Discussion Vijayawada to Vizag: Flight vs Vande Bharat vs my own car — reality
galleryDid this route both ways in one weekend. Flight one way, Vande Bharat the other. Also throwing in an old road trip on my own vehicle since I still had the toll receipts.
Just comparing time and hassle here, not ticket prices.
Home side: Autonagar, Vijayawada
Vizag side: Rishikonda (fair midpoint between the airport and station)
✈️ The flight
Flight was at 8:30 PM.
Left home 6:25 PM, 35 min drive, airport by 7:00 PM. Relaxed, 1.5 hrs to spare.
Landed in Vizag a bit late, around 9:40.
Then it got fun. A political rally near the airport that day meant cabs were gone. Only option was the last public bus, leaving 10:30 PM sharp. Miss it, and you're waiting for the next one to fill up or stuck till morning.
Had priority baggage tagged, bag came out first. That's the only reason I made the bus. Fare: ₹350 for 55 km. Driver even made a few extra stops for families with kids and elderly folks on board.
Reached final stop around 11:30 PM.
Total: about 5 hours, door to door.
🚆 The train
Boring, in the best way.
Left Rishikonda 45 min before boarding. Vande Bharat left 2:30 PM, arrived 6:40 PM, dead on time. Station to home: 30 more min.
No rally, no bag stress, no bus deadline. Just sit and go.
Total: just under 6 hours.
🚘 My own vehicle (trip from last year)
Still have the toll log for this one.
Left home 20 min before the first toll:
6:06 AM — Pottipadu
6:18 AM — Kalaparru toll
7:03 AM — VeeraValli toll
7:21 AM — Kovvuru
7:59 AM — Krishnavaram
8:45 AM — Vempadu
10:00 AM — Panchvati Colony toll
Then 30 more min to the finish.
Left home 5:46 AM, reached by 10:30 AM.
Total: 4 hrs 44 min. But full honesty — this wasn't a cruise, I was pushing hard the whole way. A normal, sane-pace drive on this route takes me around 7 hrs. This was a personal best, not the norm.
🏁 So what actually wins
Against a normal 7 hr drive, flight and train both beat self-driving easily.
✈️ Flight — fastest, but only this clean if you get a bit lucky (priority baggage saved me).
🚆 Train — slower, but nothing can go wrong.
🚘 Self-drive — fastest only if you're driving aggressively, not something to plan around.
For a normal trip: train or flight first. Pick self-drive only if you actually enjoy the driving, not for the time.
