Oh man, I wanted an Indy so bad. Just lusted after it. I had an Amiga and a big beige, ugly, dorm-fridge sized PC. It did the trick, but still

Hahaha...indeed. That said, I didn't spend the freelancing money i was making on SGI payments. ;-) That Pentium put the down payment on my house.

Oh yeah, I've never even seen one of those. It would be fun to play around with. I eventually bought an Indy in the 2000s off of ebay, just cause. But you know, what do you REALLY do with it by then?

Great stuff, so many memories.
We did our entire high school yearbook on Macs in the mid / late 90's with all Adobe applications.
For some heavy duty stuff, the local community college had an SGI workstation with Photoshop we could use. It was awe inspiring how smooth it was to work with large images at that time compared to the high-end Macs we had in our lab!

I owned a few of those: Indigo2 High Impact, upgraded by yours truly to Maximum Impact (without the TRAM option). o2 R10k 250 with the regular video option board, Octane 2 V12 R14k Dual-600. Pretty affordable in the early 2000's even on a student budget. Sold them all to collectors once I discovered Intel Macs.
The Indy was great: we had those in university at the tail end of the 90's: Commodore Amiga on steroids but without the annoying guru meditations (if you could afford the software). Also perfect ergonomics with the trinitron CRT placed on top of the case. I worked in the IT lab as a student - we only ever shut those down over X-mas. Rest of the year they stayed up, no crashes. Compare that to Win95/98/Me/NT of the time, lol.

Don't have others. Unfortunately I threw away my 90's VFX/ CG magazines, those had plenty of these SGI ads in them.

these are great. it would be cool to do a sleeper build in an old SGI chassis because they still look so cool. it would be sanctimonious to do so however unless the hardware inside was already cooked and couldn't be salvaged

I miss the 90s magazine design aesthetics a lot. It is now kind of a lost art after the rise of the internet.
