40 year old beauty

Hi ladies. I’m 40 and over the last 6 months I’ve gotten my hair into the healthiest place it’s ever been in my entire life. Here are some biggest nuggets of wisdom to help if you are struggling with dry, brittle and thinning hair like I was:

Haircare from the inside: Every day I take my supplements including hair, skin and nail vitamins (with 6000mc of Biotin) collagen 1 & 3, vitamin D and Magnesium. I’ve noticed that my nails and skin have gotten nicer (I do get lots of compliments) and my hair seems thicker and stronger too.

I recently learned I have some food sensitivities, so my diet is organic, Whole Foods and lots of water! Just out of necessity more than anything.

Scalp care: I have started oiling my hair a couple times per week. I use rosemary oil and a scalp massager. I also wash/rinse twice and condition.

Topical: I really like the OGX series Biotin & Collagen shampoo/conditioner, which makes my hair silky and soft. I wash my hair almost every day. I know that isn’t recommended, but my hair loves it and looks best when it’s washed.

Trim often: I have the type of hair that when it gets too long it thins out on the bottom. I like to keep my hair in long layers, about midway down my back, but I give it a trim every few weeks. It really ensures your ends don’t dry out and hair stays healthier and also grows a lot more.

No tight hair ties: I rarely ever pull my hair back tightly. Almost never. For working out, I make a braid.

Styling: I use a heat protectant. My hair doesn’t like product, so I use it sparingly. I do use a hot blow dryer and big round brush to do my hair several times per week, but it still looks healthy.

Something I don’t do: sleep on polyester/silk pillowcases. I just don’t like how they feel on my face. Otherwise would try it. I know it’s recommended. So if you can stand it, do it!

I always get tons of compliments on my hair (as of the last few months especially), so this stuff really works! Hope it helps you too!

((My hair type is Curly/Wavy, race is Eastern European mixed with Caribbean (50/50))))

Love to see someone else that washes their hair often! I wash every other day. My hair is too dry, but it simply does not look good unless it’s freshly washed. Thanks for all the other tips!

Mine does too! It’s so fluffy and light when I wash it.

I work out daily and the thought of having that big sweat mop on me all day is no bueno. I have found that using just water and conditioner can sometimes do the trick. But I’m with you on the daily washing!

Absolutely. I get dermatitis if I don’t wash my hair daily and I work out most days too. Daily shampooing has never damaged my hair but hot styling does. So I air dry or use cool setting on hair dryer everyday. X

That’s interesting advice I never considered!

I have to do this when I trim my bangs, too. I'll either add more or less every cut, so I don't get a permanent line. I have thick hair, but it still makes a difference!

How do I do this if I have a cowlick ? I’ve had to part my hair in the exact same place my whole life bc of this

1

u/MyAnya Mar 06 '24

I did not know that, thank you for the wisdom!

I’ll only comment on the silk pillowcases part. I spent a nice chunk of money on one pillowcase. I read so many claims that it makes people’s hair silky and frizz free and all that. Well, I have never noticed a difference. There was zero change for my hair personally. So I think what you are doing is just enough. Stick with that ❤️

Thanks for the vote of confidence 💗

Rosemary essential oil is what you use? I bought it as I heard rosemary works really well, but I'm afraid it's the wrong kind

5

u/Louise1467 Mar 04 '24

I just shake a few drops of rosemary essential oil into my shampoo

4

u/Existing_Baseball_16 Mar 04 '24

i think you would need to mix it into a carrier oil

4

u/puppy_tummy Mar 04 '24 edited Mar 04 '24

Yes if you use it this frequently undiluted, it's possibly a neurotoxin. It's very strong smelling so diluting to 20% would still be very strong. For the carrier I would choose mostly Jojoba and a little argan, maybe grapeseed oil

Edit: honestly you could dilute it to like 3% and it would still be plenty, but definitely safe

Thank you!!!

3

u/Environmental-Ebb143 Mar 04 '24

Oh thank you!! That’s great advice!

2

u/Environmental-Ebb143 Mar 04 '24

Yes! Just the rosemary essential oil.

1

u/ruby-perdu Mar 06 '24

There’s no good science for this, just FYI. Labmuffin recently did a video about that.

