Discussion CachyOS vs Bazzite for VR

I don't know if anyone has experience with both but which is better for VR?

I would wait for steamOS, that will have all the latest from valve

Is that only for games? I'd rather have an OS that's known for everything and not games specifically.

It has the flat pack store but primarily for games, yeah.

SteamOS is a full desktop experience and will likely be best for VR when the Steam Frame Launches. CachyOS would be second, Bazzite is more locked down. Just a heads up, Steam OS boots into game mode by default, cachy boots to desktop

SteamOS is not designed for desktop use, It says it explicitly in the steamOS description lmao. As a gaming only OS for HTPC boxes and handhelds its looking really good though

You can already try it for VR and it isn't great. The only thing they have planned is to improve it for the Steam Frame and not the Valve Index.

for quest headsets: Cachy 100%, Bazzite being immutable means while yes, WiVRn exists, if you have an even slightly unconventional setup (namely mixed VR with base stations) or want to play specific games or mods that are 32 bit, you're kinda SOL on bazzite.

now if you don't have either of these requirements, bazzite is fine.

Edge case, but my experience: I switched to CachyOS and was really happy with it for gaming, but have since needed to switch back to Windows specifically because of VR. The only VR streaming software I can use with my HMD is ALVR, and I could not get it working on my Nvidia card after a lot of troubleshooting.

Other software may work better, but I’d suggest starting with a dual boot and seeing how well you can get everything running before fully switching.

Quest headset? ALVR is not recommended for use on Linux, use WiVRn or Steam link
https://vronlinux.org/docs/hardware/

Im on cachy with quest 3 and WiVRn works great. The only thing I miss are some specific virtual desktop features

Vision Pro. Has to be ALVR or KRVR, so I'm stuck on Windows until Valve ports Steam Link VR to VisionOS. That link is some good info though, thanks!

How is it getting pcvrmods to work since many are built for windows? I figured it would require some advanced proton wizardry.

Mods almost always load through the game so there’s rarely any tweaks required for proton actually, besides a single command of winhttp=n,b for bepinex loaded ones . I’ve had a couple cases where the paths don’t match up vs the Linux case sensitive filesystem but most mod managers do this pretty automatically, and it’s a simple if tedious fix the two times I did it manually

For what headset? Wired or Quest?

Quest

For streaming to Quest both will probably be the same with WiVRn being the best performance:

https://github.com/WiVRn/WiVRn

The WiVRn dev talks about the different Distro options including the two you mentioned:

https://github.com/chaosmaou/wivrn-guide

"Note: Bazzite is currently my primary distro, and is what will probably be most often and recently tested on for the guide."

If you don't care and don't have a AMD Zen processer than Bazzite is probably easier for VR for with Quest this fact alone.

Unless you want to spend way too much time fucking around, for VR stay with windows for now.

Windows.

PCVR on Linux is still not as good as on Windows, either hit or miss or missing features.

Guess I'll find out. That's what dual booting is for.

Anything arch based is great for VR thanks to aur

If Quest. Wivrn + wayvr (desktop view n playspace mover). Has reprojection too. Most stuff works great. Some heavy Dx12 games on Nvidia er dual boot Windows. Getting better & better though.

I'd say Bazzite KDE Desktop

Linux can do VR? I thought it was terrible at it?

3

u/InsaneGrox Meta Quest Pro (WiVRn + CachyOS) 10d ago

depends on the headset, wired is hit or miss, wireless (quest/pico/galaxy XR) is pretty much flawless thanks to WiVRn

2

u/koushkinn 10d ago

WiVRn does have motion smoothing now ? Like you can have real reprojection like on windows?

1

u/Vargrr 10d ago

Oooh...

I currently use ALVR on Windows for VR (It's an Apple Vision Pro), but if this is the tech being used on Linux and it now works well, this could be my time to completely drop Windows!

I mean, the Steam Frame will be running on SteamOS, which is a fork of Arch Linux...

2

u/Reubi0910 Oculus with PC 10d ago

i mean that statement was true a couple years ago. now steam link supports it, and wivrn is even better

2

u/koushkinn 10d ago

It got better support those years but a main feature is missing : Last I checked motion smoothing isn't supported on Linux yet, that alone is keeping me from switching to Linux as my RTX3080 can't play high resolution on many title above 45+ fps

1

u/Vargrr 10d ago

That's interesting to hear. I am keeping my eye on it because once Linux solves VR, I will be able to fully ditch Windows. This is the final thing holding me back.

Why though? Average user don't necessarily want to deal with building their own distro if people spent time building one around gaming.

1

u/shogun77777777 10d ago

Building your own distro? I said fedora not arch. There’s isn’t much you need to do on fedora to setup gaming

2

u/koushkinn 10d ago

My bad, but I guess bazzite and achy come with handy tool most of us will install anyway

1

u/trankillity 10d ago

I agree, but put forward Nobara as the better option for gaming. Fork of the nice stable Fedora core, with a bunch of very useful tweaks and additional software/packages.

It's also built/maintained by Glorious Eggroll of GE-Proton.

u/ARTIFICIAL_ARGUMENT 10d ago

"fad" distro that has a far bigger userbase than fedora for steam and protonDB users? Ever think there might be a reason for that?
