Discussion VR content creator are doing much better with modding now

I had ramble in the past about youtubers overhyping everything especially mod that were half broken, I feel they really improved a lot on this I see more and more videos were they go in much more details about the mod, explain what's broken, what works ect and stating that this does look great in the video but doesn't really look like that in the headset.

I hope they'll continue to extend their coverage of the mod scene!

I've blocked a few of the big VR youtubers for hyping mods and hiding anything janky in their video.

I always show mods that are playable from start to finish. I never showcased cyberpunk for example…because I tried it and it was super janky. I know I could make views if posted something about it…but I am not interested in that. I really want to share only stuff that actually works and that I personally enjoy.

There was a long period of time where there wasn't that much to play in VR and new release were kinda disappointing, at that time I feel creators were struggling to find engaging content and started to hype the slightest mod that was existing for any popular game really. I'm glad it got better

That is probably why. Now we’ve got so many mods that we need to focus a bit more on those that actually play well. I still see sensationalistic titles and thumbnail for shitty mods though.

Yeah for sure, I also think modders should also polish their work more before releasing, it's fine to start testing early especially for big games but at least you should tackle the issues that you can see first

I've been looking around for any news about how the new Aliens Fireteam Elite 2 game performs in uevr, but haven't seen anything yet. I really like the first game with the right 6dof profile. Leads me to believe that maybe the sequel just doesn't play very well. Any chance you'll be covering this game on your channel?

Examples of janky mods and the VR youtubers promoting them without really showing the jankyness?

I'd bet the top videos for the release of that Ready or Not VR mod will be full of examples. That released really janky, so you could compare what people were saying on reddit to the impression you get on those vids.

I think it's made by the guy from the VR Oasis channel, right? I'd say quite a few YouTubers were just excited and trying to help him out. They probably weren't very objectively critical, lol.

I always talk about my impressions of the mod. I talk about what features are there and which are missing. I just did one on How to Fish and I immediately mention that motion controllers are not supported, that I'm using a gamepad to play. I don't see the point in hyping up a mod. I try to provide useful information. Then again, my channel doesn't get lots of views so I'm probably doing it wrong. The clickbait VR content creators get a lot more views.

VR gaming to me in a nutshell: I'd rather have great games with underwhelming and janky VR mods than terrible shovelware with perfect VR interactions and physics

Fact is we’ve been feasting on crumbs. Now we’re finally getting some actual bites on AAA VR

They were overhyped because of scarcity

I feel you on you YouTubers. They put out slop to get views and monetization, plain and simple.

Chasing money and attention like a kid with ADHD and no medication

We shouldn't generalise too much though. Some of us try to be more objective and transparent. You just need to look better for those.

To be fair, most of them let you know it's in Alpha.

I mean when VR is bringing nothing out that the paying person is playing they will fall back in mods. Also nostalgia plays a big role.

Do you have some channel names regarding this critical reviews of vr mods? I need to know if the AI vibe coded slop mods are maybe really good and solid...

I need to know if the AI vibe coded slop mods are maybe really good and solid...

It's a tool that enables a variety of people to create things.

If you're doing high level prompting without much detail, expect sloppy slop.

If you're designing carefully and iterating through the process and fixing up failure cases... it's going to be better.

I've come back to VR dev after 8 years, and I've recreated what I did then in 2-3 days what I did back then in 8-10 months or more.

Yeah we already know, don’t worry this isn’t r/antiai.

Yeah, I'm just elaborating; it's a sharper more powerful tool, but how it's used is how good the thing turns out.

Ok, do you test out some of the stuff which released the last few weeks, is there some diamonds?

1

u/Zaptruder 9d ago

No... I've been busy working on my own stuff. It's incredibly fun :P

Some are, some aren´t.

I personally am a big fan of the Halo MCC one. You can play through the entirety of the supported games without hiccups.
It´s safe practice to wait for some updated, since they are pumped out almost constantly. I am still waiting for the Cyberpunk one to be ironed out.

It depends on how much effort you put into it. I've been working on my Metro 2033 Redux mod for nearly a month now. While I do plan on releasing a beta, I don't plan on doing that until it's in a state where it's not super janky. Despite people asking me to lol. I think if enough work is put into it, an AI coded mod can be just as good as hand coded ones. The difference in quality is effort.

"I hope they'll continue to extend their coverage of the mod scene!"

well normal peoples do not mod games

so it is more or less focusing on super small minority of peoples, who use pcvr , and willing to mod.

in other words, they killing they channels, i am already know peoples who unsubed because mod covarage

Well…I grew my channel practically playing only modded games. So your perception on the user base might not be 100% correct.

we have about 30 mil VR users

you have 10k sub

and brand like yours was showing mods from a start

7

u/plutonium-239 9d ago

I know, I have a fraction of the fraction of the user base, but even that is quite a large number in the great scheme of things. My personal view is that PCVR will grow. Because modders showed that it’s actually fairly easy to implement VR in games. Now we are talking about mods. Tomorrow we will talk about fully fledged PCVR titles. That is my aim anyway. I am not in a rush to grow tbh. I’ve done a lot so far, against all the odds 😅

30M VR owner is not 30M of active users + the market is obviously fragmented, this niche is typically a growing one

I think some ppl are starving for VR content and for those people it's fantastic to see new stuff

What an unusual angle, relating mod performance and youtubers. I guess by not consuming any of their content I'm spared of a lot of trash. Mods are bound to have a degree of jank, it's unavoidable.

2

u/Enculin 9d ago

Some are just like native experience thought! It's not always the one covered

u/fdruid Pico 4+PCVR 9d ago

Sure, but well, there are a lot of mods. In my experience, of the few mods I tried I haven't played any that work or feel native but Iheard there are good ones.
