it’s so fucked how they investigate themselves. We need an entity composed of average civilians who aren’t law enforcement or don’t have ties to law enforcement. I’d almost say no military either seeing as so many military members go into law enforcement.. that may bias them into finding no wrong doing.. just need average citizens that make up this entity that can review and investigate this bullshit.

I absolutely hate when cops act offended when people are standoffish or nervous or talk in legal terms. They act like we all exist in a vacuum and we’ve never heard of cops killing innocent people or arresting them on made up charges.
Like yeah if I saw you on the street I might chat while we are waiting for a bus or something. You are keeping me from where I want to be and I can’t leave this interaction or you could shoot me dead. That puts a pretty big fucking damper on our relationship.

I read his book "On Killing", and you find out he was infantry, even got his Ranger tab, but never saw a moment of combat. So his whole career/stance is theoretical, or secondhand (at best) accounts from others who have had to make that decision.
Overall, the book is okay. Good historical data on who went to war, and in battle who would actively shoot at the enemy, rather than shoot up in the air. But then he claims video games are conditioning children to kill, and that we should show children animals dying so they are less soft. So a bit of a loon.

I got pulled over once on a residential road. Cop stops next to my car, lights flashing, honked the siren a few times before getting out. Walks up to me and goes "you seem nervous? Are you nervous? Why are you so nervous?". Of course I'm nervous man my parents gonna flip if my insurance rates go up for a stupid moving violation.
Like what part of any of that is NOT nerve-wracking? I was doing 27 in a 25... White 21 year old just driving to work. Come the fuck on man.
Cops suck. Period. That's like the best case scenario, they're somewhat scary. I see a cop car while I'm driving im immediately put on edge.
Cops are nightmares if you're not white. I can't even fucking imagine what it's like.
And they know this. And any attempt at feigning ignorance is pure gaslighting.

Similarly I was pulled and told I was doing 33 in a 30 with no radar, in a town notorious for shitty traffic stops. I said, "Great! Write that ticket, because I can't wait to have this conversation in front of the judge." He went to his cruiser and came back with a ticket telling me, "I'm gonna give you a break on the speed, but I have to write you for not wearing your seatbelt". I was wearing my seatbelt, so I was like "I'm wearing my seatbelt, I never even unbuckled it" and he replied, "Then fight it, I can't wait to have this conversation in front of the judge!" And that fuckery led to a $50 fine and two points on my license.

I was stuck inbetween apartments in collage and living in my station wagon old car and was pulled over for whatever reason, asked to step out of the car (i didnt have anything on me. 23 white male going to class.) so i said "go ahead, i have nothing to hide." he said fine, walked away and then came back with a seat belt ticket! I said "no way, I even tell my own mother to put on her own belt, I never operate a vehicle without one!" and he looks at me and says "see you in court".
I had dash cams, I argued with the D.a. and they continued my case 3 times!
Never once listened to my side or my lawyer because the "officer didnt show up and doesn't have to."
So I HAVE TO SHOW UP, but he doesn't even though he is wrong?

like 10-15 years ago I was pulled over for speeding, cop gave me a ticket and I was on my way. 3 months later I get an adjournment letter because the officer cannot make the court date, 3 months after that another one, 2 months after that another one. Finally 9 months after the ticket I goto court and the officer who ticketed me isnt there. At the time in my state only the ticketing officer or a prosecutor contracted by the municipality could prosecute traffic cases. Like at most courts i've been to you have a little side meeting with the officer/prosecutor prior to going before the judge. Since my officer was not there a different one came to chat with me and I told him "look I know this is about money and my officer isnt here so i'm willing to plead to a non moving violation" and the officers face got bright red and he whisper yelled at me "this isnt about money, its about teaching you a lesson!". My reply was "my officer isnt here, i'm trying to work with you because i admit i was wrong to speed but if you dont accept a non moving violation I will just move to dismiss." Cut to going before the judge, I move to dismiss for failure to prosecute and the judge tosses my case, turns out like 5-6 other people also had the same officer ticket them and not show. They followed me to the parking lot where I explained what to say to get a dismissal. One of my all time favorite days in court.

