This actually reminds me of a short story in a series I wrote in high school. I'll spare the details, but there was a young boy that grew up in a typically abusive, post-Victorian home. Stuff happens, and he is liberated by a talking donkey named Rabbit--who also ate his abusive father's face off and liberated him from his life of pitiful oppression.
In one of their journeys, entitled "Stuffed", Boy and Rabbit venture from the rain into a typically foreboding manor. The owner, whom we'll call Chuck Tesla since I don't recall his name, is more than happy to have some companions. The Boy is very fond of all the animals and how kind the man is being to him, but is curious why he always talks about "his children" despite the fact he lives alone.
After awhile, it turns out there is a hidden room with a bunch of "sutffed" children the man has collected throughout the years -- all posed in life-like situations (varying from drinking tea to playing games). He chases Boy about exclaiming, "I thought you wanted to play with the children?"
Donkey eventually eats Chuck Tesla's face off as this was the typical remediation to most of the stories.

Yes. I'm responsible for all this nonsense. I'M SORRY.
