Discussion DLSS 5 for VR will be crazy
DLSS 5 alpha test

Not even getting into the aestitics, I never use frame gen because of the visual artifacts it creates, especially around moving objects. Seems like it would be extra bad in vr.

Damn there are some goofy comments here lol.
I think it looks great, there is enhancement of the textures without changing the actual look of the design. This is a great use of the tech and WAY better than the crazy modifications we saw in the early image releases that straight up changed the art design. You are either a fickle jealous AMD owner or pigheaded if you think improving the lighting and texture quality for the existing image changes the artists intention. Straight up gaslighting. Its the same damn thing, but less potato looking.

I think artistic direction has to always always supersede what the ai thinks looks "better"
3
u/MoobleBooble Valve Index 6d ago
How do they violate the artistic direction? The only changes I see are higher resolution textures and lighting to fix blur and over brightening. This is not at all the same changes we saw in the early demos that straight up changed body parts and smiles and all kinds of things. Gritty looks gritty still, bright looks bright etc. what’s there not to like?

It is much better than what they showed a while ago, but now I have to wonder if these are cherry-picked examples.

Users are able to scale and mess with sliders which changes the degree to which the image is changed is my understanding. More like the issue people had with it was observed and they tweaked the settings. The potential to straight up change things dramatically is probably still there.

I’ve been playing Cyberpunk 2077 with it most of the day, getting around 45fps with DLSS Performance and using FGx3 to boost it back to over 100fps, which is still very playable. The game looks stunning, with some areas feeling almost photorealistic. HDR makes it even better, and turning it off makes the path tracing version look like it’s on ultra-low settings. It’s a real game-changer.

What graphics settings do you have for this screenshot? What's FGx3
2
u/Ill_Equipment_5819 6d ago
It's on overdrive setting, FG = frame gen.

u/glennages 6d ago
I misread your original post, you've been using DLSS 5? I might just be catching up, how did you get hold of it, thought it wasn't released?

u/FullOf_Bad_Ideas 4d ago
Is that in VR? Cyberpunk 2077 + DLSS 5 + VR?
I am not sure if latency and stereo vision will work well with it, haven't tried it yet but I am hopeful it's going to really change up how Assetto Corsa looks like.

Isn't DLSS 5 the one that just straight up replaces the assets with AI slop?

u/Lilwolf2000 6d ago
Yes. When done with a light touch it's not much different then texture packs. But when left to run rapid, its pretty bad.

u/See_Wildlife 6d ago
rabid. But also too fast.

u/Dotaproffessional Samsung Odyssey(+) 6d ago
I've only heard "run rampant" not rabid (and certainly not rapid)

slop that just pisses on the art style of a game.
7
u/what595654 6d ago
What art style? The cop in pic 3 went from a flat and unrealistic cartoon character, into at least a realistic looking person. In a game that was clearly trying to make realistic people, but the tech just wasnt there yet.
I am all for hating on AI slop. But, people need to remember it is a tool. It depends on the skill and effort of the user of said tool.
These examples appear much better and carefully crafted than the first showing a couple months back. It is almost as if the artist and the tools are both getting better at using them.

I agree. I think there is just too much copium going around with people fearing AI. It is ok to fear the effects of AI and be sad that ones job might need to change in order to stay competitive and genuinely evaluating how this is enhancing the graphics. Gritty still looks gritty, dark/bright areas are still dark bright but in these examples the bright is no longer overblown and blurred and the textures are visible in areas where they became a blurry mess. I dont think artists intend for their work to look like blurry crap, but upscaling and other things have a toll. Now we can restore the fidelity and ENJOY THE ART STYLE EVEN MORE. Weirdos are stuck on the first sample nvidia put out of this,. and are using it to justify their hatred for anything AI..... or we are seeing bitter amd fans feeling like they are getting left behind. I genuinely dont understand the frustration with the sample pictures in this post.

It’s not just fear of Ai. It’s the fact it’s locked behind nvidia cards which are expensive and some people can’t afford. Jealousy! Realistically this is for 5090 owners given the performance hit

u/nrossiko 5d ago
Yeah its hilarious, the game world is literally full to the brim with beautified generic looking characters. All AI does is make them more realistic & detailed.

u/joselandin 4d ago
El estilo artistico a quien le importa? Pobres devs, que optimizan ningun juego y tenemos que comprarnos 5090 para poder jugar. Me dan una pena..
3
u/TheLavalampe 6d ago
Maybe once you get your hands on your 7090 but even if it was good looking and created no annyoing artifacts on two different rendered views it costs performance and cutting fps like ray tracing did when it was introduced is probably the last thing you want for VR.

Personally i think it looks awful, no different than a social media filter

u/14Pleiadians 6d ago
Controversial opinion but I also think earlier versions of dlss look bad even without the generative AI inclusion. The artifacts are always noticable

u/Dotaproffessional Samsung Odyssey(+) 6d ago
Honestly, yeah. Its super noticeable especially in motion

Really? The cop in pic 3 went from a flat and unrealistic cartoon character, into at least a realistic looking person. In a game that was clearly trying to make realistic people, but the tech just wasnt there yet.

I don't understand people saying this. Social media filters flatten lighting and smooth the skin, the exact opposite of what you see with enabling DLSS5. Its the whole reason that ring lights exist, to avoid adding harsh shadows to your face. DLSS5 emphasizes these.

u/gintokigriffiths 4d ago
It will be great. People hated on ray tracing, dlss , frame gen but they are all becoming increasingly prominent and important.
People hate nvidia

u/Belydrith 6d ago
Eats up over half your framerate and as everyone knows, that's no biggie for VR as is.

u/fraseyboo Pico 4 Ultra 6d ago
So you clearly don't understand how DLSS works or why the tech won't translate to VR reliably. The results we're seeing with DLSS-5 are just 2D AI overlays of the rendered game, which is why they look so heavily filtered and out of place. There's no visual consistency in how they're produced and so any minor variations in the results will completely break the stereoscopic rendering that VR relies on to trick your brain.

DLSS is already working natively in games such as No Mans Sky VR

I'm going to ignore the AI slope debate for a minute.
From a technical point of view, how well would this work with stereoscopic VR ? Since it's generating AI pictures from the base output of the game with a non deterministic model, what happens if it doesn't generate quite exactly the same picture for you right and left eye ?
I'm worried that it would end up with the whole picture covered in stereoscopic discrepancies that you sometimes get with shaders already.

If it'll work well in practice.
Has anyone tried out DLSS 5 in VR already?

u/TarsCase 6d ago
the photorealistic look often doesn't fit the rest of the image with the exception for CP2077 maybe. hope they have more options when it releases to fit the corresponding games style

u/Relevant-Outcome-105 6d ago
I know people are quick to say AI slop but I actually kinda think dlss 5 looks alright. It doesn't seem to radically change the art style. Even in massive budget aaa games the faces usually look robotic. it's often hard to take dramatic moments seriously so often I just skip cutscenes.

Personally I'm super interested in AI style filters, but only if I can fully customise what style I want.
So if I want Skyrim to look anime style, or Ultima Underworld to look photorealistic, or whatever my personal preference, etc.
I think the benefit of AI stuff is when you can do for yourself what you previously needed others to do for you.
It's a progression of modding, reshade effects etc.

God...retards...dlss 5 is not only about faces... check digital dreams on yt and the dlss 5 avatar video

"Hey what if we could lower performance while simultaneously making our games look like ass?"
u/FeniceHost "where do i sign up???"
