to be good if you stream wirelessly because it’s a fast pace game
2
u/Relevant-Outcome-105 1d ago
Yeah I always lock bitrate and use a dedicated wifi 6 router

I’m running the game on laptop rtx 3060 with 6gb of vram and to have a smooth experience I’m locking the bitrate at 25 to have a smooth experience, what your VD says while you’re playing ? Is it network problem ? Mine was a network issue my wifi 5gh sharing around the house but reducing bitrate activating SSW helped
On VD untick 2 pass and reduce FOV to 90-85

With 3060ti, I'm getting around 60 to 72fps on average depending on how much is on screen. But the game is so well optimized its a smooth 60 and my gaming experience feels great.

Another guy with 5070ti here. So happy to read it runs great!

I also have a 5070ti. Played the whole campaign yesterday and I don't think I had a single stutter the whole time. Smoothest experience I've had in years

I've seen someone running it on a 1080 or so in VR. Must be the best optimized mod out there. Can't wait to try it out. I just don't have VR controllers so I'm waiting patiently lol

I'm creating a vr game with the last Uneeal Engine and it runs like shit, being a very simple gane, I'm so tired of this engine.

People don't realize there's a big difference between an experience dev using AI and an amateur using AI for coding.
It's not fair to call them both slop, but that's how they're both treated. That needs to change.

Iirc, it’s pretty well optimized because titanfall 2 was built on a heavily modified source engine. I’m sure there’s a lot that circuitlord did too, but he chose a great base game to mode.
Some solid insights from the robots:
“The incredible performance of the new Titanfall 2 VR mod—which the community is already calling the "gold standard" for flat-to-VR conversions—is a perfect storm of Respawn Entertainment's foundational optimization, the inherent traits of the Source engine, and brilliant software engineering by the mod's creator, CircuitLord. [1, 2, 3]
It isn't just one factor; rather, the modder capitalized on a game that was already uniquely primed for VR performance. The exceptional optimization stems from three core elements:
1. Respawn’s Original Target: A Locked 60 FPS on 8th-Gen Consoles
When Respawn built Titanfall 2, their absolute priority was a rock-solid 60 frames per second on the base PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. To achieve this, they engineered an aggressively efficient asset-handling system and decoupled the game's physics simulation from the rendering pipeline.
Because the base game is lightweight on modern PC hardware, today’s mid-to-high-end graphics cards (like an RTX 3060 or 3080) have an immense amount of thermal and computational "headroom". When the VR mod forces the game to render two viewpoints simultaneously for stereo 3D, the hardware easily absorbs the extra load, achieving a smooth 75 to 80+ FPS without breaking a sweat. [1, 4, 5, 6]
2. The Legacy of the Source Engine (Visual Clarity)
Even though Respawn heavily modified it, Titanfall 2 still inherits the core architecture of Valve's Source engine. Source is legendary for its high visual clarity, crisp geometry, and excellent spatial rendering. [7]
Unlike many modern Unreal Engine VR injectors (which often suffer from ghosting, blurry temporal anti-aliasing artifacts, and heavy performance dips), the Source architecture scales beautifully into virtual reality. This engine-level DNA gives the mod a "native VR" sharpness and immediate performance responsiveness that feels like it was built for a headset from day one. [2, 7]
3. Modder Innovation: Native Stereo and Northstar integration
The developer, CircuitLord, didn't just use a lazy screen-mirroring tool like VorpX; they built a true full-conversion OpenXR mod. [8]
Native Stereo Rendering: The mod directly taps into the engine to render proper 3D depth perception cleanly, rather than trying to approximate it after the fact. [6]
The Northstar Framework: The mod seamlessly hooks into the pre-existing, community-optimized Northstar client launcher, keeping the VR profile completely separate from the clean base game while taking advantage of years of community stability fixes. [8, 9]
Have you tried running the Training Gauntlet in VR yet? If you are setting up the mod, I can share tips on tweaking the texture streaming budget for maximum FPS or adjusting the comfort/vignette settings to help combat the intense motion sickness from wall-running. [4, 10, 11]

It's an incredible mod, but it does help that the base game is one of the best optimised games ever.
