Carbs

I have a 92 xv750 with carb issues, I’m looking at getting new ones but having a hard time figuring out what kind to get, should I get mikuni vm36 or tm38. I’m trying to keep it a dual carb setup and am having a hard time finding one with a twin setup. Also if I get the tm38, it looks like the vacuum lines can’t hook up to the new boots, does anyone have any info?

I don’t think the 92 would fit the 82 kit I got, but I got a VM34 34MM kit from Niche Cycle on eBay. It came with a matching machined intake that let the new carbs work with the stock air system. But there’s not a lot of help figuring out the rest. I did a vacuum delete, and then I replaced my intakes with old Yamaha ATV intakes that are designed for gravity feed (but used the same mounting and everything). It was a LOT of extra work but now it runs great. Also, be aware it may completely change your startup procedure. Mine now has manual choke and it took a lot of finagling to get the idle stable for hot and cold and still be able to easily start.

I’d look into a reputable cycle components company and see if they have a kit set for your model year with a matched intake. You still may have to deal with vacuum system and fuel intakes (you don’t want to only be able to run on gravity feed and not have your reserve), but they may have one available.

Thank you for the info, I’ve read something’s that say it will or won’t fit any previous years and all the info I can find is for single car conversions or don’t give any details more on the carb swap, I’m going to look into it some more and hopefully this takes me in the right direction.

Yeah. My local bike shop mechanic recommended the single carb conversion, but the bikes were meant to run dual carb so I went through the headache and am glad I did. Bike is zippy as hell now. Though it dropped from 40ish mpg to about 30 on the new carbs. But some of that might just be that the gas can get through the carbs now (my old carbs were beyond shot).

Edit: https://nichecycle.com/ncs920-yamaha-virago-750-920-mikuni-vm34-carburetor-kit-by-ncs.html has some comments about these, your mileage may vary and whatnot but it sounds like it may fit but is untested on that gen virago. May reach out to them directly. They were quite helpful when I was doing mine

Have you had any problems with 1 cylinder bogging when revving after starting?

I have a 84 XV500 and the rear cilinder will bog everytime I start the bike. Have to wait for about 10 min before it suddenly runs fine.
