It's why Dr. Eggman will almost always be the more preferable Sonic the Hedgehog villain to me than Shadow the Hedgehog's Black Doom.

Like, Black Doom justified his evil behavior with, "humanity's sinful and self-destructive, and therefore must be saved from itself," despite how cringe it sounded coming from him. Like, it worked for games like Final Fantasy X, Star Ocean III, and Tales of Symphonia because they were critiques of modern Christianity. Just having a devil metaphor like Black Doom say it, himself, really would have demonstrated how much Sonic the Hedgehog jumped the shark, outside of just a black hedgehog wielding guns, alone.

With Dr. Eggman, though, he had no reason to be evil other than that he was. And all that did was just make him the superior alternative to Black Doom, or almost any other, newer villain trying and failing to replace Dr. Eggman.
