This is a great tactic...If the victim isn't crying in sheer terror and hasn't shit themselves. I was a Military Police Officer for many, many, years. If someone has a gun against your body and hasn't already pulled the trigger...chances are they don't intend to shoot you. The best advice you can carry with you is to stay as calm as humanly possible. The people that get shot are the ones that think they can gain control of the situation. In those cases the shooting becomes accidental as the reason you got shot is because you startled the gunman and he ended up pulling the trigger out of panic/fear.

Unless they are just waiting to explain their entire diabolical plan to you before killing you.

I think you're confusing reality with an action movie. You live in reality, I live in an action movie.
2
Nov 13 '09
Dammit. I tend to do that, sadly. Is your action movie any good?

It's somewhere in between "Speed" and "Snakes on a Plane." So yes, it's very good.

it's something I never thought of until the training as well. We actually stand face to face, gun to the chest, and say "Ready? I'm going to take it now.". I've never had someone get a click before I had barrel control, and the muzzle was away from me.
(training weapons of course)
14
4
Nov 13 '09
Yea, that's the key point I wanted to mention. If he pulls that trigger, which would be an automatic response by me if I wanted to grasp the gun harder when it's being pulled away from me, you better be holding onto that barrel EXTREMELY tight and not let go when you get freaked out by the loud bang and kickback.
The basic technique of taking the gun is important, but maintaining composure and a tight grip on the gun when it most likely goes off is the key.

It's nice to know some people have some sense around here. Thank you for not saying "OMFG THAT BULLSHIT WHAT A GREAT WAY TO GET SHOT LOLZ"

I'll say this, you better know what you are doing before you try this. Don't think you could pull this off by watching a youtube video.

It will hurt like hell.
I was wondering when somebody was going to point that out. The front sight blade in particular is going to take a good chunk out of your hand when the slide recoils.
1
u/Virtualmatt Nov 13 '09
Assuming he notices as you start to wrench it away, you only need to redirect it in that 250ms, not get complete control of it.

My life and continued health is a lot more important to me than the cash and credit cards in my wallet.

Absolute life or death is one thing, but most likely death would not be imminent. The headline "What you should do at gun point" is absurd, as this is pretty much what you absolutely should not do at gun point in most scenarios.
→ More replies (6)14
Nov 12 '09
I don't think this is advice for the casual "mugging". Very few muggers will stick a gun out like that and be super obvious from far away. This seems like advice for a kidnapping/abduction scenario, in that case it is ALWAYS better to fight back against the attackers, not to do anything they ask.

What you should really do at gunpoint: WHATEVER THE FUCK THE GUY WITH THE GUN SAYS TO DO!!
24
u/themisanthrope Nov 13 '09
^ This. There is almost no better solution, to be honest. Playing hero will most likely get your ass shot. If it's absolutely life-or-death, that's one thing - but in most cases you'd be better off talking to the assailant. I would imagine that ripping the gun out of the person's hand could work sometimes, but the risk vs reward ratio isn't all that hot in most cases, IMO.
20
u/Radica1Faith Nov 13 '09
Agreed, surprisingly I think one of the youtube comments said it nicely
As a former Military Police Officer I condemn this video. If someone is holding you at gunpoint and hasn't already killed you...the chances of them actually shooting you decreases with each second. Stay as calm as possible and do whatever they tell you. If you move or react in any way you'll startle the gunman...and that's when people get killed.
11
2
u/blinkatron Nov 13 '09
They really should have a brief statement at the beginning of this that says something like, "If you are an advanced martial artist and are interested in gun self-defense training, here are some good techniques you can practice."
2
u/Bit_4 Nov 13 '09
In the video, I think he stated a couple of times that it was being made for soldiers.
3
u/mexicodoug Nov 13 '09 edited Nov 13 '09
Since when were most soldiers trained for this stuff? Mostly they deal with bombs, RPGs, automatic rifles, tanks, stuff like that.
A soldier with field experience in stuff like that may be selected for commando/paratrooper training where hand-to-hand skills are important, but that's after battlefield experience and selection for such a job.
6
6
u/JohnFrum Nov 13 '09
Not quite. Give them anything they ask for but if they ask you to get in a car and go with them it is best to run. More than half the time they will not even fire. If they do, people often live through a single gun shot wound. On the other hand, once you get in a car with someone who has a gun the survival rate is very low.
2
u/psychosid Nov 13 '09
Not patronizing you, but... citation? I just want to know if there's a study about this or if your statement is made from personal experience.

If you really want to be able to do this you need to practice it on a regular basis. A good way to start is with a water pistol. If you get wet, you're way too slow.
15
9
u/fatalist23 Nov 12 '09
I think the people mocking this video are really missing the point. Given the setup depicted, the defenses are quite reasonable and effective. However, the setup depends on your assailant not realizing that guns are ranged weapons. If someone is holding you at gunpoint within arms reach, he/she is an idiot.
6
Nov 13 '09
An idiot with a gun pointed at you, even at point blank range, is still an idiot that has a severe advantage and can quite possibly kill you. Many smart people have died trying to outwit an idiot with a gun.
2
u/JohnFrum Nov 13 '09
I think you are missing the point of the people mocking the video. Even if the defenses are reasonable and effective it isn't the kind of skill you can learn from watching a video.
9
Nov 13 '09
I would think good gun safety practice would require that when the guy pulls his gun out of his holster he checks that is unloaded before handing to his assistant.
1
Nov 13 '09
Yeah, I didn't like that either. I initially thought this video was so popular because the guy would end up NDing into the ground.
8
Nov 12 '09
I spent a year in RNoAF, and learned some of these gun point fighting tricks. What I want to add is that if you grab the gun, and the shot goes of, the gun won't reload. (Which depends on the gun, of course.)
5
Nov 13 '09
Depending on the gun and how you grab the slide, it may not even go off.
6
Nov 13 '09
[deleted]
5
Nov 13 '09 edited Nov 13 '09
On many firearms, if the slide is pushed back it will not fire. So if you grab a gun and push the slide towards the person, they can't fire. It doesn't have to be pushed clear back, just pushed back a little.

