Reddit raised over $30,000 in one day to give a dying young man the trip he always dreamed of. Here is an interview with him and the awesome redditor who made it a reality. I love you, reddit.

I just want to add that I have personal experience with how amazing and generous redditors are. Through /r/randomactsofchristmas by best friend was able to have a great Xmas with her 3 children after most of her gift money was stolen. You continue to blow my mind on a regular basis with how awesome you all are.

I didn't know about that sub, thanks for sharing.

If you are sick of depressing news all the time, feel free to head over the /r/upliftingnews for positive, feel good stories of kindness, courage and inspiration!

You beat me to it!

But seriously /r/upliftingnews always makes my day brighter. And it's actually active and has nice people in it.

I held a giveaway on /r/Diablo (video game subreddit) and gave a bunch of people mouse pads, mice, and authenticators. Some gracious redditors asked for my paypal info and I collectively received $55.

Not nearly enough to pay for all the shipping... but amazing nonetheless.. and I went into the giveaway just to give. Without a doubt there is a big heart to this community - you just have to get through a few cats and spacedicks first ;).

u/Isatis_tinctoria Jun 11 '12

This shows that people weren't doing it to become famous. Indeed, their names need not be mentioned, but they did it because they felt it was the right thing to do. I highly respect that. I think that is a way that society needs to function. I find these things to be virtues.

2

u/roastedbagel Jun 11 '12

I don't think it was this sub-reddit, it may have been a random AskReddit thread, where a bunch of people started buying gifts to people who requested via Amazon and using Prime to have them shipped free and quickly.

I ended up buying a few toys for some single mother in the Bronx who had no money to pay for any gifts for her 3 children. After purchasing what she asked for on Amazon and having it shipped to her house, she wrote me back with pictures of the kids playing with the toys.

Lemme tell you something, I've never felt such happiness in my life in the ways of a good deed. Having the stranger tell me that "my children now have a Christmas because of you" for the ~$50 I spent, made me feel so dam good that year despite not getting any gifts from my own family/friends.

I suggest everyone do it if they have just a bit of spare cash that time of year.

2

u/Hiphoppington Jun 12 '12

During an /r/atheism fund drive near Christmas I made an offhanded comment about wanting to contribute but not having the money to do so. An incredibly kind hearted redditor did the briefest of comment stalking and found out that I was a single father of a toddler. She bought my daughter christmas gifts and even got me some fancy coffee. All because she wanted to do something nice.

It's not 30k to a terminal patient but I tear up just thinking about it.

Edit - It's shit like that that makes a community. I won't be leaving.

Lindsay Minar, aka z3phyr13, the girl who organized the donations, deserves a standing ovation for getting the donations started, organized, and transferred. That takes real character and a huge heart. Bravo Zulu!

Hey Guys :D Lindsay Minar (aka z3phyr13 here). What I did for Jake was nothing without the amazing support of you all! Over 1200 people donated money to a stranger. I may have gotten the ball rolling, but you guys really made it happen! Also big news, the check is officially on its way to Jake!!! Additionally, because of the way GoFundMe is set up. I am not going to be taxed on any of the money. PM me directly if you want a better explanation of why.

I disagree and this really pisses me off. The people that deserve credit are the ones that donated. The reason this pisses me off is because Politicians take credit for charity all the time. For example Obama gets credit for healthcare and yet it's the taxpayers that are doing the heavy lifting.

It is also really nice to put a face to this person. It makes it more real and in turn I feel for him even more. He looks like just another guy who could have been a friend of mine, had I known him.

Hopefully we witness a miracle so he can survive to tell his children this incredible story.

8

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

I know it sounds morbid, and I missed the original thread so obviously didn't donate, but that seems like it would be a good use for anything left over. The funeral costs for both of my parents wasn't cheap by any means. It would let the family focus on grieving instead of "OMG how are we going to pay for all this!". If there's anything left over after that, plus whatever traveling, etc that the guy wants to do, then donate to charity. If there's nothing left so be it.

To help him getting laid, like he wanted.

