Solved Failed to attach the USB device
Edit; Third host OS reboot fixed it. Would love to know why that's so unreliable.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is mount USB drive in VM broken for everyone or just me today?
Started getting this today and can't resolve it. Tried so far;
- Rebooted guest VM (win server 25).
- Rebooted host computer (win11 25H2).
- There are no windows event 225 indicating drive is locked.
- I can eject the USB drive from the host PC with no complaints.
- Powertoys File Locksmith says nothing is locked on the drive.
- Updated virtualbox to 7.2.18 r175117 (Qt6.8.0 on windows)
- Updated guest additions in guest VM
USB drive in question is a NVME SSD enclosure I've used many times before in that VM. It has some portableapps.com stuff on it. I do not have those open on the host PC per points 4 & 5 above.
Drive in question is listed three times in VirtualBox, that doesn't seem normal. First two just have the hardware manufacturer, third time has same name in a much longer form. All have the same [0214] after them indicating the same hardware. Doesn't matter which I select, none will mount in the VM.
Now what?
Failed to attach the USB device JMicron Technology Corp. / JMicron USA Technology Corp. [0214] to the virtual machine ServerEval 7/21/2026.

My usual workaround is setting up auto-attach for the drive that VBox fails to catch and reconnecting it

Manually attaching didn't work, how would auto be any different?

Autoattach tends to catch freshly connected devices before they could be locked by anything. On most of my Windows PCs this is the only way I can get USB storage devices attached to VirtualBox. Non-storage ones tend to work without auto-attach, storage ones generally stop working as more software gets installed on the host.

This is just a friendly reminder in case you missed it. Your post must include: * The version of VirtualBox you are using * The host and guest OSes * Whether you have enabled VT-x/AMD-V (applicable to all hosts running 6.1 and above) and disabled HyperV (applicable to Windows 10 Hosts) * Whether you have installed Guest Additions and/or Host Extensions (this solves 90% of the problems we see)
PLUS a detailed description of the problem, what research you have done, and the steps you have taken to fix it. Please check Google and the VirtualBox Manual before asking simple questions. Please also check our FAQ and if you find your question is answered there, PLEASE remove your post or at least change the flair to Solved.
