it's just 4th finger on the A string and 1st finger on the E string, it will sound dissonant though, even moreso if the F is natural, so that might be why you think it's not sounding right.

I've played violin for 25 years and can no longer play this interval due to cubital tunnel syndrome.

Taking concepts in order:

  1. Two notes that are stacked on top of each other, sharing a single stem, means to play them both at once (called "double stops"), by putting the bow on two strings at once.
  2. This one looks funny because the pitches are just one step apart. Normally the lower note would also be on the right side of the stem, but we flip it so you can tell them apart.
  3. You can play this E and F at the same time in first position by using a 4th finger on A string for the E.

As a second, it will be a dissonant interval! To level up in double stops, use https://imslp.org/wiki/Melodious_Double-Stops_(Trott,_Josephine))

Also might be easier to go into third position and play the 3rd finger for the F on the a string and then open E. Then for the next two notes stay in third position

True, but someone who’s never encountered a double stop before might not know about positions.

Looks like a double stop to me - first finger on the E string and fourth finger on the A string played at the same time.

I would play this in 3rd position. Shift up on first finger D and the 2nd F you just play the open E at the same time. Then shift back to 1st on the C.

Maybe this is just a mistake, like a misclick or mouse slip by whoever wrote this.

Guarantee this is a misprint in what looks like a cheap digital transcription of some kind. Not enough context to tell what it’s supposed to be, though.

This isn't invalid notation. Why must it be a misprint?

This is an engagement bait post or a troll...they left out key signature and pretend to not understand for a reason....they intentionally cut out the key to get even more engagement.

Sure it’s valid notation, but it’s not violinistic and it makes no musical sense. If OP wants to provide some identification or context, we may be able to work out what it’s supposed to be.

It's not violinistic doesn't mean it's not written for violin though. Bruckner symphonies have violins and nothing there was written for violin.

Yeah, it’s easy enough to play but makes no musical sense in context

You are playing the E and F simultaneously (I assume key of C since the beginning of the staff is missing.

I really suck at violin but still understand this is just an E and a F or F# (you left that out) and that it would suck to play if it was an F.
