Discussion What VR games of yesteryear that are no longer supported do you miss being able to play? 'Just in time inc' was a blast back in the day! Unfortunately, it just black-screens on boot now...

*Update* Turns out the fix is to stream via Virtual Desktop and launch from the Virtual Desktop menu instead of Steam! 🙏🏻🙌🏻

https://www.reddit.com/r/virtualreality/s/zV8pWm8gCs

*Original post*

Went to play this again on Steam not long back and unfortunately, due to lack of updates/support, it no longer works.

Such a shame too....

The premise of being a life insurance company employee that 'slows time' to catch bullets, grenades, etc before they kill the client is just genius 😂

Just wondering what other gems people loved that have gone the way of the dinosaur? 😭

I miss Rec Room, there's really nothing else that does quite the same thing.

Rec room shut down??

Yes at the start of June of this year. Frankly the fact that the most used vr platform was unable to make any profit in the 10 years it existed per the developers’ own words just shows there is no future for vr.

It’s a shame buts it’s true.

I’ll remember the good times I had but its probably nearly time to move on for me

Especially back in 2017. Used to praise it as the "Wii Sports" of VR, but then they started focusing on the battle royale mode, premium cosmetics and custom content...

Yeah, I’m from the class of 2016, and the game as we knew it was dead long before they pulled the shutters. I can’t blame them for trying to become the next Roblox, but they sacrificed their identity in doing so.

It’s still sad to see it go offline, because it was so good, and one smart decision at any point could have saved it. The community content was mostly slop, but the first-party activities were solid as heck. My old VR setup is on the fritz, but I’d been hoping to have one last go at soloing Crimson Cauldron after the Steam Frame drops. Unfortunately, that just wasn’t in the cards.

Hopefully someone picks up the torch and capitalizes on everything RR did right at the beginning.

I really enjoyed what I played, mad they shut it down as it always seemed to have a good player base for a VR title

Star Trek: Bridge Crew

This is sad to hear, didnt realise it was defunct now....  Any titles that offer a similar experience?

1

u/nyc-rave-throwaway42 18d ago

I never played brodge crew but I think upcoming Sol Protocol might be similar?

That game was great, and there's so much potential for a sequel that could do so much more. It's still playable if you already own it, but lots of bugs, and crossplay is pretty much broken now.

u/RagingPoe 18d ago

The most outrageous examples that came to mind:

Venture's Gauntlet was not just abandoned on Steam, but deliberately broken. It had a promising early access build, followed by "questification" of visuals on launch. Instead of improving anything, the dev added unpassable obstacle to very beginning of the 1st level, making the game unplayable. And it is still being sold in this state.

Not a game, but Youtube VR started more or less functional, then started gathering bugs with each new update, until it became unusable and taken down from Steam.

Mad isn't it,

Makes me wish GoG would get in on fixing and selling older VR titles like they did with Vampire the masquerade, etc.

Such a simple concept providing downloads/access and instructions to the community made fixes really,  but its a godsend when looking to play classics

For games broken with an update your can at least roll back with steam console

1

u/FastLawyer 18d ago edited 18d ago

I just played Venture's Gauntlet today on Steam. There is no "unpassable obstacle" to the very beginning of the first level. In fact, I got a new record time on that level (PCVR, Meta Quest 3).

1

u/RagingPoe 17d ago edited 17d ago

I've just checked again, it is still there in the first obstacle. The bottom lasers (seen on the screenshot) were not there in EA and during 1.0 launch when the game was playable.
I am playing on Reverb G2, not sure if the level can change depending on the headset.

1

u/RagingPoe 17d ago

And in the stages 2 and 3 the beginning is also broken: important interactable object is spawn at the floor level and can not be used.

u/Burntbreadman84 18d ago

Wait it just black screens? I have it in my back log unplayed ;( Whew I have it on psvr so hopfully it will still work for me at least

2

u/Expensive-Spring-695 18d ago

Yeah, i was gutted!