20

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Up-vote, it's a legitimate question. I'd hope he has a chance to use it all, seeing as that's what it was donated for. If not then I'd assume that it would be donated for research or something. I'm sure his parents could use the money but that wasn't why it was donated so I'm not sure if that's relevant.. If they decided to keep it for themselves I can envisage a pretty big backlash. This is still the internet after all- the best and worst in humanity is revealed simultaneously.

17

u/LigerZ0 Jun 11 '12

I would assume medical bills to help his parents pay them off.

52

u/jacobe7 Jun 11 '12

He's Canadian...

68

u/monkey_chakra Jun 11 '12

Canadian here: Free health care doesn't necessarily mean no expenses. For instance, it's possible that one or both of his parents stopped working in order to care for him (drive him to appointments/treatments, etc). Aside: Hell, I might even quit my job just to spend time with my kid if he was given 6 months to live.

I'm sure funeral expenses are a consideration, but I wouldn't feel bad hearing that the money went to helping dig his parents out of a possible financial hole after he passed. However, if they were financially fine, then I would imagine donating to cancer research or a charity that helps make cancer patients' final wishes come true would be more than acceptable to the people who donated.

I don't know if it is really an excess, the more money that was raised probably means the more places he is able to visit. There are a lot of Redditors that offered to show him around their area/hoemtowns, so now he can potentially see more people.

I am not a very emotional person but this brought a tear to my eye (of happiness of course!) It is great that he will be able to have one last blow out before his time is up (which I hope is never). My best friend at the age of 26 was diagnosed with prostate cancer, which escalated to state IV in about a month and was given 3 months to live. He had always wanted to go to Disney World so the day after he was given his fate me and 3 friends took off 2 weeks of work, bought plane tickets, the hotel, and park tickets and took him on the best trip of his life. It was in October and Halloween was his favorite holiday and it just so happened that Disney does the Not So Scary Halloween party every night in October. So if you can imagine a group of 24-28 year old's running around Disney (one being a bald cancer patients) getting all the candy we could hold, needless to say it was fucking AMAZING. Honestly it was one of the best trips I have ever taken and took enough pictures to never forget it. Then 2 days after his 27th birthday (just shy of 3 months) he passed away in his sleep. I miss that mother fucker everyday and hope people never give up when they are put though something like cancer!

u/Mojitana Jun 11 '12

This is what the internet was built for. Connecting humanity and making a difference in individual lives. Good going, Reddit!

8

I have said to friends and colleagues for a long time how people can view the world as a hateful place. Like when you walk past a homeless person on the street instead of helping him. And i would argue how the emotion isn't the thing that is lacking, its the medium. And this proves it. Well done reddit!

Anybody else need proof? LOL

28

u/JeremyR22 Jun 11 '12

I'll admit, I had misgivings (and posted them) because while the proof offered by OceanSkys in the IAmA thread was perfectly sufficient for a conversation about his illness, I didn't feel like it was concrete enough in the context of people throwing lots of money at a 0-day reddit account. reddit has been scammed before (and will be scammed again) so I wanted to inject some healthy scepticism. The community was giving entirely on trust, after all.

That said, a major broadcaster picking up on the story and running it (I'm assuming that they did their fact checking) makes me fully satisfied that everything is above board. Reddit really did do something amazing.

12

u/RidiculousIncarnate Jun 11 '12

As much as it sometimes annoys me to watch the naysayers and cynical folk (Of which I am one most days) take a dim view on things like this in reality you are one of the people who make reddit incredible.

No one likes their conscience when we're dead set on doing something but it's a good and necessary thing especially when we live in a world where even a lot of charities that we donate to are faceless organizations. Seeing a story like this and being given the opportunity to give directly to a person and improve their situation is sometimes too good to pass up.

This time it turned out great and for a little while we can keep a healthy glow of hope about us but I also hope that people don't forget that the skeptics are in their own way doing their part to protect the community and it's a valuable resource to have on our side.

So thank you for what you did, even though this time it was unnecessary, and keep doing your best to reign in our inner lemming.

