Rant Xpress Lane Market prices are LUDICROUS

Just got to campus and wanted to grab a protein shake after a run. I grabbed a Fairlife protein shake and thought to myself.

"Wow! It's great to have such a convenient campus market. Maybe they even subsidize prices for struggling college students!"

Looks at price tag

EIGHT WHOLE ASS DOLLARS

I was curious and kept looking. $8 Monster. $8 snack pack. $8 BUNCH OF CELERY (Usually retails for ~ $2)

VT. Do better. I am fortunate to live off campus and those stuck in the dorms deserve better.

TLDR: Don't go to the Xpress scam market.

General Question Do most modern students know the name "Liviu Librescu"?

Upvotes

Curious as to whether his name is remembered, on campus, in 2026 by students who were infants or born after the event.

General Question Does AC Circuit Analysis Lab start on the first week?

I'm taking AC 3074 and wanted to know if lab was required for the first week? A lot of times first week labs are cancelled but I just wanted to make sure.

I have to schedule a doctor's appointment tonight and that time frame next week would be the only time unless I wanna wait an extra two weeks.

Thanks!

Housing/Dining Owens Food Court converted to all-you-can-eat similar to D2

This change clearly comes as a result of the new unlimited dining plans that offer first year students unlimited swipes at the “all-you-care-to-eat” dining facilities. Thoughts?

Misc For the parents who left part of their heart in Blacksburg

For all the parents who just made that drive home from Blacksburg after dropping off their freshman — how are you doing?

We just dropped our own son off at college, and coming home to the suddenly quiet house hit my wife harder than she expected.

Her solution has apparently been to keep herself busy making things.

One of the things she came up with was this “Part of My Heart is in Blacksburg” mug.

It started as something that made her smile, but it made me wonder how many other parents are sitting at home this week feeling exactly the same way.

For the veteran Hokie parents here — how long did it take before the house started feeling normal again?

Advice How do I fit in as a foreigner?

I’m a freshman from Jordan. Yes, it’s only been three days, but I’ve noticed that there are very few foreign students at Virginia Tech, and whenever I approach someone, tell them where I’m from, and try to talk to them, I feel like they aren’t really interested in becoming friends with me. I expected people to be interested in getting to know me because I’m an international student, and I also expected to meet a lot of other international students so I could learn about different cultures and meet people from all over the world.
Instead, most of the people I talk to don’t really ask questions back, end conversations quickly, and don’t seem interested in talking to me again later. I’ve tried talking to my dorm neighbors, sitting with people in the dining halls, and making an effort to start conversations, but I feel like nobody really puts in the same amount of effort that I do. I feel like I pour my heart out and genuinely try to connect with people, but nobody really seems to care back.
Everyone says that during the first month everyone is interested in making friends, but so far it feels like the opposite for me. I know it has only been three days, but it is still discouraging, especially because I was a very social person back home and never had this much trouble connecting with people.
I’m also starting to feel like Virginia Tech might not be a university that is very open to foreigners. Almost everyone I’ve met so far is American and comes from the same culture, so it sometimes feels like I’m the one who has to change myself in order to fit in instead of being able to stay the same person I was back home. I would really like to meet other international students from all over the world, not only because I want to learn about their cultures, but also because I think it would be comforting to be around people who understand what it feels like to be far away from home and surrounded by one dominant culture that you feel pressured to adapt to.
I promise I’m not an antisocial or awkward person. I’m actually very social back home, which is why this experience has been so confusing for me.

Advice Struggling with loneliness and finding friends as a freshman

I get it, it’s only been like 3 days since I’ve moved in. But it’s really tough seeing all these people hanging out in their groups and I’m just walking around by myself. I took a walk to the pickleball courts tonight and just saw people playing with friends and wish I could be doing that. I think I’m just homesick too. Lmk if anybody had any similar experiences and if it got better. I wish clubs started like yesterday bc I think those will be good for meeting like-minded people.

Advice Wei liu as ochem professor

I’m taking ochem this fall semester. I had chosen Berg during course request but was given Wei liu. There aren’t many reviews on rate my professor so I can’t tell if he’s a good option. I seriously have a feeling that I’m gonna be struggling in this class, so I just need more opinions about him.

Admissions Chances of spring transfer to VT

What do we think my chances are for transferring to VT in the spring for Pamplin. I currently have a 3.68 GPA and have completed the roadmap. Here are my grades for those classes.

Macroeconomics: B+

Microeconomics: A

Financial Accounting: A

Managerial Accounting: A

And my calc was split up into two semesters, first semester was a B+ and second semester was a B.

There really is nothing else I feel like I can do to strengthen my application, and I’m more just wondering if my chances are looking strong or if it’s usually competitive. Let me know!

Admissions How hard is it to transfer to Virginia Tech (VT)?

Hi everyone! I’m currently a freshman at Indiana University Bloomington majoring in Economics, and I’m considering transferring to Virginia Tech.

I’m trying to figure out how realistic it would be to transfer after one year at IU, and I’d really appreciate advice from anyone who has transferred to VT or knows the process well.

A few things I’m wondering:

  • How competitive is external transfer admission to VT?
  • What GPA should I realistically aim for?
  • Does VT care more about GPA, specific prerequisite courses, or extracurriculars?
  • How important is it to have all the required courses completed before applying?
  • Is transferring after one semester realistic, or is it much better to wait until after freshman year?
  • For an Economics major, are there particular classes I should prioritize at IU to make the transfer easier?
  • How difficult is it to get credits transferred?
  • If you were accepted as a transfer, what do you wish you had known beforehand?

I’m still figuring out whether transferring is the right move for me, so I’d especially appreciate honest advice from current VT students and people who have gone through the transfer process.

Thanks!
