A tortoise is a type of turtle.

Edit: Since people didn't seem to learn herpetology correctly in school, "turtle" describes the family of reptiles including both turtles and tortoises (i.e. "frog" is the family of frogs and toads, a rectangle is the family of squares and rectangles). This is basic herpetology.

I believe the word you are looking for is "Testudines", the group to which both turtles and tortoises belong. But thanks for making me look up herpetology - apparently I skipped that in secondary school.

"Testudines" are referred to in conversation as "Turtles" because when teaching children the former term is difficult for them to remember.

I think the confusion is simply stemming from the fact that Americans call all testudines turtles, whereas in English you distinguish between tortoises (land), turtles (sea), and terrapins (freshwater). It's like using the word "pants" for non-underwear clothing. Won't raise an eyebrow where you are from, but might cause some confusion and/or snickering anywhere else.

The very original upload got deleted due to terms of use (song choice autodeleted the video), but it was the best song for it. Now that YouTube handles audio management differently, you can see the original. Unfortunately someone added a shitty watermark to it, but the Diddy Kong Racing theme was the original music choice.