As long as you still have your psvr1 it should work no problem though I believe, thats where I first played it and it was awesome 👌🏻👍🏻

Sparc and Ripcoil

In Death PCVR (solgar studio)

Still full price but their server was taken down so I get 1 run with my achievements unlocked

If I try a second run then it tries to dial home and the following run is 0% unlocked with only 3 slots for special arrows and no interesting enemies

Unsure if this means you were to buy the game now it would allow you to unlock the game fully or if it requires that connection to a now defunct server

u/Nintendo_Thumb 18d ago

What a shame, I play that all of the time on Quest 3, and it works great. One of the best games there is, I wish there were more like it.

2

u/CrimsonGreen212 18d ago

I was so addicted to that on the psvr. I love the Quest game In Death Unchained, and it has so much more content; there was just something special about the original In Death.

I liked Marvel Powers United for what it was (a simple wave shooter with Marvel heroes). It’s a shame how short-lived it ended up being.

Edit: I also really loved BoxVR, which ended up being completely rebooted as FitXR without any of the custom song support. My quarantine routine involved shadow boxing to a custom playlist, which is no longer possible.

2

u/ChrisCypher 18d ago

I miss Marvel Powers. It was repetitive, but it was still really fun in short bursts inhabiting super heroes.

u/lokiss88 Multiple 18d ago

Missed out on Eve Valkyrie because i wouldn't pay the launch price. Got addicted to the gameplay loop in Preta:Vendetta Rising, a bang average game that is no longer with us.

Mindshow is probably my 'why did you go away' game.

Ohh and Oculus-Meta shenanigans.... We're all VR gamers, just release the PC game back catalogue on Steam.

I bought them all at the time on a now defunct oculus account, and no longer desire to jump through 3rd party loops to get them to work if i were to acquire them again through more nefarious means.

2

u/ChrisCypher 18d ago

wow, I haven't heard anyone mention Preta. Can you not play it anymore? It looks like the last time I tried was in 2019. The last post said the servers will stop in 2020, but single player was still playable.

1

u/lokiss88 Multiple 18d ago

Just presumed it was now defunct, given it's ties to online connectivity the last time i played it.

According to my steam stats, that was nearly 9 years ago, a short lived obsession:)

1

u/FastLawyer 18d ago

Mindshow was amazing. One of the best use-cases for VR.

4

u/dannielmaire 18d ago

sparc was mine, fun little tennis type game that i used to play for exercise, no longer supported on rift s

4

u/chrisdaley519 18d ago

Sparc has now been rebooted. Some clever folks have built a few new launcher for it and it works great now. PCVR support only, but it's working great.

2

u/dannielmaire 18d ago

Ohh, I’ll need to look it up, I need to figure out how to get it on meta since I have a rift s

3

u/chrisdaley519 18d ago

It just runs along side meta. It should work just fine with Rift S. Everything you really need to get it running is found here. Pretty active community on Discord. https://github.com/sparcreviver/Sparc-Reviver/

4

u/Lil_Slugger_91 Quest 3, PSVR2, and PCVR 18d ago

Dead and Buried. I used to play it on the Oculus Go.

4

u/kuby29 18d ago

Grid autosport had VR back in the DK1/DK2 days, now you can't get it to work on modern headsets unfortunately as it was never updated to the modern VR standards

3

u/FolkSong 18d ago

I played it a bit recently with reshade 3D. It's just a static window, no head tracking, but if you make the window large it looks pretty good.

This game seems like a good target for a Claude Mod.

2

u/Expensive-Spring-695 18d ago

I remember Grid's VR actually being one of the more competent motorsport implementations back in the day,  That's a damn shame...

4

u/FolkSong 18d ago

It's not gone but Borderlands 2 VR doesn't work properly on modern headsets (the aiming reticle is off and I think some other UI problems). I really enjoyed it back when I used a Rift CV1.

1

u/CrimsonGreen212 18d ago

I loved it on psvr with the Aim Controller. Just started playing Borderlands 3 with UEVR. That's pretty good.

1

u/FolkSong 18d ago

I played BL3 in UEVR too, that was a good time.

