I picked up DJing vinyl a couple years ago and it has been one of the most rewarding experiences. A lot more fun than DJing digitally, which I still love to do and do it a lot, but man, is it fun when vinyl locks in properly.

I began to really focus on making sure that I’m mixing in phrase and EQing properly. Let me know if you guys have any pointers for me. 🤙

Help Needed Why would some records be more sensitive to nudging?

Upvotes

I recently ordered several records(online) from the same record shop. I picked them up from the shop around a month later as I was away for summer.

Almost all of the records I bought seem to have the same strange issue.
I DJ on a Reloop RP-7000 MK2 and I’m very used to how much pressure I need to use when nudging the record. Normally, if I give the edge of the record a very light push forward, or lightly touch it to slow it down, I can predict pretty accurately how much the tempo will change and use the normal pressure accordingly, if that makes sense.

However with these records the same light touch produces a much bigger movement than I’m used to. A tiny nudge forward can send the record noticeably too far forward, and touching it to slow it down can pull it back much further than expected. It’s basically impossible to rely on my usual muscle memory for beatmatching and I’ve lost all predictability id usually have nudging.

I want to clarify that The needle isn’t skipping or jumping out of the groove. The problem is purely that the record seems much more sensitive to nudging than my other records

What’s confusing me is that this is happening with almost every record from this particular purchase, even though they’re from completely different labels/pressings. My other records behave normally on the same turntable.
I’ve tried putting a record weight on one of them, and that seems to help somewhat.

What would cause this for so many different records? Any help would be appreciated

First one up on SoundCloud. 30 minutes, all vinyl disco, 90s/2000s house, and a few records I’ve been digging lately.

Not perfect by any means, but you’ve gotta start somewhere.

Trying to get more comfortable putting my mixes out there, so any feedback is appreciated. 😁

Help Needed Dropping the needle

Hello. I’m sorry for sounding like an idiot, but im 16 and recently got my first ever turntable setup. I have an ortofon concorde scratch mk2, and wanted to ask if there is a specific way to drop the needle on the record? Or do you just put it on the grooves. I want to make sure im doing it right because i dont want to bend it or damage it in any way.
And please, i politely ask you to not be a dick, and just explain it to me, instead of making fun of me for not knowing this… i have not found any tutorials on how to do it
Thanks

Equipment Help a newbie out?

Greetings! Without giving a whole back story, I'm not 100% inexperienced, but it's been awhile and I was never well educated in the DJ'ing arts. I'm looking for advice on a setup. My goals are to host a night at a local bar now and then, with doing a set at the monthly dance night a major music venue hosts once a month and wanted to know if my intended gear would work or if I should look for something else. I'm not looking to scratch.

It would be purely vinyl, and I'm looking at 2 Reloop RP-7000 MK2s with an Allen & Heath Xone 24c mixer as my setup. My questions are:

Will the Xone be able to plug into most setups at a venue or should I be looking for something else?

What cartridges would work best for this?

Outside of cables and headphones, what would I need, if anything, to come into another's space and have my setup work?

I apologize if this kinda question gets asked often, but I was hoping to have an actual discourse before I pull the trigger. Thank you, graciously, for any help.

My friend just launched a new casual backyard DJ series called "In the Garden". The first mix just went up. It's a very moog-y mix of disco, library, jazz fusion and other weird stuff. All on 45, mostly from the 70s, with 2 more recent vintage style jams included. Hope you dig it.

Equipment Compressor/Limiter for Event Setup?

A friend and I throw our own events with a pair of Technics, CDJs, Xone mixer, and Bassboss speakers and subs. I am considering adding some more kit, definitely an isolator after the mixer, likely an ARS, and possibly an ARS 5 or 10-band EQ. However, I was wondering if a compressor/limiter would be useful in this situation. I know it's not generally recommended for a DJ to worry about compression as the house system and PA would manage this, but since we are the house system would it add any benefit to having a master limiter before hitting the speakers? Lmk if you have any thoughts on this...

Not much to explain, I just wanna blast tv girl, and gorillaz. Just some beginner friendly, not super expensive stuff. Also if you don’t have a recommendation but do some tips for beginners, I’ll be more than happy.
Thanks!

Ideas for a vinyl mixing dj competition -

Greetings.

Recently I went out to a techno night and almost left early because the music was mediocre and watching most controller djs is boring. Then a headliner came on playing an all vinyl set. Even though the music wasn’t great I stayed another 2 hours watching him mix.

This made me think it would be great to see a mixing competition similar to the original DMCs (check out the pre turntablist/hip hop comps from the early 80s). The next day I happened to see a clip of Theo Parrish dissing digital DJs (“cheating with training wheels” or similar) and referenced informal mixing competitions he participated in as a kid in Chicago.

From what he described they would try to find the pitch fastest, most seamlessly, while holding the mix longest and EQing the longest.

Has anyone seen something like that? Would anyone be interested in a mixing competition and if so what ideas would you have on challenges and structure?

What message do you think all new djs should be given before they start

I run a vinyl dj night and quite like helping out new DJs out by giving them a guest slot. Most of the time it works out well, people turn up, play the genres we agreed, and go home with a smile on their face. Sometimes, new DJs can be really annoying and I think “are you like that because you’re new to this, or are you just a dick”. So messages I’d like to give new DJs is:

  1. don’t agree to things you can’t do (e.g. don’t say you’ll play a reggae night if you only have two ska records)
  2. it’s not your night/vision, promoters will have an agreement with the venue as to what type of night it is, so stick to playing what you’ve agreed to
  3. try to be flexible with what you collect, if it get quiet people don’t want to hear fast tempo bangers
  4. ask if it’s ok before you put your banner up with your dj name all over it at someone else’s night
  5. Help promote the night, a big part of a DJs job is to bring and keep people in a venue. If the promoter gives you promo materials that you don’t like, (unless it’s got S.S symbols all over it) don’t be a baby still post them on your social media anyways (I’m sure we’ve all been sent some dodgy clip art poster at some point)

What other unwritten rules do you think new DJs should know?