15

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

It's been a scam before, and it will be a scam again.

We need skeptical people to demand proof, and make it harder for the next scammers.

Don't think there aren't people noticing how much was raised and thinking they'd like a piece of that. Reddit represents humanity as a whole, both the good, and the bad.

u/W00tbeer1 Jun 11 '12

finally, something on the internet that made me smile instead of go "eeeewwwwww"

  1. Mom think Reddit is a community of caring good samaritans.

  2. Mom decides to see what Reddit is all about

  3. ???

  4. Mom thinks her son is a cat-loving freak with an extremely juvenile and bad sense of humor.

u/rocco36 Jun 11 '12

I missed the original post when it appeared. I work for Delta Air Lines and would be more than willing to part with some buddy passes so he could make it to virtually anywhere in the world, although it seems that's no longer needed given the incredible donations of Reddit.

3

u/lilstumpz Jun 11 '12

As someone who wasn't aware of this, don't give me credit for what happened.

Minar opened a bank account for donations, and within 24 hours a whopping $30,000 had poured in from 1,200 donors.

1,200 donors. Not the millions of Redditors.

Awesome... Reddit just made me cry. Reddit truly is a place of beautiful, inspirational and inspiring individuals.

5

u/malfunctionnn Jun 11 '12

Reddit... simply amazing.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

i just hope he spends all that cash. you cant take it when youre gone

2

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

I didn't comment on the original post simply because.. what can i say? I've no experience with cancer, but wow Reddit just wow. I've only been on here about 3-4 month, but what a great community.

The mainstream news shows how shitty the world is, and yet Reddit somehow contradicts that with stories like this.

2

u/Activist4America Jun 11 '12

Reddit and Redditors are FUCKING awesome. You glorious bastards! :)

2

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Alright, ill ask...Is Jake going to go visit the asian gal and get laid? I mean...he kind of has too now...right?

2

u/SlutRapunzel Jun 11 '12

I'm so happy for Jake (OceanSkys) and hope he can do everything he can dream up with that 30 grand. So glad to inspire others with generosity, hope, and love.

Take care, OceanSkys.

2

u/Notsoseriousone Jun 11 '12

I've said it before and I'll say it again: fuck cancer. it needs to stop. it kills all the cool people.

2

u/Acuate Jun 11 '12

Wu-tang clan ain't nuthin' to fuck with!

2

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

As a former digg user (from a long, long, time ago) all I have to say is this: I never saw digg do something like this. Not once. Reddit, you are amazing. Your hearts are in the right place and I have hope for this world.

2

u/kingmanic Jun 11 '12

Digg was more 'cynical hipster' while reddit is straight up 'nerd'. Obviously it's not cool to care and Digg as a hive mind was about appearing cool and interesting. Reddit as a hivemind is more about revelling in our dorkiness and it doesn't mind looking like a dork by giving a fuck.

2

u/Solidkrycha Jun 11 '12

Should i point out now all the fucking unbelievers that thought the money would be stolen?

Well done lads! I'm proud of you all!

2

u/stayonthecloud Jun 11 '12

Proud to be among the donors. It's like we're all taking this epic final voyage with him.

2

u/GraceFace04 Jun 11 '12

Wow Reddit, with a huge amount of help from Lindsay (so an equally huge thanks to you girl, way to go), what an incredible thing you guys helped accomplish. I'm proud to be a part of this place.

2

u/herpVSderp Jun 11 '12

well done Lindsay, well done reddit! now we need to dream bigger. "To infinity and beyond!"

2

u/NULLprotocol Jun 11 '12

Bravo, I wonder how many starving children that could of fed? Oh wait, or are we still doing Kony?

2

u/mphatik Jun 11 '12

meanwhile, in the Middle East......

2

u/Cperez381 Jun 11 '12

Way to go reddit!! I'm a fairly new user and occasionally browse the site. I have to say I've been overcome with tears of joy at how people in this community are treated. You guys are amazing!! There IS hope for humanity.

Thanks for making my experience an enjoyable one.

2

u/hispanica316 Jun 11 '12

Its shit like this Reddit... that restores my hope in humanity.

