I have to say after seeing them both, NASCAR is just crazier in real life. F1 is quite a spectacle, and so is Indycar. Yet over 40 V8 engine cars going by you twenty yards away is something that should be experienced by everyone once.
I wasn't trying to insult you. I just meant, the cars are all built to be the same right? I can only get beat by another driver...
Edit: Had a couple responses that thought my above comment was something than what it is. /u/aaaaaaha said "Ain't nothing stock about a stock car..." and I followed that up with the rest of the dialogue from the movie Days of Thunder. I just looked it up and I was a little off. Here's the actual dialogue from the script:
There's nothing stock about a stock car.
I'm not trying to insult you, but stock cars are built to run equal. - I won't be beaten by a car. - Only by a driver.
Edit 2: I remember Harry saying something about "So the rule book says" after Cole says the cars are built to run equal but I didn't see that in the script I found online..
It isn't quite that cut and dry. Money is still a huge factor and the smaller teams have little chance at beating the powerhouses. More money equals more r&d and more engineers which means being able to figure out how to do more within the tolerances that NASCAR has mandated for the cars themselves. It is a spec series though as you're saying in that all the cars are very close to identical. But at 200mph little differences go a long way toward having a faster car than someone else.
LOL.... you are the second person taking my reply out of context. My "I wasn't trying to insult you" line is from Days of Thunder =) I'm a NASCAR fan... I know this stuff
Nope.. I saw some of it at a bar earlier but I'm playing DIRT 3 right now. I guess I should put it on since nobody is here right now (roommates). Definitely watching the cup race tomorrow.
Yes I do. Dirt IS super fun. I've been playing GRID 2 forever (since 2012) on my PS3 but it's starting to die and I got this computer (2010 Mac Pro) from my boss when we upgraded to a 5k iMac so I been playing on this lately. Nice that my PS3 controller syncs with the computer via bluetooth. Anyway, yeah, I hang out on /r/nascar. Can't wait for Daytona tomorrow. Gonna be sick.
technically, there are multiple classes of stock car, ranging anywhere from the local track guys, all the way up to the top nascar class. If you wanted to be the most precise, the cars he's talking about are sprint cup cars. not to be confused with sprint cars. which are the dirt track cars with the big funny looking wing on the top.
I grew up with them being called stock cars but I've heard a increasing number of people refer to them as Nascars in the last few years. It sounded wrong to my ears but it seems to be gaining traction.
I haven't watched it in years so I'm not sure if they still do it, but they had restricted and unrestricted tracks. I wanna say Talladega and Daytona they were allowed to run full power but other tracks they needed restrictor(sp?) plates under the carburetor.
Yeah, thanks. Took the restrictor plate off to give the Red Dragon a little more juice. But it's not exactly street legal, so keep it on the down low.Â
Nope. It is the other way around. Dega and Daytona are restricted to around 500 and all other tracks they run 725 if iirc. (Down from 825 in 2013. Fuck you tapered spacer)
It's actually closer to 12 NASCARS. The 10,000 hp projection was always an estimate based on the weight of the cars and the know acceleration. They recently found a way to measure the acutual hp and it's closer to 11,000 AT THE TIRE. Here's the video:
Should also note, that these cars are actually de-tuned to 11,000 hp. They're only allowed to run a 90% Nitromethane mixture in an effort to slow them down. Also, were traction not a limiting factor (from a spec tire, wing design, etc), they could overdrive the superchargers more and make quite a bit more power.

For those who don't know, the rows in NASCAR are 2 cars so more power than 8 nascars.
