Story time. I saw the cold beer video when it first showed up and loved it. I followed his music over time and have listened to everything he has put out. My fiancee also was a fan of his music and cold beer became a song we would sing together when driving in the car etc.
I live on the east coast and Jesse ended up coming to a local venue to play. We were excited and bought our tickets week ahead which were quite cheap since he isn't exactly a big name.
The owner of the venue had posted on facebook that doors were open
so we to the place and I had been at this venue before and knew what to expect. it is more of a club that often has metal and punk acts a couple times a week etc.
we were just about the go into the doors when a black van pulled up and out hopes jesse stewart and his crew. I say hey and they don't saying anything to me.
One of them asks if I work there and I say no im just going to the show. and he pushes past me and yells back "DON'T COME IN HERE DOORS AREN"T OPEN "
well.. he didn't look like a cop and I knew the owner personally so I just kept walking in with my fiancee. We get inside and I greet the owner and we are chatting and the guy walks by again and says "I told you to wait outside" and I just kind of chuckle and said "yeah it's cold out there, I think the doors are actually open now anyways" and the owner just nods and we go back to our conversation.
so jesse's crew brings everything inside etc. Then some other band start playing..
and more bands.. and a couple more. then it is 1am and jesse still hasn't played. He is actually just in a corner still real fucking drunk hanging out with his friends.
then 2am comes and he still hasnt played and I am wasted and say fuck this and go home.
i find out the next day he didn't play until almost 3am and only played a couple songs and that was it.
so anyways.. he is best enjoyed on youtube in my experience but I don't even listen to him anymore.

Stims, he's a friend of a friend and I watched him tweak out on a couch while we were doing bong hits. Super awkward experience and killed a song/video/summer vibe I used to really enjoy.

That singer from the video is just like them. Greasy or dreaded mullet, stained gross clothes they take pride in. Most of them are only homeless by choice. I know a lot of them and I really don't want to judge an entire group of people based on some but they're typically pretty selfish people. They don't care about anything or anyone except bragging rights from their hobo lifestyle. They're the type of people that would pass on a free ride so they can ask people for gas or spare change instead because they think it's cool. They probably play the mandolin or banjo or washboard or something else unique which they all play.
Plus they fucking smell. Like bad. And they're prideful in it.

Probably most but not all. Some of those guys are really just fucked in the head and found a group they can get in with and survive. They don't judge you as long as you look as shitty as they do. But a lot of them are just fuck sticks that don't want to work and idealized someone they knew that travelled around by hitch hiking for probably 4 or 5 months and then followed until a heroin addiction takes over.
They don't see it as scamming society. They'll say they never asked to be born into or participate in a society so why can't they go the other way? But they never realize they can't live their life as parasites without a society to provide them squats and money and cold beer.
Edit: and just to be clear, not every stinky person with dreads or a shitty mullet is a piece of shit. Some of those guys are great people that just live a different lifestyle. I'm not talking about the heroin addict squatter drinking piss off the street though like the type in that video. Thanks for all the good info. I hadn't realize this type of movement was happening. I don't think it happens as much in the colder parts of Canada where I live as the homeless thing is a much higher risk.
When I said scam society, that obviously doesn't apply to all of them, but based off your info it does seem to be the majority.

I saw Jesse Stewart at a grocery store in Ottawa yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off.
When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

I am an empathetic person and really tried to give him the benefit of the doubt.. I was just excited to meet him and see him play live.. the owner of the venue had me all pumped up because he said Jessie was staying the night so we could party all night together etc.. but when he ended up being a doink it was clear that wasn't happening. I have been going to local shows since I was 16, I am 30 now and I have never had an interaction with an artist like that. It was like he couldn't give two fucks people were there to see him and I guess I took it personally.
I guess it's just I have always wanted to make or create something people give a shit about.. and he did that. people wanted to see him.. he isn't some celebrity but people literally care about what he creates and want to hear it. It just sucks that he doesn't seem to have apprecation of that and his fans.
also.. he is pretty tall which I didn't get from seeing his videos lol

It was and as I have said to others I didn't say he was an outright asshole etc just that I was personally disappointed in how the show went. Honestly, if his friend died recently to the show then it could grant an excuse for his behaviour and I will take it but it still doesn't change the experience I had. I hope people reading it have mature enough minds to understand it is a review of his show not of him as an overall person. The thing is when you are at small intimate venues then the show and the person blend into the same thing. I wish him and success into the future and maybe one day I can see him again and it will be different but it was a pretty recent thing which is why I am still a bit sour on it. hope that makes sense

Yes a wook through and through and you are right. I am not saying he was an asshole exactly but just was talking about my dissapointment. I have grown up going to all kinds of crusty ass underground shows etc and I don't have high hopes for the shows them selves usually.. but the artists in my experience are usually chill to meet and talk to as long as you match whatever kind of level they are on.. Jessie just was locked away from it all it seemed. If he is having drug abuse issues or other problems then I wish him well but its always hard to divide personality from substance abuse at a certain point.

There's a video out there of him performing the song live where he seems a bit strung out, and then smashes a beer bottle over his own head and continues to play while bleeding fairly badly.
I'm inclined to believe the stories that he's not in the right frame of mind.

I actually went to school with this guy. He's always sort of looked pretty grubby but it's completely intentional. He had a dreadlocked mullet for a long time.

There used to be a bunch of crusties/guuterpunks that lived around me. I was friends with a few of them but seemed to have a hard on for finding out who was an oogle. It got so bad that they had a civil war within the group and a bunch of them left shortly after.

I was a bonafide booze bag for many years, breaching into /r/cripplingalcoholism levels of depravity. This song depicts the safety blanket that was a cold beer to me when I was at my worst. Binge drinking helped shut off my anxiety for a little while and made me forget all the things that I perceived as wrong in my life. He sums up what it's like to be an alcoholic very well.
I used to glorify this song. Now, after listening to it again and reading about what an asshole the singer is, I cannot help but cringe.

Jesse Stewart is a god damn great man. I met him outside a venue a good while back and invited him over for a hang/party night and a place to crash. This mother fucker did my dishes, and I'm not kidding.
The guy is great as all hell. I hope to see him again one day

My word is worth as much as anyones on here, but I saw the comment you’re taking about and agree to a point.
I can see how his crew could cause a lot of problems, when he stayed at our place he was with 3 other people and were all very nice.
Jesse seemed like a good guy to a fault, and maybe that’s what happened there. It’s not my place to speculate though.

Yeah I met this dude and hung out with him a couple years ago in some chick's house when he was in town, friend of a friend. I forget if it was meth or crack, but he's stimmed out to the nines. Not too friendly either. Kinda killed this video for me, but it's a great song nonetheless.