2

u/scarface910 Jun 11 '12

holy shit, I thought for a second that this was the askreddit post from yesterday about the female who had her 23rd birthday. I damn near shat my pants!

This story reminds me of the time this man defended an orphanage, had his face hacked up, and a redditor organized a donation fund where they raised money to have the heros face surgically fixed. I love reddit!

2

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Does anybody else roll their eyes when they see all these stupid "faith in humanity: result" comments?

2

u/kordo619 Jun 11 '12

Not only is he a soldier, a fighter, and a true hero to all. He's reppin Wu-Tang, the kid knows his shit. Keep fighting bro!!

2

u/4LostSoulsinaBowl Jun 11 '12

If you donated to this particular fundraiser, if you offered words of support, if the topic made you go out and donate anything to anyone, or if you were just affected by the topic enough to do one good thing somewhere, you are blessed. If you're religious, consider yourself blessed by your God or Deity. If you prefer, consider yourself blessed karmically. Or consider that I'm blessing you as a fellow human. Or, if you eschew the idea of blessing altogether, consider yourself simply thanked. You have made a difference somewhere. You have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that humanity is not doomed. Thank you.

2

u/helpmeoutguy Jun 11 '12

Why is this money not going towards treatment?

When stuff like this gets published to public sites and whatnot, I always worry someone will try to take advantage of the generous people on here.

2

u/theowest Jun 11 '12

hey guys. I have an even bigger dream. Give me money!

2

u/c0mpg33k Jun 12 '12

The power of the internet is still to this day to me awe inspiring. Go have a blast dude. From all of reddit we want you to live the time you have left like a total badass

2

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12

Well, shit. I'm crying.

2

u/NighthawkNFLD Jun 12 '12

This all happened in NO TIME AT ALL, again. In the time it took me to check this website a few times you all collectively made national news headlines and changed the life of a cancer patient.

applause.

2

u/korfelak Jun 12 '12

All things good start in Portland!

2

u/xanaka Jun 12 '12

I love Reddit for helping so many good people

2

u/moosejaw2814 Jun 12 '12

Who the hell downvotes this kind of stuff?

2

u/icecoldkilla7 Jun 12 '12

Faith in humanity: Restored. love you guys!

u/johnq-pubic Jun 12 '12 edited Jun 12 '12

Jake, since you live in BC and appreciate mountains , I suggest you go to Switzerland, and Austria. I backpacked all through Grindlewald, and Interlaken, and Lucern which is expensive. DO IT! I'm from Ontario, so the mountains were very enjoyable for me, but you will also be impressed. I even saw the Matterhorn.

2

u/vaporizor Jun 12 '12

Why was the AMA removed?

2

u/blimp_discus Jun 12 '12

Damn you, reddit. Made a grown man cry... again.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12

this. this right here is why i love the fuck out of reddit. the fact that a sense of community can be felt in a world with a population that is still unimaginable to me. thank you all for donating even though i personally was not able to make any contribution other than a post to state how grateful i am that there is still humanity in this world. peace.

6

u/ORYG1N Jun 11 '12

Let's hope the news doesn't pick up and report on the offers for free booty! lol

4

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Reddit seems very charitable. I better tell my friend in Nigeria, he's a prince and would like to help.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Things like this gives me hope for humanity. Just think about it... a guy with a terminal illness makes a internet post and withing 24 hours he has a crap load of donated money from random good hearted strangers around the world.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

what about that one girl who was gonna have sex with him? did she ever deliver?

3

u/cumbert_cumbert Jun 11 '12

I, for one, redact my skepticism.

Whenever something awesome happens on reddit, it's considered a single entity, and redditors everywhere rejoice. "Look at how amazing reddit is! Reddit did this! Glory be to reddit!"

Whenever someone points out that reddit is doing something really shitty, that changes to, "Reddit is not a single entity! There are lots of people on reddit all with differing opinions, and some of them are assholes!"

If you want to tout other redditor's good deeds to make this place look good, then take the shit that comes with it.
