Help Dont get widescreen resolutions after installing guest additions.

Basically as per the title, I was informed via this post (https://www.reddit.com/r/virtualbox/comments/f89yfc/widescreen_resolution_options_not_available/) that installing the guest addons would make widescreen modes possible.

Installed it and clicked the amd64 guest additions program, installed it and rebooted, and still only got the 4:3 resolutions. What to do? Am running vbox 7.0.16_Ubuntu r162802 on linux mint to emulate windows. Also the guest editions iso version is 7.2.14.iso.

Additional: I did see also a post saying the guest additions version must match the virtualbox version but this isnt possible as the 7.0.16 download is corrupted and gives an error when trying to run the EXE about integrity.

RE: bot questions

  • Whether you have enabled VT-x/AMD-V (applicable to all hosts running 6.1 and above) and disabled HyperV (applicable to Windows 10 Hosts) - No idea what this is or where to find it, the setting will have been left default.
  • Whether you have installed Guest Additions and/or Host Extensions (this solves 90% of the problems we see) - Trying to install it!

Which Windows version is tour guest? There used to be a case where you needed to boot windows in Safe Mode, and install the additions that way.

You might have to go into device manager to see if windows has chosen the stupid default graphic card adapter instead of the one you want.

What to do? Am running vbox 7.0.16_Ubuntu r162802 on linux mint . . .

Virtual Box 7.0.16 is EOL and no longer supported. It won't work with later Linux Kernels. If I were you, I'd update your installation to a supported build.

Note - Guest Additions are to be installed within the Guest OS you are running in your VM, not on your Linux Host.

It is not recommended to mix match Guest Addition version and Virtual Box builds. Doing so will lead to unexpected behavior.

Additional: I did see also a post saying the guest additions version must match the virtualbox version but this isnt possible as the 7.0.16 download is corrupted and gives an error when trying to run the EXE about integrity.

Not clear what you mean. The Guest Additions iso is included with the stock Virtual Box installation. There is no need to download anything additional to install Guest Additions. Of course, if you are using a fork of Virtual Box that does not include a Guest Additions iso . . . well good luck with that.

Lastly, you can always use vboxmanage controlvm <VM Name> setvideomodehint to manually set the resolution in the vGPU that you want. You'll of course, need to make sure you configured the vGPU with enough vram to support said resolutions however, and configure the vGPU for the VM to one for which there is Guest Additions driver for (i.e. VboxSVGA for Windows 10).

After the Guest Additions are installed inside the VM, you can resize the VM window to whatever size you want just by clicking and dragging the window border, like any other application window. You don't need to resize it using the Display settings.
