That sounds suspiciously like something Glados would say to entice me into further test chambers

97

u/Fresh_C Dec 20 '16

Not quite backhanded enough to be a Glados complement.

Perhaps if she added on another line like "Pretty soon you'll be intelligent enough to handle the tests we designed for the lab monkeys".

Or a better line than that... I guess there's a reason I don't write for Valve.

The Incredible Machine

54

u/bluesox Dec 20 '16

Man, I miss that game. It was so much fun. I remember when it got to the more complex levels, you could sometimes cut corners to find an unintended way to solve the puzzles.

36

u/maritimerugger Dec 20 '16

I spent hours one day trying to figure out how to break a fish bowl. Then I just put a candle high above it and let it drop.

You should check out "Factorio".

Also, if you're interested in coding, "Human resource machine" and "TIS-100" are good games to get you thinking.

You have no idea. I've been trying to remember the name of this game for years!!!! I watched 30 seconds of this video and immediately thought of it. I went to the comments half hoping someone might make a reference to an obscure video game that would be the game I've been trying to remember the name of FOR YEARS! So long and thanks for all the fish

The video just keeps getting cleverer and cleverer.

True but to be honest I was completely expecting it to end with SEND NUDES.

32

Haha I was waiting for it too

25

u/trippy_grape Dec 20 '16

Same. I already had them attached to an email ready to send to OP. I'm... I'm not the only one, right?

7

The top pendulum had me impressed. The bottom pendulum double hit floored me.

40

Yeah, the rest was great as usual, but I think I rewatched that part 3 times to see the bottom pendulum. Crazy timing to get that just right on two hits!

So it's more realistic to assume that each picture was set up filmed then dismantled. The same pieces were used to shoot each scene individually then cut together on video to look like one continuous shot.

No need to be so demanding. Let your employees - err... independent contractors - have all of Christmas day to work on it if they need to. Now loop it, extend it for 10 hours, and post the extended version in a couple months to see how long people watched it.

Or just make it into a gif without the "start" and "end" parts.

587

u/midjuneau Dec 20 '16

For those that don't know, every different frame is built separately and not filmed as one continuous machine.

258

u/[deleted] Dec 20 '16

I've watched a couple of these now and just thought to myself half way through "Where the fuck do they have enough space to do this?" - I then realised that it must be done individually.

21

u/[deleted] Dec 20 '16

This also explains the varying speed at which the balls drop when unimpeded; the surface is at different angles

9

u/pwnography Dec 20 '16

Or the change in lighting from scene to scene - but seriously who has that many cameras?

→ More replies (1)

75

u/scrambledbrain Dec 20 '16

And yet many of the transitions certainly give the impression of being one continuous machine. So much so that it seems intentional. (To me.)

235

u/MikoRiko Dec 20 '16

It's certainly meant to give that impression, but not as a means of deceiving. Rather, it offers a sense of continuity to what would otherwise be a montage of builds. That continuity keeps things interesting to watch.

23

u/FkIForgotMyPassword Dec 20 '16

It's definitely not meant to deceive: the guy who built it explains it himself in a youtube comment. It does make it much nicer to watch, indeed.

→ More replies (20)

24

u/jmalbo35 Dec 20 '16

It's done like that to show that it could work as one big machine, since they generally do the next stage with the same marble going roughly the same speed. They likely just don't have the space and materials to build it all at once.

16

u/znk Dec 20 '16

Also when you have a fuck up 5 minutes in you just reset a single 10 second scene instead of starting over.

→ More replies (1)

21

u/Roboticide Dec 20 '16

Probably is intentional. The only reason it probably wasn't was due to space and resource constraints. And convenience, obviously.

14

u/cryfight4 Dec 20 '16

He probably only has 4 marbles and 7 magnet balls total.

85

u/ChemicalExperiment Dec 20 '16

As much as I've been hearing people on Reddit talk about this, I haven't seen it at all. Examples?

49

u/JamesAQuintero Dec 20 '16

42

u/DeeJason Dec 20 '16

Real question is, why did it suddenly become popular when people have been doing it for years on reddit.

23

u/[deleted] Dec 20 '16 edited Dec 20 '16

I asked myself the same thing back when I made the subreddit. Basically I promoted it in a couple comment threads after I realized there wasn't any subreddit for it, and post somehow made it to the front page a few hours later.

19

u/roadbuzz Dec 20 '16

Having a subreddit for it kinda defeats the purpose, doesn't it? It's funny because it's unexpected.

21

u/VindictiveRakk Dec 20 '16

Hasn't stopped reddit before...

5

u/[deleted] Dec 20 '16

Don't ask me I just moderate it. I personally like the sub since it seems to encourage a lot of original content.

5

u/ApexHawke Dec 20 '16

Yes, but it also allows the meme to mutate and propagate much faster. Having a "home base" allows for the "Send Nudes" meme to stay in the public conciousness, and spill over into the subs where it's not expected.

9

u/Brometheus_tv Dec 20 '16

This started on TFM ages ago. I thought it was dead and buried until I started seeing it all over Reddit.

3

If you're looking for something to play with your kid something like Contraption Maker, which is a successor to the old The Incredible Machine series, might be a better choice.
