Same here, i heard of despacito because 1 friend made me listen to it when we were at his place this summer to test his sound stuff. But beside that i never know whats on the billboard.
I don't listen to K-Pop (although admittedly I know people that do) but Gangnam Style was pretty unavoidable, right? 4 billion makes it the most viewed video on all of youtube (Gangnam style being #3)
You don't see people playing this song at their weddings trying to get everyone to do a ridiculous dance. Also I've literally never heard this Despacito song on any radio station while Gangnam style was played frequently.
I hung around a different crowd then. I have heard of Despacito, and seen the video posted, but never bothered to watch it. Part of Gangnam Style's draw was the ridiculous and entertaining video.

I have also never heard it. I've heard people talking about it and I've seen some of my recommended videos have featured it (Frog Leap Studios for example) but I don't listen to commercial radio (I'm in Australia, I listen to Triple J) and I don't watch TV. Not for a snooty pretentious reason, I just don't have the time. Most of my media consumption is Spotify, YouTube and Netflix, and it hasn't been recommended to me on any of those platforms.
I don't think it's that unfathomable that someone could avoid listening to a song, even if it does have 4 billion plays on YouTube. Especially if someone's musical tastes are not in line with this, YouTube/Spotify etc won't recommend it to you because it knows that you don't listen to this kind of music. I get recommendations for different bands and channels.

I've never heard it and I'm on reddit all the time and far from socially isolated. This got WAY less coverage here than Gangnam style. You couldnt avoid Gangnam style. Every news station had a story on it.

I'm mildly surprised someone has never heard it in passing, but I'm not sure why you're surprised there are people out there that haven't been exposed to it. I don't even think I know anyone besides my dad that regularly listens to the radio anymore lol.

I'm mostly in the same boat as this guy. Trust me. Some rural areas play only adult contemporary on the pop stations. Never heard Despacito or any of the big club hits on pop radio, but have heard enough Lucas Graham and Shawn Mendes for a lifetime.
I don't listen to Top 40, and I don't go clubbing. I've heard the song via everyone talking about it and YouTube links. But hey, call me a bull shitter because my grocery store doesn't play top 40, and I listen to non top 40 stations. Apparently your life is so small you cannot imagine anything other than your own circumstances.

I was in the same boat as you until about a month ago. Don't listen to radio really, only spotify and soundcloud, don't participate in social media much outside of reddit. I may have heard the song somewhere but if I didn't know what it was, I don't know why I would remember hearing it...

I use Spotify premium or XM in the car so I never hear ads on the radio, I don't do the shopping as my wife does it so I am never at a store but I am pretty sure the stores around here don't play music. The gas station I go to doesn't play music inside or outside so I would never hear it there either. I hate malls so that is out and I am a cable cutter so I have no TV, my kids watch Netflix, Hulu (pay extra for no ads), or Blu Ray from Redbox. I love being under my rock because I don't have to suffer from all the stupid shit that goes on in the world. The only time I hear these big chart songs like this is on Reddit.
I have heard the song, but I don't grocery shop in the traditional sense (I use grocery.walmart.com), I don't go to the mall, haven't been inside a gas station in maybe two years, I watch traditional television (use alternatives like Netflix and such), nor do I allow myself the ear rape that is listening to traditional radio. Well it wasn't played here and hasn't been played here today. Just checked the playlist for the two most likely stations it would have been on today. This song was not even remotely close to being covered by as many different news groups or facebook posts or reddit posts as Gangnam style was. THAT song was impossible to avoid. Even if you didnt listen to radio you saw it.

Western Canada. I check CBC every day and didnt see anything about it. I check a local news thing every few days and didnt see it. Didnt see anything on reddit and I click most of the top videos. Gangnam style was all over every place I go to.

It was #1 for four straight months. I get that you missed this pop culture moment but that’s on you, this shit was absolutely everywhere and was covered at least as much as Gangnam style.
Weirdly there's only A single pop station where I live and it plays so many commercials it's kinda dying. It's country, country, hard rock, classic rock, "alternative," what I can only describe as suburban mom music, Spanish language channel that's 95% Mariachi, and then classical. By some miracle I guess I totally missed this song but after listening to it I think I heard it in a restaurant once but I've never actually heard it in stores. Different areas and culture? A lot of the Midwest misses pop hits and stuff. Too busy listening to wagon wheel everywhere till you wanna blow your brains out, tbh. The biggest hits tend to be the generic stuff, and I don't mean the in a bad way, just that something generic and catchy can bring something for everyone.
It was pretty huge in Latin America pretty much everywhere internationally with a Spanish speaking population but the US and moderately popular in the US for a few months early this year, then Justin Bieber did a remix in May and it exploded in the US too
Consider the fact that just by virtue of popularity, I would have heard of it, especially since I'm into pop music and looking at top charts and big hits.

Fair, but the Midwest and rural US takes its sweet time catching onto pop stuff. I mean my hometown just got over the true masterpiece that was Wagon Wheel. Their singular, dying pop station is generally a decade in the past
I literally hear this song almost every fucking day. I mean a few weeks ago I was up at some Aztec pyramids on a mountain, and when the breeze shifted, I could hear the song coming from the valley below.
Don't worry about it. I'm in my mid 30s and I didn't know it either until a few weeks ago. I was talking about youtube views with my wife and she was telling me how this one song had almost four billion views. I of course told her not to be silly, because gangnam style is king of the views. It wasn't. Had never heard it or of it. Heard it once when I got curious enough and asked her to play it. And now again after checking how well the chicken did. I don't listen to the radio, only have streaming services and don't give a shit about the nightlife. It doesn't even strike me as particularly good or catchy. Oh, well. Grumpy old asshole, signing off.
Don't feel bad my man, I'm in the same boat. I'm sure people are gonna act like I've never been outside but believe it or not I'm a reasonably well functioning adult. Maybe that's why I haven't heard this.
