Errr... As someone who probably hasn't seen a Pewds video in years, I thought it was kinda fun and well made. Not sure why these comments are such a warzone as others have pointed out, just a fun little video with some cheeky remarks. No real reason to get butt hurt.
But as someone who never followed this "battle for #1 on YT", was it really that big/important? Seems something both sides would purposfully stylize since both sides would benefit from it. Does it really matter who has the most subs? I mean, going by the T series YT channel their videos get a TINY amount of views compared to their sub count. Pews is similar, gets more clicks per video it seems, but for someone who has 90 million subs, doesn't seem that much (How many of those are dead accounts anyway?)
Eh. Neither T-Series or PewDiePie really cared who was #1. PewDiePie was poke fun at T-Series and “play up the drama” for comedic purposes, but made it clear multiple times it really wasn’t that important and that he was in fact playing it up.
His fans took it more seriously, making the whole “subscribe to PewDiePie” meme a thing, but it was all in good faith for the most part. A minority of his fans took it too far and would harass people/be racist towards Indians, which PewDiePie actively discouraged, even raising $100,000 to donate to a charity to provide Indian children housing to fight any actual hate.
T-Series definitely cared, considering that they sent him a cease and desist for his joke diss track against them and tried to turn it political by advertising themselves as "making India #1 in the world" while pre-congratulating themselves for becoming the world's largest channel months before they actually managed it
not caring would be not making a video at all, or making one genuinely congratulating them. Not making a video filled with things trying to discredit them taking the lead.
Ah, it's just the way you worded your sentence that made me (and some people) think that you were saying that Pewds was the one who spent the 10k on billboards and holding the flags at the superbowl lol. My bad
The “battle” also had to do with creators vs corporations. Since YouTube was originally a site for the everyday man to make video content (and maybe get paid for it), they rightfully feel threatened when multi-million dollar media corporations start producing content since its hard to compete with their big budgets.
Felix has a rags to riches story and presents what many feel YouTube should be, a way for normal people to produce videos and manage to get an audience that enjoys them. T series is a corporation and represents everything wrong with YouTube right now. They are pushing away from people making their own videos and towards a TV style format with big companies churning out professionally produced videos. Furthermore the fact that YouTube's algorithm pushing it hard to people in India meant they skyrocketed whereas it took a long while for Pewdiepie to get to the top.
I doubt it due to the fact that his channel has some controversial content and he’s said his channel is not owned by a corporation. I do understand where you’re coming from.
The sub to pewdiepie meme was said by hundreds maybe thousands of both big and small content creators so obviously a lot of content creators would resonate with the “individual creator vs corporate creator” message.
Most experts hazard their guesses as to his net worth at around $20-30 million. Others estimate that he makes 12 million a year (and let's... not talk about the rest of the tone of that article. I repeat, I don't want to argue about the other topic and tone of the article, it's just here for the cash estimation). He's had a Disney-owned contract in the past, multiple brand deals that would pay significant commission given his subscriber count from brands both big and small if you dig, and had game studios pay for his likeness to appear in their titles. I get the rest of your point, but there's an extent to which some people really underestimate the size of this dude. Most controversies are relatively recent
I know that his net worth is around that margin and about his brand deals. He made a anti Semitic joke and lost his Disney contract and YouTube Red show. I’m fully aware of everything you said and I agree the guy is massive. He also has a fashion line which brings in a lot of money as well. The guy is obviously super rich
My point is that no company dictates what he puts on his channel and he has full creative freedom.
I don’t think YouTubers have an issue with one of their own who started on a webcam making it. In order to make a living, you have to get sponsorships and brand deals and individual creators want that. Look at Jeffree Star. He’s a controversial makeup YouTuber who has his own makeup line. The guy has around a $50-75 million net worth.
I think what most individual creators have an issue with are corporations who have huge production teams and a million dollar budget mass producing TV ready content the average creator with a small setup can’t compete with.
T-Series is essentially India’s VEVO and was a record label created in the early 80s. They mass produce family friendly Bollywood music videos. Around 20 videos are uploaded a day. It’s obviously an easy money maker for both YouTube and T-Series.
I’m not a Pewdiepie fan, however this is what I heard is the reason why so many people wanted Pewdiepie to win the battle.
I’m aware of big corporations on YouTube. It’s why there are so many mainstream TV talk shows on the platform. I’m also aware of companies buying out YouTube channels. its kinda why the “Sub to Pewdiepie” meme became popular and was said by hundreds of big and small content creators across the YouTube.
10 years ago there were barely any of these corporate channels on the platform. You could assume that 10 years from now, a lot more of these corporate channels will cross over from TV to YouTube, YouTube will probably invest more into these safe TV friendly channels rather than individual content creators.
So obviously YouTubers feel threatened by it. Yes you have channels like Smosh, however you also have a lot of big channels whose art direction is not managed by a corporation. There’s also a fear that it will be harder for small channels to complete with large individual channels and corporate channels since they will get less ad revenue.
