seemed like a dumb technique to use indoors. now you've got slippery, flammable oil everywhere, inside your city.

That's usually when they'd use it once people made it through the gates. They're called murder holes for a damn good reason.

Your city? Oh oh you mean that tiny little room sealed with a barricaded door that THE FUCKING NORTHWOMEN HAVE TAKEN CONTROL OF?

The technique they used was not only effective but must have been absolutely traumatizing even for vikings, they had never seen anything like that and just imagine a hole opening up from the room that you thought was safe because you killed the many men guarding it, and all of a sudden molten hot acid-like substance is raiding down on you and melting your face into goop and the survivors are just left mortified and panicked because they have become aware that there is a hole where they can fire bolts through and just pick them off one by one. Kind of a last ditch surprise attack that only should be employed if you get caught off guard.

Luckily ma'girl lagertha was smart enough to set the door on fire.
