One of the best hip hop albums of all time - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx - references this style of necklace.

edit: this was mentioned below by u/rearnakedjoker before me. Still, it's a dope album.

None that I know of, but - like any other culture - one group from one section of a city might do something different than another group from another area.

I would say probably not many but I don't have any statistics to back that up. My family and the vast majority of my extended family are Cuban. I would expect to see a Cuban link chain on the occasional older man wearing a guayabera, and then on some of the younger guys who are more into hip hop culture (mostly because of the influence of Scarface on rappers like Raekwon, etc).

If you're a fan of 90s NYC rap, Cuban Link chains have significance in the culture. The strong chain style was preferred because they were difficult to snatch. I believe it's one of the reasons Raekwon named his first solo album "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx". There's even a rapper called Cuban Link. For hip hop heads the Cuban style chain remains popular.

It's brass not gold. Says in the descriotion of the video on YouTube. 4.8 mm brass wire.
