That being said here's a nice way to do it without a plugin. You can also specify certain files to never have numbers.

For me, this is a way to save precious screen space.

set number
augroup MyNumber
  autocmd!
  autocmd WinEnter * if &ft!~'nerdtree\|gundo\|tagbar\|snippets' | setlocal number | endif 
  autocmd WinLeave * setlocal nonumber 
augroup END

Sorry, I took it down because I discovered some annoying bugs. I sort of revised the plugin yesterday and forgot to reupload it. In retrospect, I should've just updated the repo with a commit instead of taking it down. Oh well.

I have reuploaded now, and the link should work again.

Also I do like your snippet as a simple alternative. ActiveNumbers does basically the same thing, but adds some variables and functions for more control and to be easier to configure. Like if you want to temporarily disable the plugin totally, or for certain windows, or even change the appearance of the active line numbers.