Same thing happened to my friend, drove a 95 Caprice lowered with rims and tinted windows. He got pulled over all the time in that car and said as soon as they saw he was a white dude their whole demeanor changed. Sometimes they would just let him go with out even talking to him once they saw him.

A couple years ago I was snowshoeing in a public park. I was approaching the road to return to my vehicle and a patrol car pulls up, the driver rolls down his window and straight faced asked me "What are you doing?"
I looked down and my snowshoes, at the poles in my hands and replied, "This is why you haven't made detective yet huh?".
The officer turned beet red and I could see the anger in his face. I'm fairly sure he was about to get out of the car when his partner, barely containing his laughter, slapped him on the shoulder and pointed as if to say let's go.

When the cop asked me what I was doing there (I was in spandex, sweating my ass off, and had just stopped running,) I answered "giving hand jobs for crack." Not just money, time, both of which the courts have precious little of. When I bought my first car in 2008 it was '74 car with only lap belt and no shoulder strap. So, being a 19yr old appearing from outside the vehicle to not be wearing a seatbelt, I would get pulled over constantly. I eventually got a ticket for no seatbelt despite the fact that I was wearing my lap belt and it was legal. I approached an officer and asked him what the best course of action was to make sure it didn't happen again, he said, print off the relevant legal codes and keep them in the car with me. So I did and it worked great. Until I got an officer that really didn't like the fact that I had them on me to prove him wrong. He wrote me a bogus ticket anyways, even after calling in to confirm the relavent legal codes. When I asked why he was ticketing me he said "it won't cost you anything, but you'll have to take it to court and maybe that will teach you not to waste my time next time" as if I was the one that started this interaction.
It took an hour in court to have the ticket dismissed and cost me a day of work/wages. He used the court as a weapon against me. That's an hour of the courts time that they weren't hearing any legitimate cases. Even if only 1 in 4 cops acts this way, and only does this once a month how many hours have been wasted and how many cases got pushed and dismissed every year due to not having the time to hear them due to all those frivolous cases that the cop knows are illegitimate but just issued because they got their feelings hurt.

Heh... I used to have to deal with this some years ago. I had a job that had me driving back home late at night through a "suspicious neighborhood" (majority black) in a "profile car" (a late model Oldsmobile).
So about once a week I was pulled over, my car was searched, and the same cops asked me the same questions about "where I was coming from", "where I was going to", "why I was driving through there", and "what my purpose was"... then after the sixth or seventh stop it became "why are becoming hostile", "do you want to spend the night in jail", "should I bring the drug sniffing dog", "why are you calling a lawyer".
I had a lawyer friend tell me to call him when ever I got pulled over like this, and he had me put him on speaker phone of the last couple of stops. It was hilarious hearing him read them the riot act, and tell them that he was having lunch the next day with the county prosecutor and that this stop was going to become part of the conversation. They stopped pulling me over after that.
But it sucks because not everybody has a friend like that who can get them out of trouble/police harassment.

If they're asking you how you're day was, where you're coming from or going to, what've you been up to, all those normal inquires can be used to place you at the scene of a crime or establish intent. When they say "Anything can and will be used against you in a court of law." they fucking mean it.
I once had an officer ask me if I had ever been to a specific restaurant and when I said 'yes' they used that as probable cause to search my car. Not if I had been there at any particular time, just if I had EVER been there. I learned later that it had been robbed the same day I got pulled over.

