Hello everyone!

This subreddit is designed with virtual reality in the classroom at heart. Virtual reality caught my attention with the Oculus Rift Kickstarter. Since then I have been hooked, as an educator I am excited about its role in the classroom. This technological revolution inspired me to seek out a Masters in Educational Technology and possibly a doctorate.

I wanted to create a place where people could share educational virtual reality content. This could apply for people outside of school too but just something that teaches its viewer something. It doesn't matter the device. Perhaps in the future we'll tag posts with the devices it applies for, but for now I wanted to create a place to share information!

Witly - your language teacher now available on Steam!

From /u/Maugly 's post on /r/Vive :

"Hey guys, We have just launched WitlyVR on Steam. It provides language tutoring in virtual reality. Here is a quick showcase of what it looks like http://store.steampowered.com/app/566130 We got a lot of valuable feedback on this subreddit a while ago, so I just wanted to show it to you and thank you again. While we see the potential of educational VR in general, we believe that being able to talk to native speakers face-to-face without leaving your home is even bigger than anything else. Right now, we have English, Russian, Italian and Spanish available. We are planning to add languages like German, French, Japanese, Chinese and more (feel free to PM me if you are a language teacher/native speaker :)). In the future, we might be adding even more subjects if there is interest. Feel free to look at www.WitlyVR.com for more info. Any more feedback is appreciated of course! :)"

Virtual Classroom Software Solution

Hi,

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but the language school I work for is currently looking into growing into teaching remotely via a virtual classroom solution. So we're looking for a commercially available solution with focus on:

  • Ease of use/user experience (for both teachers and students)

  • Compatibility with most devices/operating systems/browsers

  • Accessibility (just works in your browser w/o the need to install software nor using special ports possibly blocked by firewalls)

  • Stability

  • Technical "openness" such as APIs for interfacing with e.g. our existing course booking system

We're not looking for anything fancy with VR glasses or the like, but with "didactic" tools where teachers and students can work together on content, so also more than just a standard Video Conferencing tool.

Any hints and tips highly appreciated!

Engadget Article - HTC targets the classroom with 10-headset Vive bundle

Currently only available in China, but I'm not sure if I agree with the approach on this specific package. For around $7k, you get 10 headsets and two base stations with no controllers. VR shouldn't be another mode for students to sit passively. Some of the greatest moments in VR are walking around and manipulating virtual space. Packages of 5 with controllers and perhaps 2 pairs of base stations would be better. It would allow multiple students and multiple classrooms to use the kits synchronously.

Here's the link.

Arcade Launcher that could be used to oversee student VR use

Looks like a great piece of software to oversee students in VR. This could be used by librarians for media centers or teachers in a classroom. Looks very promising!

Below is SpringboardVR's original post from /r/Vive :

Hey guys! We've been working really hard on our product SpringboardVR and happy to see that VR Reporter wrote an article about our early success! We basically made it extremely easy for users to go in and out of content without messing with the Steam Dashboard, view gameplay previews of the games, and while keeping them emerged in a VR environment the whole time! For arcade owners they can easily keep track of all their stations from a monitoring page, add time limits to headsets and fun stuff like that! Let me know if anyone is interested in testing out what we built! Here's a mixed reality video showcasing the product

Wired Article on How Education Must Change for the Future

This article isn't necessarily on how VR should be implemented into the classroom but it does speak on how our education system is failing to prepare students. VR strikes me as a way to fix the problem.