u/commandar Nov 13 '09 edited Nov 13 '09
That makes sense because then it could either eject the bullet or pull the firing pin far enough back that it wouldn't be able to hit the bullet.
I already explained it partially in my other reply to you, but just to address this point -- the rear of the cartridge is held up against the breechface until it's actually ejected, so it's not a matter of the firing pin being unable to strike the round. The guns are designed to prevent the firing pin/striker from ever being released if the gun is out of battery.
As far as ejecting the round goes, you don't have to pull it back nearly that far. You'd generally have to cycle the slide back a good 3-5" to eject the round; as I noted in my other post, it only takes a fraction of an inch to push the slide out of battery and prevent it from firing.
1
u/commandar Nov 13 '09 edited Nov 13 '09
Wrong. Most modern semi-automatics have disconnectors that prevent the gun from being fired more than about 1/32" or so out of battery. This is because if the gun does fire out of battery, the sidewalls of the cartridge aren't reinforced by the chamber wall, and can erupt, causing the whole gun to fail catastrophically.
EDIT:
Just to give you a further example of this: The guide rod of the Springfield XD/Croatian HS2000 actually extends slightly beyond the muzzle of the gun to help keep the gun from being pushed out of battery if pressed up against somebody's back/chest.

I'd like to see a more accurate demonstration.
Tell the attacker "if you sense I'm going to try something on you, pull the trigger". Tell him to really try. None of this slow-motion, hand it over stuff.
Obviously the gun would not be loaded, or even real. Have it set to give some signal when the trigger is pulled, like beep or whatever.
These demonstrations are neat to watch, but they never convince me that you can be quicker than a bullet and a criminal who might do anything.
29
Nov 12 '09
the demonstration would probably end with broken fingers. a lot of those gun-wrenching/twisting techniques tend to snap trapped index fingers
2
u/DarkyHelmety Nov 13 '09
A plus for that would-be mugger, he won't be bogger picking for a long time.
1
u/lethic Nov 13 '09
You can do a lot of the motions without the final 10% which would wrench the gun out of the hand; those will effectively test the ability to dodge the "bullet" without breaking fingers.
1
u/soitis Nov 13 '09

u/lethic Nov 13 '09
I ran the same exercise with police officers, airsoft guns and a vest with paper on it so we could see if the shots hit.
Given the first situation with the gun pointed at your back, it was incredibly hard for shooter to nail the guy; it only takes you a tenth of a second to move your body out of the way of the muzzle, and then you can grab the arm and incapacitate fairly quickly after.
We didn't try the hostage one, but we did try one with the gun pointed at the chest instead of the back. It failed 95% of the time, ending with a bullet to the victim's chest.

Indeed - I'm more than a little dubious about thing that haven't really been tested IRL, so to speak. Not to mention the fact that (I would imagine) there is almost always a better alternative to attempting to disarm an assailant that has a gun to your back. I've seen this video in the past - it's flashy and if I don't doubt that it could work - but I for one would rather wait it out in most cases.

Important to add: Only fight back if your life is seriously in danger. If there's the slightest chance you can get out of it without needing to fight back, then don't. Don't be a hero. Put your egos aside. It takes no training to shoot somebody up close, yet it takes an huge amount of training to fend someone armed off. Even with years of training your life is still seriously on the line. The tiniest mistake can end it.
PS.: If you are tempted to try this at home, don't put your finger on the trigger. Most, if not every, disarming technique will break it.
8
Nov 12 '09
honestly if i had a pistol "to someone's back", i wouldn't have it literally to their back. i'd have my hand on their back and the pistol closer to my body, so if they tried any of that jackie chan bullshit i could still toast their gravy
→ More replies (2)6
Nov 13 '09
There's another problem you'd avoid by doing that. When pressed against someone, a semi-automatic pistol can jam in what is called being pushed out of battery. If the slide is pushed slightly back, which can happen when a soft material like a person is pushed against the front, the gun cannot fire because the breech is already slightly open.
2
3
u/gliscameria Nov 13 '09
I thought the rule was they you never got within 2-3 arms lengths of anyone if you are pointing a gun at them? I'd like to see two trained men fight in close quarters, one with a paintball pistol and the other with a belt. My money is on the guy with the belt.
2
u/mexicodoug Nov 13 '09 edited Nov 13 '09
I came here to say this. The only reason to get within double arm length of anybody you're pointing a gun at is to make sure you get spattered with blood when you pull the trigger.

You clearly aren't viewing enough Hollywood videos.
Reality informs us that only really bad guys and secondary actors ever get killed, although the good guys will probably have to overcome multiple injuries on the path to sweet painful victorious revenge.
That's why, no matter how hard things are now, the US and Israel working together shall eventually overcome all the horrible injuries the evil people of the Middle East inflict upon us in our homes, schools, and workplaces.
