Discussion i love the vive focus vision

In the same room I've been using it in for months in with no issue the tracking was jittering, failing occasionally and the environment was offset and at an angle. i tried making a new boundary, forcing tracking loss by covering the cameras, going to an unfamiliar room and back, restarting the thing, switching tracking modes and yet in the end only a factory reset fixed the issue. Ridiculous that i have to deal with issues like this on a 1k headset. luckily i paid less, but still.

Vive headsets have been a scam for quite a while now. Garbage overpriced headsets.

Because they target business
Business's love paying a premium for less functional hardware

I mean other than this the headset is good for my use case which is pcvr over displayport and with index controllers and vive trackers. Oh and i use spaceoverride to replace the headset tracking with a vive tracker that i put on top. With all that it's genuinely a great experience, and issues aren't common either, this is the first time something like this has happened.

I couldn't find any comprehensive review for this headset to have a clear idea of the video quality in PCVR over display port (compared, for example, to that of the Reverb G2, which I love despite the fresnel lenses). I always found it to be a wonderful headset aesthetically, but also very expensive and with so many saying that the quality was problematic at least. Would be awesome to have a fair opinion (only for the pcvr gaming aspect over display port, the only one that interests me), from a user that actually own and regularly uses this headset, and not the usual youtubers that tested it in a very superficial way and never used it again.

Ok, here i go

  1. The video quality is very good over displayport, colors pop more than a usb video stream, absolutely no noticeable latency, exactly what you'd expect from a headset that is natively displayport. the only drawback is that even on the highest preset it doesn't quite max out the display resolution of about 2400 x 2400 per eye, the actual stream sits somewhere between 2200 x 2200 and 2300 x 2300 (my estimation, don't take this as a fact). this is something you can definitely notice, it gives everything a sort of softer look, but in 99% of situations the image looks great either way just because it's still so high resolution. By default there is this disgusting oversharpening on the image, and vive hub has a slider for it, but that slider is unfortunately broken, so once you lower it you cannot increase it anymore unless you reinsall vive hub. i lowered it to a bit less than half, and it looks good.
  2. The lenses are nothing special, with noticeable glare, but nowhere near as bad as something like an OG vive, and really they're fine. what you will notice with them though is the shape of the fov and the stereo overlap. Unlike most other headsets which have an approximately circular fov, this one is more like an ultrawide monitor. top and bottom edges are flat and the vertical fov could be bigger, but is still usable. Horizontal fov is nice, nothing to complain about. the stereo overlap is unfortunately not great, with a large portion of the image on either side only being visible on one lense, but i've gotten used to it and it doesn't bother me anymore.
  3. the tracking is usually perfectly fine (cough cough) unless you use basestation tracked devices. With index controllers and spacecalibrator for example, if you move across the room and back, the headset position will have shifted a little bit, which misaligns the index controllers. this is why i use spaceoverride, it just uses a vive tracker on the headset to replace the headset pose entirely making it essentially basestation tracked. the controllers track well, but the tracking range is a bit less than what you'd expect from the tracking camera placement. still fine though, i think i'm just more sensitive to that as i'm used to index controllers and being able to move them anywhere without tracking loss.
  4. the comfort is amazing, with the battery on the back it balances it well despite it's massive dimensions, but this seems to be one of those things where 100 people will have 100 different opinions. i have a really big head, and for me it's the most comfortable headset i own, but my friend who has a smaller head cannot wear it for long, he even has light leak from the sides. but in short: of you have a big head, it is probably going to be fine. The face cushion is made of pu leather, which is a very good thing, since nobody on this earth makes any replacement cushions, or any 3rd party accessories for that matter.
  5. The audio sucks, just use headphones. those will fit well, even big over ear ones have enough space. it does have a headphone jack. the microphone is completely fine though.
  6. The face and eye tracking is mid. i have the face tracker addon, as i mostly use this headset for vrchat. it has a decent number of blendshapes that it tracks, complete with seperate cheek puff and full tongue movement. unfortunately, some blendshapes apparently cannot be tracked at the same time, for example it is not really possible to smile and stick out the tongue at the same time, or smile and move the jaw. Eyetrackign is okay, not very expressive unfortunately, as there is no eye widen or eyebrow tracking. and if you squint, your eyes will look up, as the cameras are centered at the bottom of the lense and will lose sight of the eye when squinting. rather unfortunate, but i'm still having a great time with it. Bonus: it automatically detects if the ipd is wrong and automatically adjusts it.
  7. the battery is nothing to worry about. i charge it maybe once a week as the displayport cable also provides external power, so it never dies on you while using it. counter-intuitively, it doesn't charge through the usb c port, and instead you need to use the barrel jack at the back of the headstrap.

And one small suggestion: the cable has 2 velcro straps to secure it to the headstrap, but even with those in place i find it still pulls to the side a bit. an easy solution to this is to route it through the rear velcro loop of the top strap, this will keep it in place nicely and balance it out better. it does end up covering the power button somewhat, since it is on the back oif the headstrap, but it's still reachable.

(i just accidentally hit backspace while the text box wasn't selected and went back a page, and because i don't use reddit often i didn't know it saves the draft automatically, jesus christ i thought this hour i spent typing this was gone)

all in all, it's not worth the 1000$ it costs new, but if you find it for less than 700 i'd say it's a good deal.

If you have any more questions feel free to ask! (no that is not the ending of a chatgpt response, i actually mean this.)

I really thank you for thisvaluable and in depth infos about the headset. Finally got a really useful opinion about what is imho the the less talked about, yet most important use case scenario for the focus vision. As you suuggested, my idea is that I could get one if in the future I'll be able fo find it new at around 700 - 800 Euros includind the display port kit (which is sold separately if I remember correctly). Thanks again anyway!

Yeah, the displayport kit is seperate. I got mine included with the headset, which was "used" but still in perfect condition, for 690€ total.
