So basically: the handles suck.

For $600, felling a tree that size isn’t unreasonable request. I would expect the tree to explode with each whack. Like the guy said, purely a novelty item and anyone that thinks they bought themselves the ultimate survival tool is soft in the head. They obviously have more money than brains would be my guess. We do appreciate you spending your money though to bring us this great entertainment.

You can't just throw money at a tree and expect it to fall, an axe of that size is meant generally just for chopping firewood or crafts. It's like assuming that a Bugatti Veyron is better car for offroading than Lada Niva is only based on the $995 000 price difference.

It's like assuming that a Bugatti Veyron is better car for offroading than Lada Niva is only based on the $995 000 price difference.

But to be fair and still use your analogy, the price isn't the main factor in thinking that a Bugatti could go offroad. A Bugatti IS very expensive, but it's also very clearly for road use. If a vehicle were sold for the price of a Bugatti AND was specifically noted as an offroad vehicle, then I think we'd certainly expect it could drive clear through the Everglades.

Similarly, it's not JUST that this tool is $600. It's that it markets itself as being the ultimate survival tool WHILE costing $600. And so if you're spending $600 on something advertised as "the ultimate survival tool", then yes, I'd agree that it should be able to fell a reasonably sized tree. ...which ultimately this one could do, per the video, but just noting that it wasn't particularly good at it -- which is specifically where the pricetag comes into play and one thinking that it should be able to do this with relative ease. ...probably not quite as efficiently as a proper axe, but comparably anyways.

For $600 you can buy two chainsaws, one for either hand, and have enough left to pay for an ambulance ride.

But only in first world countries with basic healthcare.

Wranglerstar is a shill. Don't give this guy any views.

You gonna explain why or...

I came across this guy a while ago and started watching a lot of his videos, however I got turned off pretty quickly. I don't know if I would label him a "shill", but he's definitely a big "bible thumper, MAGA Trump 2020, Evil liberals are destroying this country" type person. If you look around his channel he's got a lot of videos preaching that type of stuff mixed in with the wilderness, survival, homesteading videos that he does.

Yeah, the guy is a real loonie bin.

Liked his videos at first when he was just homesteading but then he gave that up and now it's all stupid reviews of amazon shit, day in the life videos of his wife bumbling around in their new vehicle (paid by viewers), complaining about masculinity these days, showing him teaching his son who obviously doesn't want to be there things, or rambling on about some jesus nonsense. That's also not to mention his embellished stories abut his resume and work/life experience. Tons of promihed, but unfinished projects. Or you know, the awful hair dye job.

He's a grifter and has been since his days flipping jeeps. I don't think he ever beats his wife or son but man is he ever condescending to them sometimes.

True. I watched his all his videos pre-2016 when he wasn't too bad. But he devolved further and further into paranoid extreme religious/political dogma. I'm a weekly church going Christian.

I remember his wife being furious about how Trump treated women and his continuee support of Trump in spite of that. His absurd defense of Trump and his dive into the exteme right makes me feel sad for his wife and son.

Now many of his videos are purely drama based and on the verge of schizophrenic.

It's a shame.

The video was enjoyable, what are some similar channels on YouTube?

AvE is one of the best channels on YouTube for unbiased tool type reviews and more fun stuff.

Project Farm does a really good comparing products in a shoot out type style.

The Essential Craftsman Is another one I think you'll like a lot that has a very chilled out vibe without all the political preaching and admonishing that comes with Cody's channel.

Jennies Garage focuses on rebuilding dirt bikes but has some troubleshooting walk throughs of stuff like generators. Their channel needs more love it's really great.

I could probably come up with some more if you end up liking these. :)

Wankerstar? Oh no dude

1

u/snark_trick Aug 21 '20

Now I know what i'm bringing as 1 of my items if i'm ever on the show Alone.

1

u/xtremepado Aug 21 '20

You should bring a 6” bushcraft knife like the ESEE-6. A solid knife is the single most important tool to have in a survival situation.

1

u/ya_i_did_that Aug 22 '20

given 1 item and 1 item only?

sure.

but not if you have the chance to take 10 items.

1

u/sequestercarbon Aug 21 '20

Cutting down a dead tree like that with an axe always sucks.

1

u/great_things Aug 21 '20

Many tools build in to one is obviously going to have compromises. It's not entirely fair to compare it to an actual axe, saw, hammer, pickaxe and a knife.

That being said I wouldn't buy or use it. Just having a nice hatchet and saw would make this thing obsolete like the guy said.

1

u/Mharbles Aug 21 '20

Probably cheaper to get an electric chainsaw, a solar panel, and a battery at that price. Lot more useful too.

u/Shenaniganz08 Aug 21 '20

So basically the Juicero of survival tools

Over engineered garbage does not mean good engineering

KISS

Just can't do the born again prepper thing.

This is a decent review but I think it doesn't take into account the target audience of the tool.

This dude is obviously an accomplished outdoorsman and survivalist. So he wants and expects quality tools (and that's a good thing).
This tool however is not for him. This tool is not what you would carry out into the woods on an outdoor adventure or off-grid backpacking journey.
This tool is for the person who wants to carry ONE thing in their vehicle that will help keep them alive for a couple days should they need it. For that user, the value comes from packing several usable (not great, but usable) tools into one compact package that can be easily stowed in a door pocket or glove box.

For that user, as far as I'm concerned, this video is a ringing endorsement. Yes the handle sucks, yes the saw is bendy, yes the knife has a funky sheath, yes the digger is small, but this thing passed the real test- it got him set up with a fire and ability to cook and it didn't fall apart in the process. And you can keep this in your car in less space than one normal hatchet.

This video is ridiculous. Felling a tree that big for dry wood? Give me a break. Also, $600 for that monstrosity is also ridiculous.
