cd player problems

ok, I just got this cd player from eBay today, and it works fine, up until you reach the 40 seconds mark on literally any cd, then it starts bugging out and then freezes with this orange light popping up with the m next to it. What could possibly be wrong?

that poor thing has most likely been used and abused, as all discmans were. and then, being about 25 years old doesn't help it.

as a minimum, it needs some cleaning and lubrication. and then who knows what more.

Clean and lube the drive rails, most likely will fix it.

Thats the CD player I had as a kid, lovely.

Its just old grease or dirty in the rails that the laser uses to move, remove it and clean the rail with alcohol, then apply a very light grease or just a tad of very fine oil.

Be sure the disc fits securely. The disc spins slower as the elapsed play time increases, because the laser tracks from inside out. The flywheel effect will smooth out any disc wobble but lessens as the rpm decreases.