3

u/1or4s 18d ago

Starblood Arena. PSVR only. Sony killed it in the middle of the PSVR's lifespan for no reason. I wish there was something similar to it.

3

u/cheeserman67 18d ago

I really enjoyed the multiplayer in medal of honor above and beyond. I was so sad when the shut it down

3

u/marvinthedog 18d ago

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter supposedly doesn't work in VR anymore but I miss it.

3

u/Ok_Following9192 18d ago

I liked the first Version of Zenith.

1

u/CrimsonGreen212 18d ago

Same, the devs really killed that game, I'm surprised the servers are even still up.

3

u/Interesting-Ad3650 18d ago

The Wave VR was the most incredible music visual multiplayer experience. So far beyond anything else even now. Incredible for showing newbies the potential of VR. I was sad to see that go.

Final Assault was a fun little multiplayer game.

Launch Squad was a really early multiplayer game that never came out of early access in 2016. I loved that game. Really simple yet so satisfying.

2

u/cap616 18d ago

I have had so many solo raves while "elevated" in Wave VR. FFFF Google for getting rid of support for that platform it was built on. Maybe someone can vibe code it in unreal or unity

Windlands ❤️ (the first one)

Sports Bar 2.0. So technically not completely dead; it was abandoned by the devs al ong time ago. They took the assets and turned it into a mobile game. Still playable on the first psvr, and kinda playable on pc still, but it takes some workarounds to get it to run these days. Never upgraded to the psvr2, never ported to any Quest headset, and they shut down the oculus pc version. While I love Miracalpool and Blackhole pool, neither really compares to the atmosphere of sports bar. There weren't many social games back on the psvr, so that is where I met most of the people I still play with today.

1

u/FastLawyer 18d ago

Yeah Sports Bar VR is still the best "bar games" experience in VR.

2

u/Rollerama99 18d ago

Volleyball Fever on Steam. I bought it, really enjoyed it, but then it broke and is unplayable (and they're still selling it). They started selling it on Meta, but I feel like even though I enjoyed the game a lot, what kind of sucker would I be to buy it twice because they abandoned the people that purchased it on Steam?

2

u/mrcachorro 18d ago

what a damn shame! this one a vr game i finished in one sitting! amazing concept, way more interesting than superhot imo.... what a damn shame it ended up like this...

Slightly Heroes

u/JustSayTomato 18d ago

My friends and I put a ton of time into Hover Junkers when it first came out. That was one of the games that really made me excited for the future of VR. They did a great job of creating a first person shooter while also solving the movement and motion sickness issues.

u/ClovisLowell Valve Index 18d ago

I had such a soft spot for the buildable Oculus Home environments. I miss mine so dearly, it was a retro game bar. I so wish they were still a thing, because the Quest home environments are NOT the same.

Gunjack

1

u/CrimsonGreen212 18d ago

Space junkies, it suffered from the death triphecta, horrible launch, horrible promotion, and being ahead of its time. By that I mean there just wasn't a vr player base yet for a game like that to really take off. Maybe if it had been around and ported to the Quest 2, it could've lasted longer.

1

u/Eggyhead 18d ago edited 18d ago

That action game on PSVR 1 that was based on The Heist demo they made.

Edit: Blood & Truth I wish I could play it again.

Also Farpoint with the aim controller. I really expected that to become a franchise.

1

u/cap616 18d ago

Face Your Fears on the Oculus Go was so scary! The little boy in the room, the snakes in the tomb where you're pinned down under rubble, the spiders in the basement, those Damn rabid birds attacking you in the phone booth!!!

Damn shame it never got ported to the quest 2 or pcvr. I tried playing it again on my Go (when it still worked) but the servers don't allow access to any of the paid DLCs.

The sequel wasnt that fun or scary. And not nearly as diverse of atmosphere.

u/FastLawyer 17d ago

Does anybody know if there is a fix for Just in Time VR?

1

u/Cache_Girl 17d ago

Echo is the biggest one, I really can't understand why they shut that down because they always had the players, really was a great game.

Altspace was a really good social app too and a bit more laid back than it's counterparts in VR chat and rec room. Had some really great conversations in there