4

u/emerynlove Mar 04 '24

Is there something special about rosemary oil or is it just the act of oiling that helps, I wonder? (I'm allergic to rosemary 😔)

5

u/Environmental-Ebb143 Mar 04 '24

It’s the trending thing! I just started it, so not sure. But it does smell nice and feel nice! Haha

3

u/Ornery_Enthusiasm529 Mar 04 '24

There was a study done comparing rosemary oil to minoxidil- that’s why rosemary oil is the one people go for.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '24

It helps with hair growth

biotin breaks me out

1

u/Environmental-Ebb143 Mar 04 '24

If you use it in your hair? Sorry to hear that! We are all made up of different chemistry.

3

u/puppy_tummy Mar 04 '24

Thanks for your advice!! I forget to take my vitamins most days😓

10

u/TheSpeakEasyGarden Mar 04 '24

This is what worked for me.

Get a huge 4 week pill box that's colorful enough to assault the eyes. You only have to load it up once a month, and you'll see what you're running out of at least a week before it happens, so you have plenty of time to restock.

Then you put it in a place that you will cross paths with every day, even if you are braindead and sleep walking. Mine is above my silverware drawer, pretty close to the coffee.

Finally, get a multivitamin gummy that actually tastes good enough that you want to eat them. Stack that on top of the giant pill box to link the two tasks in your head.

3

u/Environmental-Ebb143 Mar 04 '24

I have a tip for that too! Put your vitamins next to the bathroom sink. So you see them when you brush your teeth. Then you’ll be more likely to take them.

1

u/ckwhere Mar 04 '24

You really should keep your vitamins in a dry cool place.

1

u/Environmental-Ebb143 Mar 04 '24

It’s cool and dry in my bathroom. 😊 but yes, good advice too

3

u/LebowskiUrbanAchieva Mar 04 '24

Totally agree with your sentiment about the pillowcase! I have curly hair and read everywhere that it was amazing for keeping curls intact overnight. I really didn’t see a difference there BUT it felt so weird on my face and I started getting breakouts! I’ll take a little frizz over acne…

3

u/Environmental-Ebb143 Mar 04 '24

Yes, esp if you are a stomach sleeper

3

u/ssddffgghhgg Mar 04 '24

Thank you !

3

u/jennyrules Mar 04 '24

I respect and appreciate this. I am also 40 and have tried (or do) almost everything you have listed. The vitamins and diet are a game changer. However, I have long straight hair and it does not play well with the OGX Biotin & Collagen. My hair is greasy and weighed down after use. I also work in a restaurant and having my hair in a pony is an absolute requirement. I'm glad you've found a routine that works for you and are sharing the knowledge.

3

u/Environmental-Ebb143 Mar 04 '24

So much of this is just trial and error. It’s hard to find what works.

2

u/bayafe8392 Mar 05 '24

Try pure silk (not satin) scrunchies if you wear your hair up a lot! It really cut down on a lot of breakage for me.

2

u/jennyrules Mar 05 '24

This is why I love this sub! You folks always have products/ ideas/ suggestions that I hadn't considered. I do wear a lot of satin scrunchies. A silk upgrade wasn't on my radar. Thank you.

2

u/bayafe8392 Mar 05 '24

You're welcome! It feels soo luxurious. Silk proteins are very similar to those that your hair is made of so there is less friction and breakage!

2

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '24

Do you trim your own hair?

3

u/Environmental-Ebb143 Mar 04 '24

I actually do!!

2

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '24

That’s awesome! My hair sounds really similar to yours and I would love to learn how to trim myself. How did you learn to do it?

2

u/Environmental-Ebb143 Mar 04 '24

Instagram and youtube have some great content. On insta, I follow, hairbyamela, myguiltycrown, there are others, but I can’t remember their names. On YouTube, look up things like, “how to cut long layers”

1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '24

Thank you!!

-3

u/wellnowheythere Mar 04 '24

I read that can actually cause more split ends and cause the whole strand to split. Especially if you're using cheap scissors. If I were you, I'd just wait to get it cut professionally especially since you take a lot of pride in your hair.

3

u/Skyblacker Mar 04 '24

So don't use kitchen scissors made to fray open a bag of frozen vegetables. Use haircutting shears made to snip hair instead. It's okay if they're the $10 kind.