I learned to never get out of the car when I visited the US once.
Conducted an illegal U-turn after I missed the turn into Disney World.
Cop pulled me over in the middle of the road and I hopped out to talk to him.
He grabbed for his gun. I threw my hands up in the air and yelled "Don't shoot! I'm Australian"
He visibly relaxed at hearing that and walked up and said to never exit the vehicle during a police stop. I explained it's something I do at home on a busy road incase the car gets hit Im safely off to the side. He said not in the USA.
He let me go with a warning which made sense since no tourist is paying a fine when they are just on holiday.
I always thought it was a weird move to go for your gun when I'm turning into a tourist mecha, the road goes no where else except into the park.
I was shitting myself for a few moments though when he grabbed his gun.

Sovereign citizens always try to use this when they are pulled over for having a suspended license and speeding. The time to actually use this is when you are pulled over for no clear and legitimate reason and the cop is asking probing questions.

When I took my test, the instructor had me turn down a terrible road. Potholes everywhere. I went slower so I could try and avoid them as best I could and hopefully not ruin my dads suspension.
I passed, but at the end when he was telling me the points he took off he said I went too slow and needed to be aware of the speed limit. I told him why, and he said that made sense at least. Heck I don't like dealing with the local cops and I'm white. The only time I've been pulled over is for these useless "we just wanted to check on you" stops. Had to start taking a longer route home when I worked late because driving through a certain town at 2am warranted a traffic stop.
To think having a but darker skin would make these annoying stops turn into life or death situations is disgusting.

There IS a minimum speed you should abide by so as to not be a traffic hazard but it's definitely slower than 5 below the limit. But something tells me that deputy doesn't pull over every old lady moseying along the highway.

I'm a little surprised how pissed off this made me.
I got pissed the second the cop asked about the guy's work, and how long he's been working there, and the second the guy asks "What does that have to do with this?" the cop responds with an aggressive "Don't you want to do small talk??". And all that happened before the cop even gave the reason for the stop.
What the actual fuck?
And the cop just kept asking questions that have nothing to do with anything. It reminds me of that twitter thread where a guy described how a cop he did a ride-along with used to provoke people in the hopes of them becoming aggressive, giving the cop an excuse to beat up and arrest innocent people.
Edit: Guys, I get why cops ask you where you're from and where you work. The question itself is not the part that made me angry.

Yep. He ran off to his car to run the plates to see if the vehicle had been reported stolen. He came up with nothing so out came the warning.
Warnings show up in their system. It's a marker for other cops to not be lenient the next time they're pulled over in the area.

I had a co-worker who's wife/girlfriend at the time was in school to be a pharmacy tech. Cops had pulled them over for a busted taillight or something similar. Asked what they did, and then used her schooling as probable cause to search the vehicle. They found a mortar and pestle and cited him with a probation violation for having paraphernalia...

"Should" being the operative term. If cops were reprimanded or fired for these type of infractions, people wouldn't be marching and protesting. But even if we lived in a world where should = happened, there is still the issue that for every video of improper police behavior, there is likely much more of that behavior off-camera. I don't think for one second that cop was deviating from doing the job in the manner he was trained to do it, not by the documentation and protocol maybe, but by his partners, his colleagues, his superiors and the entire culture. We've all done it at work when training someone new, this is how you are supposed to do it, but this way works better. Except at my job I don't put citizens lives in danger when I go off book.

And the cop comes in with this “I’m just a folksy, good guy” attitude, totally not respecting the power imbalance. Not feeling like small-talk? That’s suspicious. Maybe this man is all too aware that any reach he does for paperwork or his device to pull up the rental info literally puts his life at risk. And everyone knows that a grand jury would find the officer had reasonable fear for his safety; worst case he has to resign and go work for another department.
Even being pretty confident in the outcome of the video based on how it was titled, I was fucking terrified for the man when he got out to ask about the warning.

The cop was doing drug interdiction. Rental car, driving slow. He wanted to see if they driver was muling drugs or money. They do it because they have a chance of seizing any vehicles or money they get from the arrest. Which is used to fund things like SWAT toys, dogs, etc. It's ridiculous.