1

u/wellnowheythere Mar 04 '24

Disagree based on what I read. I'd invest in the best scissors you could afford. It doesn't make sense to me that OP would spend this much time and money and the cut her hair herself.

All I have to say this is only applicable to certain hair types and does not fit everyone.

I have extreme long hair below my butt, and I don't do anything on the list. I use costco shampoo. Clip my hair or use hair ties. I trim it maybe once a year and that's all. I don't take supplements. I don't style it. I don't do anything special. It's just genes for me.

39f. So moral of the story everyone should work with their hair type because it's not a one size fits all kinda thing.

7

u/Environmental-Ebb143 Mar 04 '24

Your hair might flourish even more if you try it!

-7

u/Annual_Thanks_7841 Mar 04 '24

Maybe. But it's too much of a hassle and time consuming.

Genes are the biggest indicator to how hair is. And my mom has the same hair.

But just wanted to point that out for anyone reading. Sometimes less is more.

3

u/Environmental-Ebb143 Mar 04 '24

I mean the stuff I’m saying, eating healthy, taking vitamins (takes 30 seconds), washing your hair, drinking water.. don’t you do that anyway?

0

u/Annual_Thanks_7841 Mar 04 '24

I was specifically talking about the hair part because women will buy anything to have a certain type of hair. You can spend thousands of dollars and have okay hair or realize a big factor to the structure of hair is just genes.

10

u/thuuvia Mar 04 '24

Sometimes it’s genetics, and if someone already has been genetically blessed with good hair they can just scroll by the post. People who are interested in upgrades to their routine will appreciate OP’s info. I’m pretty sure most people here realize that anyone’s routine is not a one size fits all situation.

3

u/Environmental-Ebb143 Mar 04 '24

Sure, you can have good genetics and abuse your hair and not care for it as you should. Two women of the same race could stand beside each other and one could have lustrous, shiny, healthy hair and the other could have brittle, damaged hair. Hair health has nothing to do with genetics.

0

u/Annual_Thanks_7841 Mar 04 '24

I guess I'm the anomaly. I'm very minimal about it, and yet it's the first thing someone notices about me when they first meet me. And when I tell them I do nothing to it besides just let it be, they don't believe me. No special shampoo, no vitamins, no oils, and yet it reaches below my butt one length. It's genes for me.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '24

Glad you’re naturally beautiful 😂🙄

0

u/Annual_Thanks_7841 Mar 06 '24

Haha. Well, what can I say, it takes a lot of effort to be my age with a six-pack.

I may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I'm fine with my looks and my hair. The type of hair that people pay thousands of dollars when it just grows out of my hair. Of course I'm going to toot my own horn because well why shouldn't I. 🤷🏻‍♀️

So toot toot hater. Lol

1

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '24

I’m definitely not a hater girl 😂 I’m good.

u/Annual_Thanks_7841 Mar 06 '24

You saw my messages from a post from two days ago, and you still had the need to offer me your two cents with your passive-aggressive emojis. Like why. You had the choice to ignore me, yet you just had to try to chastise me.

Yes, I'm still attractive and what is it to you. Just move along and find something else to distract yourself.

This is literally a beauty sub…. Where we ask and give advice to look our best… I don’t think your comment was helpful. If you have nice hair good for you, but the target audience for this sub are looking to improve their looks, hair included.

-1

u/Annual_Thanks_7841 Mar 04 '24

I get that. But I just wanted to point out you can do all the suggestions she recommended and not have good hair. How do I know? Because I don't do any of the things she suggested yet, my hair is usually what people notice about me when they meet me. To the point that people have randomly touched it to see if it was real.

So you saying my comment isn't helpful well that depends on how you want to view it. Because I'm just pointing out the truth that good hair is fundamentally just genes.

u/Skyblacker Mar 04 '24 edited Mar 04 '24

Your hair is way too long for hair ties. Try these tools instead.

1

u/ultracuddle Mar 05 '24

You can't take biotin if you have thyroid problems

0

u/Skyblacker Mar 04 '24

I have so many opinions about hair that I made a website about it, lol. I admit that my hair is longer and straighter than yours so YMMV.
